Waiting for spring, here in central Indiana.
Tomorrow should be the big day for our broody girl. Hopefully all the eggs were fertile & none are roos!! We decided to leave her in the barn for the hatch. Temps tomorrow are supposed to get up to 40. Then 32 for Saturday and 35 for Sunday. Hope it's warm enough since the barn doors will be open for the other animals to be able to go outside and enjoy the day...

Ugh!Well my broody showgirl was off the nest and rolled one egg under her leaving 4 eggs exposed. I took all the eggs from her and put them in the incubator. Well see if they are still viable. Silly bird!
My sis posted that pic on my FB pageI'm over 100 posts behind but wanted to post this photo. More food for thought on the aprons....

I would get yourself a goat. I don't know anyone that disliked them once they met ours!Re: Petsitter, Delawaremommy on this Indiana thread is/has been a petsitter before. I haven't spoken to her recently, but suggest interested persons PM her.
We are lucky enough to have a petsitter that is from the North side of Indianapolis, who grew up with chickens. She does a good job with all the little beings on the 'care list': fodder, seedlings, fish, frogs, wild birds, parakeets, feral cats, stray dogs, dogs, cats, and now chickens.
We had dinner with her last week and asked her how she felt about goats...I think she'd be fine with it, but she definitely rolled her eyes at us.
I might have to remove something from the vacation petsitter 'care list' if we want to add goats. Maybe the wild and stray beings could fend for themself for a week, and I could get a baby goat!![]()
LOL so true!I was thinking they look like two little ladies in their shawls heading out to town.
Wish me luck, I started two dozen eggs in the incubator this morning as my birthday presentHope I don't screw it up!![]()
awwwww!

Wow, you are going to have a barn full!
Hello, I have been lurking around here for a few days so I wanted to introduce myself. I dont have any chickens yet...but we are getting our chicks on the 14th and I am BEYOND excited! I have been begging my husband to build me a coop for 3 years now and I finally wore him downWe also have two wild children and a couple of cats running around. So hello, I'm sure I will be back witha question or two once we actually have a brooder full of chicks!
and our thread![]()

Great choices! Its a good idea to start out with a mixed flock, that way you can decide what breeds you like most.I decided just to get them from Orschlen and see how it goes. I havent had chickens since I was little and I didnt really know anyone that breeds them around here anymore. We will have a whole bunch of breeds: EEs, welsummer, speckled sussex, white leghorn, RIR, Buff Orphington, Australorp, Salmon Faverolle, Barred Rock and New Hampshire. I couldnt just choose one and I didnt know what we would like the best![]()
So sorry about the chick.Wow, this is one busy thread. I can't keep up with all the posts, nor have time to respond as much as I'd like. But I sure enjoy reading (and learning) what's shared. First, thanks to everyone who responded to my previous post. I finally got 2 RIR, 2 Barred Rock and 2 Wyandotte to start with. One is not doing well and I'm afraid he probably won't make it through the night. But I knew this might happen so I'm not freaking out. Disappointed for sure though.
I like the discussion about Chicken Sitters. I contacted my Pet Sitter before I got the chicks because we are going on vacation the first week of April and I wanted to know if she'd help. I feel confident they'll be well taken care of. I had her care for my saltwater aquarium for 2 weeks a while back. I'm happy to sit for other members and will try to figure out how to add my name the the list.
No worries, i don't think you can. It happens to all of us.Oops, sorry. I can't figure out how to delete this post!
M2H posted: pginsber ~ I bet Delawaremommy is going to have a full mailbox! What kind of goat are you looking for? Kiniska's goat just had three babies! Not sure what breed. DW is retiring since she fell at work in January and required a complete shoulder replacement. One of her "to-dos" she wants to do is to make goat cheese. We have 4 dogs; 3 of which are >10 yrs old, so the one young dog needs a pack/companion.
Goat cheese + need a pack = "OMG, I need to borrow someone's goat to get this idea out of my head"!!
Needed: tiny tiny goat that gives milk
Offer: city lot of 1 acre, vet care, a blended, loving family
See? It makes too much sense.
I need to borrow a goat to see that my dog doesn't get along with it and it won't fit into our life at all!!!
