Very nice! Orschelns does a great job with the chicks. I do breed and hatch chickens so if you ever want to add more of the rare or unusual breeds let me know. I breed Birchen Marans, tolbunt polish, crested legbars, bantam modern games, large fowl and bantam Cochins, silkies, showgirls, and some breeds for eating eggs like rocks, leghorns, and naked necks. I am also trying to get a flock of blue/gold partridge brahmas going and heritage barred rocks. I'd also be more than happy to hatch some chicks for you if you can't find any local from shipped eggs.I decided just to get them from Orschlen and see how it goes. I havent had chickens since I was little and I didnt really know anyone that breeds them around here anymore. We will have a whole bunch of breeds: EEs, welsummer, speckled sussex, white leghorn, RIR, Buff Orphington, Australorp, Salmon Faverolle, Barred Rock and New Hampshire. I couldnt just choose one and I didnt know what we would like the best![]()
Ohh congrats!![]()

Ohh congrats! One day I will have a small herd of goats!
Kiniska ~ Yes, you've missed quite a few posts since you've been lounging around watching TV!Gosh, did I ever have to wade through posts to find those pictures. First, I am loving that little splash girl.
Next, the blue is looking like a male to me. A video would help. Posture and movement is more telling than anything. You take pretty good pictures M2H
chick rookie ~ If you use sunflower kernels for humans, wash them first to get the salt off and then pat them dry with a paper towel. Just wash the amount that they will eat, so you don't have to worry about mold. Depending on the size of the chick, you might want to break them up into smaller pieces. I buy my sunflower kernels in bulk at a local pet store, but RK and TSC probably have them, too. I probably give them a half teaspoon (just to give you an idea of how many) each a day for treats. I know you're mainly supposed to give them chick food so they get their proper nutrients. Your idea of finely chopped greens is good! I do that for the hens in the winter when there's a lack of green things, but I hadn't thought of the chicks. They should be old enough to try a little.they get chick grit now have since I got them, was just thinking the older ones may have been able to get the bigger grit now, they eat meal worms and diced greens. I dice it up real tiny. never thought about sunflower kernels, how about the kind we buy to eat ourselves, would those be ok?

alliejean ~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread!![]()
Do you want to be listed on the BYC Indiana Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.
Click on the link (Indiana BYCers . . .) located below my signature to view the list. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send me a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. bradselig actually adds the info, so you can PM him directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. if you have any questions about this thread, please PM Jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.
AVATAR UPDATES
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

I LOVE your cat avatar!! I was a crazy cat lady before I became a crazy chicken lady. Sorry to hear about your little chick!lajohnston ~ Yes, our thread is often named the Number One something or another on BYC. (can't remember!)
jchny~ I was just kidding when mentioning brad being your sitter -- although he lives in your vicinity, he has his hands full, too. I know there are a lot of qualified chicken sitters on our thread-- and I'd say the majority are in the Indy area.Love the pics M2H! Brad would know. Same for racin, sallyIN and you too, many of our members could.
But its a lot to handle... Lots of quirky stuff. So we just manage for now. We are sure looking forward to some fishing.
I am really ready for spring.
