Here are some "mystery chicks" I got the other day. A Lady got them from TSC for her birthday, but can't keep them. Any idea?

Love your pics! Seeing them helps me get a silkie fix so I don't go out and buy a bunch more of my own-trying to keep a small flock until we get the house sold.It was so nice today. Yesterday we put up a protection run for the silkies. Just for hawks. It's deer and garden netting. It works really well so far keeping the silkies in a enclosed area, and the netting above deterring aerial predators. The 6 week old bantams got some sun in their new coop. Just a visit though. They came in for the night.
Silkies are so odd looking, they really don't look like chickens sometimes. Very cuddly and love to see them walk around with all their feathers flying around in the wind. My white rooster stands in front of the door to the Cornish X section of the coop/run and likes to show off. The Cornish X's seem to line up and all want to get a good look. Sometimes I wonder if they think that's what they'll look like when they get bigger! LOLSilkies have to be the strangest looking creature I've ever seen.
I'm going to date myself and declare my nerdness by saying this, but they remind me of Tribbles. Or the original Muppet Show.
How do yours do as egg makers?
Congrats on 9 new chicks!I am no expert by no means. But you do want to take them out of the turner and place them in their natural position on there sides. raise up the humidity to around 60/70 and leave it be. Mine usually start to peep on the second day of lock down for some reason?? I just had 9 fuzz butts of awesomeness hatch yesterday!! Its so much fun and your daughter will enjoy it.
Love seeing your pics too! How do you and kabhyper1 keep your grass so green around the coop? Mine seemed to really pack down the dirt last year and I've planted new grass that's coming in nicely. I have a feeling when it gets nicer out and they venture outside more, they will eat most of the grass again and pack down the dirt.Well got two more pens built today. Now just need to build a couple temporary coops. I was able to make an "A" frame type cover for one pen just to get me through the night. They were all happy to be back outside and I was happy to get them out of the garage! I have two more pens to fence it and I should have enough. Then I gotta get onto actually cleaning out my garage and coops! Just not enough time in the day! I did get a couple pics snapped of the white silkies and black/blue showgirl pens that moved outside today.
I've seen this same documentary-thought the lady was a complete cuckoo and now love my white rooster so much that I guess I am turning into her too! I've always wanted to grow up and become a crazy cat lady, but now I can be a crazy honeybee, chicken and cat lady!pginsber ~ Haven't tried that . . . yet, but a lap chicken, especially a silkie, sounds nice. Next you'll have to get some diapers for it! The first time I saw a silkie was on the segment of the PBS documentary, "The Natural HIstory of the Chicken" where a woman had diapers on her silkie and swam with it in her pool. I was both fascinated and mortified when I saw that. Now years later, my kids have told me that I'm turning into that same crazy woman!
I love All Recipes but I don't understand those comments either! I always wonder why people don't just submit it as their own new recipe when they change so many ingredients/quantities! Glad I'm not the only one out there thinking this.Well, in that case!

Someone said something about not liking to cook custard. Do this instead! However, I can tell you 4 teaspoons isn't even close to enough vanilla. I'd start with four tablespoons (1/4 cup) and go from there.
While I'm rambling, does anyone else smile and shake their head at the comments and reviews on Allrecipies? It cracks me up when people say stuff like, "I loved this ice cream recipe, 5 stars! But instead of cream and sugar, I used beef, onion, garlic, peas, carrots, potatoes, parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. We served it with rolls and everyone loved it!"
This is so neat to see! Congrats! So my Easter hatch didn't happen in Easter but that's ok because most if our company ate and ran anywaysSo the kids and I got to see our first baby hatch this morning and I have a couple more working on it.![]()
Indeed, I am afraid you might be. Mwahahaaa!I had my first chicken dream last night. I was taking fuzzy little chicks out of an incubator and handing them to my wife. It was really joyful and fun!
I may be doomed.
I have two children (DD and a son who is 13) - she is the first to leave the nest. I do admit I have often daydreamed about what it will be like to have a life of my own - especially since my entire adult life has been spent as a mother - but then the reality of those little panic moments hits and I start thinking about my "baby" being gone . She is Purdue bound this fall, plans include Vet school and then off to the ARMY Vet Corps.
