I'm sure it's frustrating, and you're trying to care for your animals. Here's a link that may help with preventative ideas to keep your stable (and coop) draining during wet weather. Solving the problem of my barn flooding. Help? - Horsetopia Forum I obviously don't know your set up, but it may help to use gutters or to dig a small trench to drain water a distance away from the structures. I shouldn't complain since your situation is much worse, but the rain has annoyed me because fungi and algae is growing everywhere. We have too much shade. Our trees are too tall, and it's not in the budget to call the professionals. I personally like a good summertime drought!
I loved your story about Princess the caretaker of the injured pullet. It's so interesting when you can see special friendships within the flock.

Wow that is a lot! I was feeling tired for ya just reading it all. Well it's hump day maybe it'll lighten up, u can always hope. I am feeling a bit anxious myself, I am going to take my daughter to my sisters over the weekend. She lives in Cincinnati and I have a house setter, but I'm worried about my chicks in the house and flock outside. I hate to leave, but my daughter has been looking forward to it. Plus I miss and want to spend time with my sister.

Thriftymom ~ We understand! We have discussed the Leaving Your Chickens Syndrome here on the thread-- how we miss our chickens and worry about their care while we're away. While you're at your sisters, you'll probably talk excessively about your chickens. That's what I do!

I got my first egg today!!! So excited. I have 10 reds and 15 black astralorps. They are almost 17 weeks old. Oh btw I'm from Medaryville, Indiana.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

BYC Indiana Google Map for detailed information
Cluck Acres (Curtis) set up a Google Map for just us INDIANA BYC’ers. You must first log on to your Google account or make a Google account. (If you have gmail, just use your gmail password). All you have to do is go to this link....http://goo.gl/maps/UShV6 . Here are the directions. You will see the state of Indiana.. Zoom in to where you live and then click on the red button that says Edit. After you click Edit you will see a hand, blue pin point and a zig zag line on the map. Click the pin point and drag it to where you live on the map. After you have placed your pin point then click on it and you can edit your description by adding your county. If you want to change your blue pin point to another icon or upload your own then up on the right of that box click the pin point icon and choose others or upload your own icon. If anyone has problems with this feel free to ask.

Dad was able to sit up in a chair and talked some. We met with the Physical Therapist and talked about some long term goals.
He is hurting, but is in a very positive mindset, improving nearly as fast as my brother did! Teasing and telling a few jokes.
I am watching my Mom more right now, the community heart hospital has an awesome team and have convinced me there is none better.
Dad is in very capable hands so I am keeping Mom close and her spirits up. She is tired and so worried.
I cannot say it enough, thank you all again for the thoughts and prayers.

I'll try to get out & take some tomorrow -- it's almost too dark now. I was wanting to post some pics of the garden too since we've got most everything in. It has taken a looooong time to get everything planted (because I have garden math -- I want at least one of every variety of every veggie!!)

Everybody could use a friend like Princess!

Man when it rains it pours. I figure after the week we have had with health issues and emergencies, I should be given my veterinary license. I got a lesson in cleaning necrotic tissue out a wound tonight.

I am also skilled in giving antibiotics orally now without aspirating the chicken, extremely tedious, I have been using a drench gun and medicating alpacas for the last 3 days, I have vaccinations to give in 2 weeks ( I do that monthly anyway though) All chickens on corid, silkie with swollen sinus' (she gets it every couple months). Wry neck chick that now has a relatively straight head and drinks from a water bottle. A duck that had a bruised foot from a hyper alpaca. And.... 2 broody silkies that wont give it up. This is just since Monday folks.

I started the week super stressed, now I'm feeling a little more confident, I will still take the hen to the vet if she isn't better tomorrow because although I feel like I just went through a week of vet school, I am aware I am not a vet.

Sorry for your loss, I don't know you as well as others but I do know enough to know that you take very good care of your birds. Sometimes things are just missed. You tried, which is more then some would do. I believe that our pets ( chickens included ) go to a happy place when they leave us, just think of her finding the biggest worms and wings stretched out sun bathing in the warm sun with not a care in the world.

I'm so glad that your Mama Bella and baby were safe! You have lots of predators to worry about. I went outside the other night at 1:00am to call my cat and realized I hadn't shut or locked the coop door! That same scenario has happened a few times a year-- I've never left it open the entire night, but I have felt extremely lucky when I have found them to be fine. I've lost a few years from my life, though, each time I realized my mistake! We have been amazed at Bonbon's chicks' flying abilities, too. They are so funny how they act like they're just like the big chickens!

yes it is very frustrating but I got off easy, others had it allot worse than I. Poor

• SallyinIndiana had chicks that didn't make it, and I know others that live in flood prone areas that are really hurting right now. So I just try and find the funny in everything that I can and move on. Thanks for the link, we have never had this problem before, I think it was just cause it came so fast the ground just couldn't soak it up fast enough, guess that's why it was called a " Flash Flood " we didn't get the rain last night we were supposed to and they have changed the forecast to no rain for a few days so maybe things can dry out a bit. the barn and the Silkie pen and house have all drained and are drying out well. I got the Silkie house up on blocks. Now we have to get a new house built for the Seabrights and all will be good in the neighborhood.

I'm so sorry! It is hard to see small injuries with all the feathers and chickens don't exactly hold still for an easy examination when you go out there! Please don't be too hard on yourself.

I think I am going to have my neighbor put Gregor down tonight. After several days in the sling he is trying to use his legs correctly, but he has lost so much weight over the last three weeks he is skin and bones and has no strength to get upright. He has had food in front of him constantly and I have been trying to bribe him with scrambled egg, pork and cabbage. He eats some but obviously not enough. You can see his keel bone through his feathers, it is awful. I will also feel guilty that there was maybe more I could have done at some point and hopefully his necropsy will bring some answers. I am trying to take some comfort in the fact that I learned from this. I wish I had figured out how to keep him in the sling from the beginning and I think he would have recovered.

We get a lot of library books at my place. My 6-year-old is into chapter books and goes through a dozen a week, and we do the summer reading program every year.


So, the girl wanted to read some books about chickens, which I thought was awesome. We found a few good ones in juvi non-fiction. The other day my wife was reading one with her, and from the other room I heard the girl saying, "Eww, that chicken is ugly!" and a minute later "ooOOOOooohh, those chickens are beautifull!!" That sent a flag up, but just a small one.


So last night I read her bedtime stories, and she pulls out this chicken book, and we're reading through it. In the middle there are pictures of different breeds, and there are a few Naked Necks, and she again commented on their hideousness. I love that she uses words like 'hideous'. And no offense to the NN enthusiasts, but I didn't disagree with my daughter.


Then we turn the page, and there are half a dozen big glossy pictures of Silkies. The girl went into a paroxysm of joy and almost bounced off the couch. "Daddy, those chickens are so beautiful! They look so soft and fuzzy, can we have some? Can we can we can we please please PLEEEEEEEEASE????"

Yeeah. I explained that we didn't have room for any more right now, but some day we would, and we'd see about it then.


Silkie breeders, you're on alert. You've got 3-5 years. Get ready.
