She's not sure what is happening.

I think I might ask for the Little Giant Still Air Incubator 9200 for my birthday. Is it okay for a beginner's incubator? I don't think I will ever hatch to many but don't want others to pay a ton of money for a little one. Also, I asked how people hang their light over a dog crate brooder but I don't think anyone answered me.

LG 9200s are what I started with. Find a spot that's draft free, and you wont have to move it.
I usually clamp the lamp to a 2x4 and also wire it down to the board to keep it safe.
But I use plastic totes until they are old enough to go to the grow out coop, and have hardware cloth over them.

Well I have a new layer!

Finally got our Nubian kids dehorned and tattooed this afternoon. (Sad face)! They were champs and are no worse for ware! It is still no fun at all dehorning them. Only 4 more sets left to do this spring.

Don't envy you a bit having to go through it, I know its sure safer handling them without horns!
We will probably start doing ours soon too. My Oberhasli buck is a real task when we vaccinate or do hooves.

Grr after this hatch my little giant will either b be destroyed or modified depending on how this hatch goes. My thermostat has been turned up all the way and will only get to 100 which is not bad but it fluctuates alot not going below 96. Which im really not liking. Im on day 19 and now having trouble with humidity staying up. I have plenty of water in there. I had to take a desk lamp and aim it over the incubator. Now my temp is staying at 100 and humidity at 60. Hope it stays like this and they still hatch with no problems. I see alot of rocking which is awesome. What good is the thermostat if i still have to have light hovering over the incubator. absolutely nothing! Lol

anybody that incubates quail, can you tell me what the humidity has to be??? hoping to set my eggs but i can't get my humidity to be stable. Also, i know this has been covered before, but what's the best thermometer and humidity checker for a moved air incubator???

I do 30% incubation, and 60-70% at hatch. But I have seen some people do lower for hatch too.
Supposedly they don't need as high of humidity. Since I have bantams hatching too, I just went with 70% and they are popping out just fine!
I just had my first even perfect hatch too. 39 quail, 3 Red Pyle OEGB.

Feels like Christmas!

I just wrote this to a friend in chat and wondered if you all feel this way with your flocks....
"I feel like I have the little aliens from toy story up my butt all the time when I am in the barn. I can go into the barn and not a chicken in sight because they are busy doing whatever then I walk to the toolbox we keep feed in and turn around and they are all right there staring at me. Its unsettling. They are like ninjas"

No sleep for me tonight. I just went to look at the ducklings and chicks and Skittles, smaller duckling, was laid out in the food dish. I picked her up and she didn't put up a fight at all. She is very weak. I can feel her ribs and spine. She lays around a lot anyway, but tonight was different. I laid her on a cushion and got her some food and water to see if I could get her to eat. She stayed perfectly still the whole time. She wants to close her eyes. I got a little poly vi sol in her, and got her to take a couple of drinks. She didn't want to eat or drink. I don't know what's wrong. I'm new to ducks. I feel so bad. I hope she pulls through. I don't want to leave scrappy alone without another duck. She seemed okay today when I took pics of them.

Oh no, I am so sorry. It may be something internal you can't see.
Will do some looking and see if I can find anything at all.

Thank you. She died. It's so weird and confusing. She wasn't developing at the same rate as Scrappy. She layed under the eco glow all the time. Maybe just failure to thrive. I hope it wasn't something worse. No one else has issues. If anyone has a spare duckling let me know. Scrappy is pretty upset. they were pretty attached to one another.

Come to think of it, I did see a little blood in some poo today. I shrugged it off as intestinal lining. These chicks are very healthy and have never been in contact with anything. We are very bio secure here, so It may have just been something wrong with skittles.

If you see anymore blood, I have to read up on that so let me research it before you do.
You may need to start cocci treatments. I didn't think ducks were able to get it but honestly am not sure.
It may have been an internal failure, but if Scrappy shows any sign of bloody poo, it could be the culprit.
With her having been a weaker duckling, she may just have been more susceptible to other diseases.

I am really grateful that everyone enjoys our thread as much as I do. We have an awesome group of friends here!
And truly a huge support group too. I am still learning new things every day.
Thanks for the kind thoughts on my goats. Buddy the buckling is doing great, and getting stronger.
Shadow my doe is trying to get back up, so I think trimming her hooves paid off. They are a mess.
Front hooves are nearly cleaned up, taking slow steps with her since she has been thru so much already..
I am still taking Buddy out to see her, but I don't see her nursing this time.
She is finally letting the milk down, but I think its in best interest of both to play it safe.
I am going to just let her dry off and try to get her health in order.
Looking at different options as far as whats best for her to do so, and to keep her comfortable at the same time.
