INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have plans drawn up for professional looking breeding pens. They would be more cost effective for sure. The cuteness factor is what is attracting me to this one. I went to see it tonight and am not impressed with the other parts I checked out. It would be ok for a pen in the garage to use as a grow out pen, but not in my front unfenced in yard for a breeder pen. I was wanting something cute to put in a bend in our drive. Something that when people driving by saw it they would not think dirty chicken barn but wow what a great way to have fresh eggs. I don't need a cute pen to hide in a garage.

Ok this is going to be a little pic heavy!

Columbus RK has lots of chicks lots of variety. A few are clearly over a week old. They are selling black sex linked chicks as straight run but at $2 each. Still it would be simple enough for a person to study some pictures on google and sort out the females. Then there are 2 different bins that each have what I think are the left over chicks from prior shipments. Those are being sold as mixed straight run. Each of these bins had barred rock females in them. The one bin looked to be about 3/4 weeks old and combs were turning red for some of the chicks with tiny tails, indicating a good chance of those chicks being roosters.
But for the majority of the bins, the chicks had come in today. There was a banty straight run mixed bin, Isa Browns, Cornish Cross, multiple bins of what I call Easter Eggers but RK calls by fancier names, RIR, and a few others. There was a bin set up for straight run mixed breed ducks but no ducklings yet.

So lily's swollen eyes and sinus' are back. I am fairly certain it is the dust from being in the den. No one else ever has an issue when I deep clean the room. The last two times I have opened the window to deep clean and it got very dusty, she got this. So back to the eye drops and Tylan. I'm only going to do 3 day's this time and see how she does. I need spring time, and she needs fresh air!

Quote: Thats strange, wonder if a tray is binding? were they all even when it was turning?
I wouldn't worry about the noise, the temps and humidity is much more important. The problem with hand turning is definitely heat loss.
You will likely have a lower hatch rate from it, and its also affecting humidity each time you open. Good luck!!

I am going to try and make mine really nice looking. Paint them and have $20 invested in 5 locks lol. Have a cool design for the door. Now lets just see if they turn out that way. Mine will be towards the back of the property, can be seen from the road and I am sure looks blurry, so I regardless it will look good from road.

What are the chances of a bird who was raised in the house, never been outside more than 2 times for 5 minutes, born here, never been exposed to anyone who has birds, except for Brad, who has healthy birds, and we have never had any incidences of respiratory illness in the one year we have had chickens, having Mycoplasmosis?I also don't let visitors hold them except for very special occasions. All of the silkies I have have never been sick and are just a year old. When she was sick last time I had the rest on Duramycin. I don't want to do that again. None of the other flock members have any symptoms just like last time. The vet I talked to the last time lily was sick said it probably myco, but she is sick again. I'm really hoping it's just irritation from the dust, but the poor thing is very puffy in her face.

Ohh sure! Call me out! Lol. Maybe to out your mind to ease, look into doing the Indiana T-12 program. It's free of charge and tested for Salmonella pullorum, Salmonella gallinarum, Salmonella entritidis, Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Mycoplasma synoviae and avian influenza. Again all free of charge. I did this last summer/fall and will try to do it again this year (not sure how many times you can have it done).

Edit: Helps if I include the link! http://www.inpoultry.org/documents/T-12 Egg Testing Flyer-Web.pdf

Also, it would be great if they (Indiana Poultry Assoc) would be willing to attend the "annual" meet up!

Finally! Batch 2 has hatched. 4/4, and two are legbars and 1 is a female! Not having much luck ratio-wise with the leg bar hatches so far: 5 boys to 1 girl. Hoping my luck has turned. There are 4 legbars in batch 3 that should start to hatch tomorrow. That one also has a lot of shipped eggs. It will be interesting to see their hatch percentage. Then 4 more eggs in batch 4, including an HRIR from SallyinIN.

As far as hatching goes, I am LOVING

my Sportsman. Absolutely no issues. Holds temps perfectly, and humidity runs 45% with just water in the pan and 68-70% with two wicks added. I don't know how it could be easier. I just go to work with pipped eggs and come home to chicks! Its a good thing too, as I didn't time the final hatches very well. I will be leaving on a trip on Saturday, and our nephew will be house sitting and will have to watch over the final hatches. I'll be texting him constantly.........
