Btw, when you asked about funny chicken incidents, I could write a book about them-- chickens are great entertainment.

Hi thanks for the welcome, I'm so dumb I hadn't realised this thread was for people from Indiana to post on, I just thought Indiana must be a type of chicken duh! Sorry it was late in the UK!

This is a little off topic! I put into lock down tonight, 7 Wheaten Maran & 5 mixed breed eggs tonight. Started off with 15 Wheaten Marans and 6 mixed breed eggs but 8 maran's and 1 mixed was not fertile so hopefully these will hatch out ok. I have another broody Muscovy hen sitting on 8 eggs! These little post usually get past over pretty quickly, but I figured I would still post the news on here in case anyone is interested

Awesome! I'll come get the marans as soon as things calm down. It was so hot today, one of our pacas wasnt feeling well, we had dinner to go to, and are just getting around to doing chores. The maran girls I have are very picky about their laying spots. One of them hasnt laid except for the first day she was here. They are getting used to things though. I can't wait to see your chicks from them!

I want to ask a lazy question, so I'll call it a poll.

What's your favorite meat bird? And why?

I'd offer six options, but there are so many dual-purpose breeds I wouldn't know which to include or not. I know about CornishX and Dorkings, and Marans are good too, right?

What do you like to eat?

Not sure if there are many meat raisers on the IN thread...might try the Natural thread too.

I originally got my chickens "dual purpose" but by the time the layers have enough meat on them to be worth butchering it seems they'd be too tough anyway. My so-called dual purpose birds were never very meaty until way over a year.

And I've never butchered for meat so I'd be interested to hear if anyone has done any other breeds myself.

My Orpingtons are pretty good eating. They take much longer to grow out, but I think they taste better than the cornish crosses. Mine are imported stock, so they are heavier birds meant to be dual purpose.

This is my first year of raising meat birds, so since I haven't eaten any yet I'm not sure if it counts- but the pioneer/dixie rainbows are really growing nicely. I liked them because they grow similar to a ranger broiler, but they're heritage breed. Out of the girls I have for eggs, the Plymouth Rocks are a really nice heavy breed- I know those were the type my grandparents always grew for dual purpose.
