INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Too Fast ~ We were wondering when you were going to come out of hibernation! Good to hear from you!
chick rookie ~ I looked for this post the other night because I was going to answer . . . not that I know the answer! lol I have been offering chick grit for my chicks since I feed them small live mealworms and crickets and tiny sunflower kernels for treats. I'm assuming that the time to switch to offering larger grit is when they are old enough to live outside. Even though mine free range during the day and can find small pebbles for grit, I still keep a smaller hanging feeder of grit and also one with oyster shell in their coop for "free choice."
Leahs Mom ~ My sister who knits sent me that photo of the hens wearing knitted capes! ha Although they are look lovely on those hens, I bet they end up sliding around and getting caught on bushes, etc. I do think that style is more flattering than a form-fitting sweater!

they get chick grit now have since I got them, was just thinking the older ones may have been able to get the bigger grit now, they eat meal worms and diced greens. I dice it up real tiny. never thought about sunflower kernels, how about the kind we buy to eat ourselves, would those be ok?

I posted this on the NCK thread but thought I'd re-post it here too in case anyone is interested. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...eeping-thread-ots-welcome/29100#post_12965676

I've been noticing lately that many processed food items have propylene glycol in them. This includes human and animal food items, vitamins (including vitamin drops/drenches routinely used for poultry and sold on farm store shelves), etc.

This is somewhat disturbing to me as I work in an industry that uses these chemicals and they are definitely not something that you would want to ingest. In fact, propylene glycol is one of the glycol products that is used in anti-freeze (along with ethylene glycol which is very toxic), paints and other chemical products.

So...I did a little looking around and decided to post a few quotes on propylene glycol just to raise awareness on the NATURAL Chicken Keeping Thread about this item.

I encourage you to read the labels - especially on vitamin preparations, food/feed bags and other items that you may be either feeding or using around your chickens. It is one of those things that I think we should all think long and hard about before giving these items to our animals - or ourselves.

On to the quotes:
on the FDA's investigation into contaminants in chicken jerky dog treats from China, one of the findings was the presence of undeclared propylene glycol in a dozen tested samples.

The recalled VitaKitty treats were suspicious for the presence of high amounts of propylene glycol, an additive that keeps food soft and chewy. This compound is actually antifreeze. Propylene glycol is considered less toxic than ethylene glycol and is used in newer automotive antifreezes. The FDA has approved it for use in dog food, but I do not recommend feeding food containing propylene glycol to any animal.

The FDA has banned propylene glycol in or on cat food because it can cause a serious blood disease in kitties known as Heinz body anemia. This disease causes the destruction of red blood cells. Symptoms include fever, sudden weakness, loss of appetite, dark colored urine, pale mucus membranes in the mouth, and skin discoloration.

From the MSDS

It is also interesting to note that the FDA considers propylene glycol "GRAS" (Generally Regarded as Safe") to be used in food and cosmetic products. However, there is plenty of evidence that adding this chemical to your food source would not be a wise thing to do.

This is one of those things that I choose to avoid for myself and my animals.

Hello, I have been lurking around here for a few days so I wanted to introduce myself. I dont have any chickens yet...but we are getting our chicks on the 14th and I am BEYOND excited! I have been begging my husband to build me a coop for 3 years now and I finally wore him down :) We also have two wild children and a couple of cats running around. So hello, I'm sure I will be back witha question or two once we actually have a brooder full of chicks!

Welcome! I see you are int he same county as me! Where are you getting your chickens and what breeds?

I decided just to get them from Orschlen and see how it goes. I havent had chickens since I was little and I didnt really know anyone that breeds them around here anymore. We will have a whole bunch of breeds: EEs, welsummer, speckled sussex, white leghorn, RIR, Buff Orphington, Australorp, Salmon Faverolle, Barred Rock and New Hampshire. I couldnt just choose one and I didnt know what we would like the best :)

Let's Judge! ~ Here are some more poor quality photos of my beautiful LF English Orpington chicks from Kiniska. (I will take some during the day in natural light as I keep saying, but forgetting to do!) Both breeds are 7 1/2 weeks old I feel certain the the blue one (Mr. Rooster) is a boy. Any thoughts? His comb, beak, and legs/feet are larger that the Splash who obviously looks like a hen. Her tail feathers bend downwards and his are getting fluff that looks like Silkie fluff. He has little feathers starting on his neck that remind me of milkweed seed pods (not sure of the significance, but they're different than hers). Here are two of the sweet Silkie chicks from bradselig: Splash The lighter one of the two blues
Gosh, did I ever have to wade through posts to find those pictures. First, I am loving that little splash girl. Next, the blue is looking like a male to me. A video would help. Posture and movement is more telling than anything. You take pretty good pictures M2H
