Just one problem after another. What the heck.

I would pull her out and only integrate slowly and carefully. Even if she is docile it is the older, larger chickens whose territory she is invading that are going to be the problem. Most people utilize a "see but can't touch" approach for a few weeks before putting a new chicken in the coop with the others.

I got a birchen marans from brad when he did the last chicken train. She's incredibly docile. I think she's 12 weeks old now and she was still in with all my chicks until last night. Since I was worried about over crowding I moved them into 3 separate brooders and put her out with the big girls. But she is so docile she's been picked on pretty bad. Both of her shoulders are picked bare and bloody. I don't know what to do. Should I leave her out there to try to find her own way? Should I put her back with the chicks? What do I do?

If it is to the point that blood is drawn, then action needs to be taken. Either something like blu-kote to prevent picking or separation until she heals up. Once they can see the red blood, they don't stop.

Thanks. I will try that. I've had very good luck in introducing them at night. But I've never done it with only one bird and I think it made her a target.

I will put her back in with the babies but I won't be able to do it until tonight. Then I will figure out a way to do this. I'd really like to get my big coop done so I can put the big birds in there and use the tractor for a grow out which would eliminate this problem

They're actually not picking on her now oddly.

The babies will still pick on her if there is blood, you will need to do as Racin advises with the blu-kote or separate her from everyone until she heals. And I would do it immediately, if they are picking on her she may not make it to tonight. Just my two cents.

Absolutely DO NOT leave her out there. They will likely kill her. I'm surprised they didn't already.

You need a place where they can see each other for awhile but not get to each other. Then give her a place that she can get into where they can't and let her integrate as she feels safe. After this experience she may never feel safe.

You can divide off an area easily by using the plastic poultry netting. First make her a divided off area. Then after she and they are used to seeing each other - maybe a week or so down the road, slightly raise up the plastic netting so she can squeeze under it but they can't. Be sure she has food and water on her side so she can eat freely.


My last batch were broody raised so they were integrated into the flock by mamma. But when she war ready to "ditch" them, I made them a place they could get into safetly our of fence pieces I got from Lowes that they could go through but the adults couldn't. Looked like this. Provided them a retreat, especially during the winter when they weren't going to far and the hen house was often hostile for them.

Ok I put ointment and then blukote to hide the blood. She was so happy to be back she started making those happy chicken chirps. I think I will just put her out with the rest of the babies.

I have a silly question which will be easy to answer. I have 2 types of "buff" chickens that I don't know what type they are. I thought I had them determined but now I'm not sure.
I believe them to be Orpingtons and Red Stars but research suggests that may be wrong. Would you be kind and sneak a peak and tell me what I have?

I think you have it right, just switched around. But for some reason the video was extremely fuzzy on my computer and all legs were whitish. I think my computer was distorting the color for some reason. Anyways I am fairly certain you just switched them around, despite the fuzzy screen issue