Love this! Purple is my fav color and this is one of the best coops I've seen so far!
A lot of people up in NWI have birds for 4-H, then sell them all. Had no clue that 3 neighbors next to my parents were growing turkeys and chickens for 4-H until we started to hear roosters crowing and made some inquiries. LOL For some reason I think people living close to others are hush, hush about raising chickens in these parts. Hope she is a good addition to your flock once she gets it through quarantine! My friend did walk around her neighborhood looking for anyone with chickens. I will quarantine her for 4 weeks. I really don't know that I have use for a rosecomb bantam, but maybe she'll be happy free-ranging with my small flock once the quarantine is over. Thanks for all the help and advice!
I hate that I didn't take a picture. ..I was cleaning out the coop yesterday and noticed one of the broody girls puffing up making noise..so I got close and still to hear peeping. . Didn't know if internal/external pip?! Then she raised up a bit and I saw a tiny foot!! Then that baby poked it's head out from mamma! First time letting a broody hatch but OMGoodness how beautiful!
These little ones are so adorable, they have such great feet!
Also it looks like the cockerels hold their tails up higher, pullets hold them lower. Stance is important for silkie sexing.Thank you!. The boys have long streamer feathers coming off of their crests. The girls don't. Pullet 2 is very tiny also. She hatched 3 days after her siblings and was in a tiny egg. If you loo closely at the picture, there are some sporadic shoots of feathers coming off of his crest. It's really hard to tell in the pics sorry.
I just candled my shipped eggs from mypetchicken. There was one that had a terrible smell!!! Opened the bator and could smell something. Had to do a sniff test up close with each egg. Yup found it!!! Gross. I had my daughter smell lol just to make for sure it was the rotten egg! Hahaha then we candled them. Out of 14 we are down to 7 moving eggs filling up the shell. 6 glow in the dark duds and the one smelly egg. 50/50 so far. The funny thing is the cracked/fixed eggs are still growing! Hope we get some cuties out of this mess of eggs!
I bought a quarter pound of red wigglers off of ebay, put them in a bin outside with holes drilled out around the bottom, similar to what Mother2Hens posted, just didn't need one as large as a garbage bin since there's just the 2 of us with 8 birds. Started them off with dirt and some scrap food/shredded junk mail. I rented this small book, Worms Eat My Garbage, from the library but used it so much I ended up getting it from Amazon. Highly recommend it, the author has great ideas for composting, including how to start and trouble shoot. Can't wait to move my bins outside soon, not that they smell, but just taking up space inside.A little off topic and hoping some of the gardeners and composter's can help me out. I just picked up a great compost tumbler. Does anyone use anything like a tumbler or compost pile/bin? And if so how do you get the material started and keep it producing good healthy compost? any tips would be great thanks all!!
Glad to hear things are getting settled-hope it is a relief.Wow! Things have moved quickly for us in less than 48 hours. Mom had her assessment for nursing home qualification Monday morning, by Tuesday morning everything -- all paperwork -- was in the hands of the nursing home and they had a room assigned to her! Yesterday afternoon we moved her there. Dad is so relieved, but there's still a lot to be done yet this next month. At least we got this accomplished!
Hello! I'm in La Porte, not too far away. Love the pic-are some ISA Browns?
I am on 5 different meds now! Feeling good enough to go to work, but still so worn out! Haven't spent much time with the chickens and really looking forward to taking care of them all over the weekend. Had crazy allergies the past few weeks and ended up with double ear infection and sinus infection. Couldn't do much at all but rest, when I tried to keep up with the thread, it was just too much for my brain! LOLI hope you are feeling better
I have some mixed eggs set to hatch on May 3rd / 4th.
Bees still are not my friend. I don't react as if they were spiders ANYMORE. But I will do my best to avoid being close to one.
I wonder if cats should be banned. They can cause birth defects and even miscarriages. Seems like maybe that could be worse than the evils of a fresh egg.
I have 2 barn cats and I can honestly say that neither the cats or the chickens have made me sick. As for smells, the duck pool does have an odor but my newest coop is almost smell free now that the weather is warmer and we are increasing the venting by removing almost all of the south wall.
