INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Ya, we almost had a Vidia, Fawn, and Silvermist, but I had to draw a line somewhere.

We're 95% sure Gray is a she at this point.  She's lost an eye, so I'm going with a pirate name for her, I just haven't decided between
Anne Bonny - probably won't work because we already have Anna and Anne Boleyn, but I really like Bonnie Parker, or
Cheng I Sao, or
Mary (after the many Marys of  piracy - Killigrew, Read, Harvey, and Crickett.)
I'm also a big fan of Sadie the Goat.  I'm not sure it works for a chicken.

Aww I'm so sad she lost the eye. Does it need to be surgically removed? I had a kitten who got infected eyes and she needed to have them removed surgically.

Can you just change over or do the chickens have problems?

My babies figured the nipples out on their own really easily. My older chickens were a bit "slow", which is unusual since most people say chickens pick up on the nipples really quickly. Once you get a couple of them to figure out the nipples the others catch on pretty quickly. My only recommendation would be to make the switch when the weather is cooler so you don't risk dehydration in the "slower" birds. I also carried a bucket in once or twice a day for a few minutes just in case, but didn't leave it in there so they had to figure out the nipples if they were thirsty.

I pretty much "winged it" and drilled in and then enlarged the hole by wiggling the bit around.

In case anyone was curious, the technical term for that is "wallering" For example, "Hey, this bolt doesn't fit!" "Waller it out until it does; it'll fly just fine!"

I don't know about it needing to be removed or not. There's no sign of infection. There hasn't been any swelling for a while. The eye still moves around under the eyelid, but I can't get it open anymore to see how it looks. There's nothing oozing out or building up under the lid, it's just sealed up. Last time I did get it open for a saline rinse, it looked really sunken in.
She's still acting pretty much normal. She doesn't run around as much as the others, but I wouldn't either if I lost half my field of vision. She's the first up to the roost at night. She doesn't seem to be growing as fast as Elsa and the GCs - I'm a little concerned she's not getting enough time at the food bowls, but I don't know if she's just a slower growing chicken. She was the smallest at the start, too. I haven't been weighing her, so it could be that she's gaining weight fine but looks smaller just because she is. I'm trying not to over-worry, since that hasn't served me well in the past. I might try to get another picture of her tonight, or maybe even a video with her and the others, so you can see what I'm seeing.

By the way, the GCs are turning into little butterballs. :-D

Looking good! What kind of comb does the black one have? I found another one like that in the brooder. It does not have a straight comb. Also that yellow had feathered legs correct? I heard imported orps have hatched chicks with feathered shanks and they lose them with age. Both of those chicks hatched from a brown egg.
Both chicks have feathers on their legs. The black looks to have a straight comb.

:he  -- what else can you say sometimes....best of luck with the city council.  I also thought of what was suggested -- especially to get local 4-Hers involved.  Have them come and share about what they have learned & what life skills they have developed through the raising/caretaking of chickens (4-H is HUGE on developing life skills & this would be a great opportunity for some 4-Hers to see what a difference in their life & someone else's life those life skills can make!)  And welcome to the thread!!
So what breeds actually go into making an Easter egger?  A lot of my cross breed chicks from my 2 hatches have the look of an EE, but I know only 1 or 2 at the most are from the EE eggs that were in the clutch.  I really need to get some pics posted one of these days!

A breed that lays blue eggs with another breed. If you wanted to make Easter eggers I would use a white egg laying breed so you get a diluted blue color

I may have found a home for Gus and Jules, If someone on here was interested in them, please let me know asap. I would prefer someone taking them that I sort of know. They are pets so I want them to go to a good home. He is a gentle boy. He is used to ducks and livestock. I am focusing on my cochins, so I need to cut back on my flock. Jules is queen of the flock and Gus is king, so Its time to let some others step up. :) He is good with people, but will notice if you change shoes. He has checked me, but not attacked. We carry him around like a dog and he is very respectful of his owners. I also want him going to a home with experience handling large roos. Thanks :)

Beautiful birds. I would love to have them, but Tony would throw me out on my ear if I brought any more home. And as big as they are I don't think I could sneak them in like chicks.
