pic 1 caption- Some old books offer interesting  methods for sexing chicks. One was that of picking the chick up by the scruff of the neck. If the chicks let its legs hang it is boy. If it draws its legs up to its breasts it is a female. This eliciting a sexual response in the chick. Below shows female response.

pic 2 caption- Another "old time" method is to place a chick on its back in your hand: females will stop kicking after a little while, males will continue to kick. 

Pic 3 caption- A final method involves hanging the chick upside down in your finger--female chicks flap and try to right themselves, males just hang. Unfortunatley none of these methods were successful i determining the sex of Don's chicks.   

Thank you Cccc, it doesn't make much sense to me either way you look at it! I tried two of the methods with my two chicks I've got... If you go by what they say- I have some cockerel hens...lol. One test says they are pullets one says cockerel the other looks too mean to try! Think I'll use the method the ancient Scots used... Wait several weeks they will either try t mount or lay an egg. Pretty foolproof Id say!

I picked up this silly magnet, from a local artist, down in Nola. Its been on my fridge for years and today I looked at it and saw it in a slightly different light. It also made me think about all this culling talk we've been having! Anyways, I think all sides will get a kick out of this.

My DH is a Pescatarian, but I am full omnivore. I don't plan on eating my chickens, but I'm not against it either. That's all I have to say about that subject...
I love how everyone here has different husbandry practices, but respects each other. Kudos, keep up all the thoughtfully written advice and remember if chickens were bigger than humans, they wouldn't hesitant to turn us into a meal.

That's really cool that you are getting Isbar chicks. I am getting Isbar chicks this spring as well. I am also getting Breda chicks at the same time. Breda fowl come in Black Blue and Splash here in the states, are bred to the Standard for the Netherlands. They were in this country at some point in time known as Guelder Fowl. They have feathered legs, vulture hocks and no combs. I don't know how to include pictures from the internet but mine are coming from Walt's Ark If you go to there website you can see what they look like. Along with these 2 breeds I am getting Coronation, Light, Silver Sussex and Swedish Flower Hens from them. Also from 2 other breeders I have Silver Penciled, Partridge Rocks, Red and Silver-Gray Dorking, Bue Orpington, RC Rhode Island Red, Sliver Laced Wyandotte, Buckeye and German New Hampshire. I am also contemplating on trying to get someone to hatch some eggs from Urch/Turnlund's for me.

Yay!! You are going to be super busy!!!! The Breda are cool with the little feathered top hats! I was glad the Bielefelder's are autosex so I will know from the start what I get there. I had to get the Isbar's straight run - so my luck I will get all cockerels! I'm praying I get at least a pair, I'd love a trio. I have already been planning my coop additions It gives me something to do until this weather breaks!

Wild bird update. The plastic was a fail. I put tarps all the way around the coop and they somehow still got in, but I am thinking there were fewer of them. I plugged a few more holes and the number went down even more. I did finally identify the jerkwads. They are starlings!!! So now the enemy has a name! Also, as the number in the coop started going down the number in the horse barn went up.....

I stopped at home depot and am now armed with more supplies. The weather is supposed to get up to a balmy 26 degrees on Saturday so I am planning the final battle for that day. If my newly reinforced run still lets them in I am going to have to look at trapping them or doing something unsavory, which I don't want to do.

Also, I am going to be looking at getting the nipple waterers (with the cups) as soon as it is warm enough. Has anyone trained older birds on those? How did you do it?

I have a day old black sex link rooster, if anyone is interested. I set some of the BR eggs on a whim. Good thing too as the BR hen is taking another break in laying for being cold. I got 3 out 5 that were fertile and 1 of those is a male. The other two are still wet but look like females.

For people who fee there chickens oatmeal, do you usually feed it cooked or uncooked? I was thinking I was going to feed it to them cooked, but I have seen it done bothe ways so I thought I would ask opinions.

every so often I will get a partial box of the instant plain kind from my mom. We don't do oatmeal so I just toss the package contents into the wet feed for the chickens. So not heated, not made with milk, but I think there is sugar in the package.
