INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote: I can't take any of the oral meds right now but I can get my children in for them. My children don't have it as bad as me though. I'm going out for more witch hazel tonight. I used all of mine up before the end of April. Those first few weeks after having a baby, there are so many good uses for witch hazel.

Right now I have Betamethasone Valerate 0.1% but it is not working that great. I don't understand why it is a RX if the active stuff is so low less than 1%

Hello!! I live 20 miles southwest of Lafayette. I am new to raising chickens, I have 12 hens and 1 rooster. I absolutely love my birds, I was so excited to finally get them! Now I cant wait for them to start laying eggs. I also intend to raise some meat birds also. But a little to scared to start that just yet. I've only had my birds 2 weeks! The guy I bought them from said they were about 5 weeks away from laying!! This is all new to me, I was a city girl turned country and now I would love nothing more than to be self sustainable, going off grid would be great!
mandersn ~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread! Please see info about our great thread on page 2864.
Hahaha I looked up where the name originated and found Our Interesting Lesson for Today:

Salisbury steak is pretty much a fancy hamburger. Salisbury steak is the namesake of James Henry Salisbury (1823-1905), a doctor known for his comments on diets and nutrition during Civil War times. He recommended that people eathamburger three times a day (a friend of the Atkins diet) chased by cups of hot water, especially for soldiers who were suffering from "camp diarrhea". He was a staunch advocate of shredding all food to make it more digestible. The termSalisbury steak was first recorded in 1897 but really came into full usage during World War I when patriotic Americans wanted a substitute for the German wordhamburger. Hamburger was originally Hamburger steak (or Hamburg steak) as it was created in the city of Hamburg, Germany.
[To SallyinIndiana] Thank you for the tip about vanilla! I'll have to invest in some. Worth a try! Sorry about killer broody! Wonder why that happens!?!?!
ChickCrazed ~ Last summer when gnats and flies were really bad, I tried making vanilla spray using 1 cup water and 2 tbsp. pure vanilla extract, but it didn't do much. I recently read about hanging vanilla scented car air fresheners like these in the coop. I'm going to try that.

Below: I also ran across this sensual bug spray haha I looked up the ingredients: Refreshing formula is infused with conditioning aloe vera and calming chamomile.

During my brief searching, I found this good link: Tilly's Nest: Backyard Chickens and Flies
As I recently mentioned, I often run fans for my chickens when it's warm/hot/humid and lately also because it has rained way too much. The article says that flies don't like wind, so that's another bonus of running fans--plus they don't use much energy.
I remember last summer's discussion about the fact that infamous Black Gnats can kill chickens, so I was just refreshing my memory about them. I read that they can bite a chicken's eye, etc. and I thought of @hoosiercheetah --your chicken with the sore eye. Not sure if you know what the cause was. I don't think the evil Black Gnats have appeared here yet, but we've had a lot of the small, pesky ones. When Black Gnats were bad during a period last summer, I carefully sprayed Manna's Poutry Protector on my hens. It helped, but they didn't like being sprayed.

This is the story of an epic journey of a man and his goat who are trekking across America to raise money for an orphanage in Africa. They started at the Space Needle in Seattle and are going to Times Square in NY. They are in St. Louis by last post on Facebook. They should be coming your way.

My Ameraucanas will are over 3 months old now. All the sudden they look a lot bigger too. They aren't really babies any more even though I still call them that.

I think I will either be going to South Whitley tomorrow or Thursday.

Yesterday my face broke out in a bunch of tiny red dots. I think I had allergic reaction to something, I just can't figure out what. Anyways I hope the dots go away soon, because I look funny with a pok-a-dotted face. And I am sure it isn't chicken pox lol

The month olds are getting to big for Momma!

There is a smart chick in every bunch. She was born and got wry neck shortly after, she is doing a lot better on poly vi sol, but she couldnt drink from the bowl, so we learned the water bottle today. :)

Putting in my .02 cents lol. Love love love th idea of shirts. Idea for "logo": maybe put the
Chicken (only) from the BYC logo onto the shape of the State of Indiana with a caption something like "We chickened out at the Indiana Chickenfest 2014" ???? I would also suggest just standard T shirts. I like my shirts with room though so 3x would b comfy.
As far as meat options... It wouldn't b fair t make anyone "slave over a hot grill", I'm all for the potluck idea.
I don't remember if this was discussed, but are new shirts going to be an annual thing or just every few years making up a new one? For those of us who won't be able to join the Chickenfest party but would still like a group shirt, should it be more of a "Indiana BYCers" theme and not an event specific theme? I'd love to have an Indiana BYCers shirt as a member of this group, but I probably wouldn't get one if it were for a specific event. I've told lots of people about my chicken friends online & have encouraged others to join us. I think a shirt promoting/showing off (don't know if those are the best words or not) our group could be great discussion starters about our chickens. This is a wonderful group that I'm proud to be part of!

Still do wash the cat. If for no other reason than washing cats is funny.

You might already know this trick, but running hot hot water, as hot as you can stand it, over the rash for a few minutes will relieve the itching for an hour or two, depending on how much you can keep from touching it against anything after that.

Last time I had it really bad (approx. 75% coverage and they shot me up at the ER because I was headed into anaphylaxis) I would take scalding hot showers and then sit naked on a towel in my living room for two hours. It's not for no reason I know the names of a lot of Days of Our Lives characters. Now, the reason Days is my favorite... that's another story for another day. ;-)
