This does not disqualify her from breeding, but having 2 cream genes instead of one is closer to the ideal.  Both my current adult breeder hens are split for cream, while my rooster is homozygous for cream (2 genes).   My plan is to replace them with any daughters that are closer to ideal.[/COLOR]

(I don't have any birds from these parents laying yet, so I'm not sure what shade of blue I will see).  I don't see anything yet on her that would disqualify her from breeding, I just have some better options to work with.  I can get some pictures if anyone is interested.[/COLOR]

I have plenty of cockerels! I just hatcjed one from my birds as well as have around 4 that are indirectly directly from greenfire. The lady buys the surprise chciks asst from greenfire and resells/swaps them.

Hi All!!!! I've sure missed everyone!!!

I have been reading posts all along but because of a totally fubar'd computer and I-phone, I couldnt respond.

Besides my internet communications being ridiculously unavailable, my life has gone through some rather stressful changes in the last couple weeks. My daughter has left a bad marraige and is now living with us ,along with my 17 yr old granddaughter .

As you can imagine that in itself has taken a lot of adjustments. Then after trying for a week to get back onthis site I ended up using an old Email addy and changing my Personna (lol) to get here. Now if thats not dedication dont know what is...lol just hope I can remember the password so all this doesnt happen again. I hope everyone recognizes the new name and realizes I'm not a newby. Well at any rate I just wanted to drop by say hi and let you all know that I'm still alive and well. BTW I really want my avatar back too...lol loved that thing and it made me feel a sense of belonging. FYI: Dont send emails because Im not sure I can get them, PM me if you have private msgs and I will chk there often.

For those of you who I have promised Hens aprons, I have made three so far. Send PMs with addy's so I can get them mailed, dont pay for them until you know for sure they fit your birds. If they dont fit return them and I'll adjust them as needed.

Once they get to be at least 6 weeks old, I'd like to see some pics of them. I'm putting together a list of what I want to look for, I might even buy a couple to grow out and pick the best.

I have the miniature legbar roo if you ever want to borrow him. I'm not quite ready to part with him yet.

Here are some pictures of my most recent hatch. I was mainly trying to get the CCLs so a few of the RIR got missed.













I think it is 4 females and 1 male for the CCL. But even with the auto gender I still have doubts till I get an egg or two.

And that's a big reason I'm doing it. Quality eggs and teachable moments. I'll do the accounting because I like accounting; I wasn't being ironic about that. But I don't expect or need to break even on a small backyard flock. To me, the extra cost will be well worth the many benefits.

My eggs that I got from kabhyper1 are going into lockdown tonight!!! I'll be off of work for them to hatch also! 18 eggs I think I'm tossing 3 of them tonight so we will see what comes of 15 awesomely awesome eggs! Thanks Kab! Hope Guss is doing ok!

Its one of the things that I love about this site. Everyone seems to have a different way and politely sharing them can make us all a little (or in my case a lot) better. I'm assuming that no two chickens are exactly alike and I don't treat my kids exactly the same either. There is so much to learn and share now that many have lost these skills from generations of grocery store shopping instead of growing food at home. I like your theories too, but that sounds like a lot of work making sure your roos aren't mounting the hens in front of you! You must be busy all day removing roos when they first start

About being Marek's carriers, can you please share the reason? Is it specifically because of the exposure after birth? From all of my reading, the virus does not pass through to the eggs and I have been hoping (maybe its misguided) that the remaining chickens I have are more tolerant as they have survived their first year well and appear to be quite healthy. I'm always interested in ideas or theories I may have missed. Breeding the bantams to LF just makes me a little nervous. It sounds like breeding my Bullmastiff to a Pomeranian.

It's really not very complicated. When I go out to feed the chickens, very rarely will the boys mount hens when I am out there. If they do, I calmly walk over and push them off. They fall off fairly easily lol. Once in awhile I dont get to them before they are done, but for the most part my boys have learned through other methods such as picking them up when we are out there just for a second even, that we are boss. Once you have established yourself the work with them gets very easy. For instance, when Gus was a few months old, he started wing dancing or courting us. So as soon as we opened the door to the run, DH or I would grab Gus as he was heading down the ramp and hold him while the other chickens all emerged from the coop. We would preen his hackle feathers and talk to him and he hated every second of it lol. We loved it.Who wouldnt want to pet their chickens?? What it did though was show him that at anytime we are larger than he is and he isn't coop boss when we are out there. And that we aren't something to be afraid of. After about a week of morning hugs

, he stopped courting us. A courting cockerel turns into a pushy aggressive rooster. If you can stop it when they are young, it is a lot less work when they are older. At any rate, most of my time when I go out to the animals is spent enjoying their presence and just watching them with the occasional hand fed treat. The roos act like hens with us. They act like roos when we arent out there. Proven by close circuit cameras we have in the coop and barn. They act like regular old cavemen when we arent there. Gentlemen when we are. Now when new people come over, we still inform them to be wary of Gus. If someone hasnt established themselves as his boss, he will test the waters. Not attacking, but he will bump into new people if he gets the chance. Also anyone with fear of roosters is not allowed near them. Roos can sense fear and it can undo a lot of hard work making them respect people. Although Blueberry my cochin can be around everyone. He thinks he is a hen all the time. Cochins are about the best roos you can have I think.

As far as the mareks goes, I just personally wouldn't want the heartbreak of a possible outbreak and have to cull my whole flock if I knew I had possible carriers. Its up to you, but I would be to afraid of accidently spreading it. Not so much the passing through the egg so much as them contracting it from a carrier later.

Awesome! Post pics and I can give you a relatively good guess on what colors you will have. Also the EE slw have been sex link hatching. They boys are a browner color the girls are more gray. Gus is fine. Just bloody gore scare from a teeny comb wound. He's back outside being himself lol.

So glad you're back! I've been dying to hear about your hatch! I'm getting ready to start a third and last round for the season. I did do more documentation this go around with the bator and it's weird! It seems that from a full bator the eggs that hatched were in placement that formed an "X". Does that make sense? I had a really hard time getting the correct moisture loss evenly but those that hatched lost appropriately.

Anyway. ..I am sorry to hear about the split. Always so hard on everyone, especially the children. I myself divorced after 10yrs of marriage back in 05 but for me it was a wonderful thing! Now my life is almost perfect. ..if only I didn't have to still see and talk to him!! Lol. My 2 oldest boys are from that marriage. Obviously I don't know the circumstances but just provide lots of support and keep reminding them it gets better! I'll have you all in my thoughts!
