Yes I have high hopes for the egg production of my tetra tint and holden comets. But I have read of people on these forums who have bought 200 rosecomb bantams just to get 1 show quality.

Golden comes are very good layers but I have never had any Tera tints. I have heard if people doing that before. No way I could or would do that. Guess I am lucky to know many breeders in the breeds I am interested in and am able to pick out stock from them or hatch eggs, raise a hand full of chicks, etc

I have to say Thank you to @racinchickins
again.  My top breeding RIR rooster is now healthy.    His surgery went well and his foot is much better, not swollen at all.

I understand your frustration. I am sure I could rant quite a bit about it but I will just leave it at this. Hatcheries do a great job at mucking up breeds lol. ( no one take offense to that, I have some hatchery birds that are great in their own way)

We have a red star hatchery chicken that laid almost every day last winter once she started laying at 26 weeks (late for red stars). She is a wonderful layer so far.
On the flip side we just processed a red star layer as she had organ issues and her organs came out of her vent today. When we opened her up, she had other health issues to and the insides did not look right at all. She did not even make it to our freezer. The worst part for US was having to put her down today when tomorrow is our planned processing day.


We are 99% of the way done with a growout pen / breeding pen. But DH had to call it quits for today as we need more chick started and that sale is ending today at RK.

Since the were produced for such high egg production many develop help problem related to laying. Same with meat chickens. I guess it is great that we can get such dependent layers and quick meat produces, but at much cost to many of the animals

People like to buy the Red Stars from me as almost laying hens. So I have raised a few different batches and was basically keeping one from each batch. But I think after this last batch is done, I'll avoid them for at least a season.
I want to say that I'll stick with my own breeding and forgo the hatcheries, but their 90% pullet bargains are so hard to pass up.

With Father's Day coming up, I've started looking into getting a small round cooking surface to keep water hot for processing day. Anyone have recommendations on brands and models.
I know @racinchickins uses one that works great.

I just went to the new Rural King in Fort Wayne. It was not as nearly as impressive as I thought it would be. They have some rabbits, but no chicks. They did have quite a bit of supplies. I still prefer decaturs Rural King. I would have to say the most impressive thing there was their selection of boots. They had a ton of different designs. I need to get a pair, maybe someday.

Can anyone tell me what color/pattern this EE is? I'm assuming a lace of some sort. She is my fav hen at the moment!!
