INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

How many breeds do you have, Brad?
I have Birchen Marans (black ad blue), naked necks/Turkens, tolbunt polish, crested cream legbars, LF blue Cochins, bantam Cochins (assort colors), silkies (white, blue, partridge, blue partridge, splash, buff), showgirls (partridge, white and picking up blue and splash this weekend!), and modern game bantams (Birchen, blue, black, bb red, and brown red). I think that's all of them. So 9 breeds but a lot more varieties. I guys I do have hatchery white rock and brown leghorn pullets for layers in my free ranging flock as well.

Number 5 hatched!! I went in with a flash light and found the egg shell. I reached in thinking I grabbed one of the other babies and out came an almost dry little guy. I candled the sixth egg. It's fully developed, all dark except for the air cell. I can't tell if it's moving or not, if it is it's very very slight. I put it back under her to see what it will do. I'm so happy the little peeper hatched! It's the same color as the others. I believe they will all be white. Silver based whites look slightly blue as chicks, and gold based look yellow and buff. I'm good with it. My whites are my prettiest I think. They are a pain to keep clean though.
Congrats! Hope the last makes it.

My dh would kill me! So I supposes I'll just have to admire all the pics you post!

Welcome!  I am impatiently waiting on May for our first chicks.  You will love this thread.  Very knowledgeable, friendly folks!

When in May? :D My chicks are due May 19.

I am relatively sure I had something else I wanted to reply to, but I can't find it, so... Oh, well. Let's just say I had a long lab in Chemistry today.

Well, this is what I woke to today:

Four kids to entertain today meant not much time for Mom to cruise BYC! Sounds like y'all have had your hands full, too.

I did snap some pics of my "nest box shelves" while in the garage today. I couldn't help but notice that two shelves down from where I'd stowed this, I also had a leftover piece of wood from our kids' playset that I might also be able to use for the "top" of my nest boxes (so I have something to staple curtains to).

Maybe they weren't meant for this purpose, but they look like they'll be the perfect size for bantams, don't they?

That also got me thinking about other things in the garage I might repurpose for the run. We have an IKEA bunk bed that we decided we did not have the mental wherewithal to reassemble, now that we've moved. It was hard enough the first time! I might try to salvage as much of that wood as possible for the frame of the run. It won't be perfect, as I'd have to piece the boards together. I'd really rather have longer boards for the frame...but I'm also trying to be frugal. I guess I could use them for the outside of my raised beds, too, although I also had thought of using bricks for those. Feel like it has to be one or the other. Thankfully I have plenty of time to change my mind...until I lose it.

I might try that Premiere warming plate! It seems like a great idea!

So that's all the future-chicken news from here tonight! Hope all of y'all had a great day today.

I planted some trees in my front yard just in case it was real.  I just know my trees which are close to 10 yrs old will suck up all of the carbon and make great air for me.  Not really but they do get pretty red leaves in the fall.  And they like water so they are helping with our slow drainage issue in heave spring rains.  I need lots more though.  But the dry summers make it hard to plant young trees.  We lost 3 a couple years back.  I'm hoping  the roots cause the trees to pop up this year.  1 kind of almost came back last spring so maybe there is hope

When we purchased our home 15 yrs ago, I obtained 100 native trees from the DNR. Planted all of them in our small 1 acre urban lot. About 20 still live and our yard is nearly totally shaded. Great for Indiana summer cooling bills-- tough on tomato growth.
I always pick up tree seedlings from the yard and pot them. I have several oak, tulip, and some flowering trees like crabapples. If you want a few for your yard, let me know. I can bring you several 2-3' bundles of joy!
