I have been stopping by the PO to talk to the clerk since last week. I had some stuff to mail so I chatted him up a couple of times about what to expect on Tues. He got confused and thought I meant *last* Tuesday, so I guess I'm not the only one anxious. Thankfully I live in a small town so it's always the same clerk at the counter, and he said he would leave a note for everyone that chicks are coming Tuesday morning. I hope to pick them up right after I drop off my daughter at preschool. I guess I am nervous because my stomach clenches just thinking about it.

Tracking stopped on mine the day they were supposed to arrive and they didn't get to the PO until the next day. The most anxiety driven day of my life trying to figure out where they were! Then I was sure I would find a box of dead chicks since they were a day late and everyone says how fragile chicks are. They were all fine and are now sassy 10 week olds! The experience really did help me learn why buying from local breeders is better, but buying sexed chicks really is so nice!!

Right! I do not want to have to deal with a batch of roosters on my first foray. I know the kids are going to get attached.

In my experience. They are delivered by 6 am at the PO and they call me as soon as they arrive. You don't want them sitting there for any longer than necessary as they've had a long trip already and need heat and water by then. So you may want to talk to them if they aren't used to getting chicks so they know and you be prepared to get them early. It's always between 530 am and 630am here.

Hello there! I am in Columbia City and new to chickens and wanted to start following this thread... We have 6 chicks, about 3 weeks old (I think?) 2 buff orpingtons, 2 black australorps and 2 RIR's... In the process of converting our shed to a coop, so I may have lots of questions... Glad to see so many people from IN!

I'm just saying if they get there at 6am then I would want to get them then. 3 hours is a long time for them that have already had a long trip. Every minute counts with those biddies and could mean losses for you.

Update on my hatch I posted about Friday. I took a pic this morning because I'm just so happy it pulled through. I honestly thought it was dead until before I gave it a burial I realized it was just barely breathing! So glad I caught it!

O yes. They call and I go around back to their delivery dock and ring the buzzer and they get them to me immediately. Takes all but 5 mins and they are in my warm vehicle on a seat heater. It really is important to get them settled as soon as possible. Knowing you live in IN and how post offices are built they aren't going to be in proper temps while they are there.

Just talk to them and they should be very willing to accommodate.

My post master is great! Calls as soon as eggs or birds arrive to pickup. She will let me come in the back where a bunch of signs hang saying "authorized personal only" and "Trespassers will be prosecuted" lol. She also has my phone number posted so if any box of eggs arrives with out my number on the box, they will still hold it for me to pick up and call me.

My advise would be to speak with the post master. In my small town if She is working and I call, she always answers the phone. She also is at the counter quite a bit. Just ask the post master if they could call you ASAP and if it's before they open how can you pick them up.
