INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

To everyone who has sick birds or who has lost or is loosing birds - I don't often comment on such things, not because I don't notice or care, but because I usually don't know what to say and I'm not very good with platitudes. But please know that I hear you, I understand your hurt, and I always pray for you and your family and your chickens. For whatever it's worth, just know that there's one more soul out here, kindred to yours, and with you all the way.

God Bless.

Looking for suggestions, ideas, pictures, designs, drawings, etc. for the Official Indiana T-shirt. We would like to get as many submitted as possible. Please PM lilmizscareall with any ideas, suggestions, etc. Also any input on style, size, etc. would also be appreciated.

We are also still looking for input on the 2 options listed on the flyer for the pot luck/and or bbq, as well as volunteers for demos on FF, candling, or anything any one would like to demo, talk about or do.

@Mother2Hens & @jchny2000 Hope you guys like this! Still working on some tweaks but this is what I have so far. I am catching up on posts, so not sure if anyone else has submitted ideas yet. I can change the wording to say 2nd annual or whatever you'd like. :)

I'm considering taking the chicks away from my newest brooder in the next two - three weeks. Any suggestions for how to do it? I really want my Rosie (the broody) to start laying again. I originally thought that the other broody hens might just become community moms and have a daycare. Then sneaking Rosie out would have been a might bit easier. I also need to know if there is anyway I can get Rosie to stop mothering the chicks to start laying eggs. So far Rosie has not left the nest. She sticks her rear out to poo and I've been giving her food and water in the nest. But she won't take her chicks to the tractor part of the tractor where the other chicks and broody mother hens are.

or the whole picture in the shape of Indiana. This coming from a person who won't even take the time to submit a design. yours is way better than mine just as it is. Although I'm sure more than a few suggestions will be made. Too many cooks and all... Still having it in the shape of Indiana seems cool to me as does having a symmetrical circle top.

Just for fun. Probably too girly for our male BYCers, and I'm sure M2H could do a better job with the execution, but here's my idea of an Indiana chicken shirt.

:)

(I'm watermarking it just to keep pirates from doing their own merch with it...learned that the hard way...but if anyone does want to use it for personal use or for the BYC shirt I'd happily remove the watermark.)

CCCHICKENS~ I am sorry to hear that! Animals grieve, including chickens. When Violet, my Lavender Orp had to be put to sleep after months of trying to heal her leg injury, Adeline, my Jubilee Orp who was her constant companion was very distressed. She called and looked for Violet for almost a week. When my Flock Leader BJG Jersey had to be put to sleep because of ovarian cancer, the other hens seemed worried and stressed. I think it was not only because Jersey was their leader, but I felt they knew that something was wrong with her and they missed her. Some people will say that I'm anthropomorphizing, but after seeing Adeline's reaction, I did some searching in scholarly databases re animal behavior. I thought I had saved some of the info, but can't find it now. I did find this excerpt of a book that was critically acclaimed when it was published last year. When I read the swimming pool story below, it reminded me of a few weeks ago when I got home and heard my chickens making an unusual sounding racket. I went to see what was going on and several of them were lined up in a row looking straight at the coop dust bath area where I found my Blue Silkie, Bixley, dead. After I examined her, I laid her down on the patio by the chickens so they could see and hopefully understand that she had passed.

I love the excerpt you shared. I feel like humans have a way of always thinking they are better/smarter/righteous over animals. I truly think the more scientists can study animals and really understand them, them more we'll find we are just like them.
Speaking of chicken math - What would you consider to be the minimum number of chicks to raise together and add to an established flock? I'm just thinking ahead to the inevitable.

My half-baked notion is to brood the chicks in a cage inside the coop, so the flock gets to know them as they grow, then let them loose at some point. Is there a reason that's totally insane and won't work?

I've also considered waiting until my current birds stop laying effectively, harvesting the whole flock, and starting over with a new batch.

I have years probably before any of this needs to happen.
I have my chicks in a coop connected to our run right now. There is one layer of hardware cloth between them so they can see, smell and touch each other. When these chicks are large enough to go into the main coop/run, then I will have a new batch of babies to go into the second coop. I think it's a really good system so you don't have to keep chicks in the house as long.

Hello!! I live 20 miles southwest of Lafayette. I am new to raising chickens, I have 12 hens and 1 rooster. I absolutely love my birds, I was so excited to finally get them! Now I cant wait for them to start laying eggs. I also intend to raise some meat birds also. But a little to scared to start that just yet. I've only had my birds 2 weeks! The guy I bought them from said they were about 5 weeks away from laying!! This is all new to me, I was a city girl turned country and now I would love nothing more than to be self sustainable, going off grid would be great!
Glad to hear from another city girl turned country who wants to be self sustainable. :)

Putting in my .02 cents lol. Love love love th idea of shirts. Idea for "logo": maybe put the
Chicken (only) from the BYC logo onto the shape of the State of Indiana with a caption something like "We chickened out at the Indiana Chickenfest 2014" ???? I would also suggest just standard T shirts. I like my shirts with room though so 3x would b comfy.
As far as meat options... It wouldn't b fair t make anyone "slave over a hot grill", I'm all for the potluck idea.

Love the caption idea!!

By the way, if nobody really knows if BYC cares about the logo use, I'd be happy to volunteer to find out

If you wouldn't mind finding out, I would love to get ahold of an eps copy of the logo (300+ dpi). I re-created the logo for the shirt design I submitted

This is the story of an epic journey of a man and his goat who are trekking across America to raise money for an orphanage in Africa. They started at the Space Needle in Seattle and are going to Times Square in NY. They are in St. Louis by last post on Facebook. They should be coming your way.

This is so cool! Thank you for sharing! I think this is his page on FB: https://www.facebook.com/thewritinglife.
I don't remember if this was discussed, but are new shirts going to be an annual thing or just every few years making up a new one? For those of us who won't be able to join the Chickenfest party but would still like a group shirt, should it be more of a "Indiana BYCers" theme and not an event specific theme? I'd love to have an Indiana BYCers shirt as a member of this group, but I probably wouldn't get one if it were for a specific event. I've told lots of people about my chicken friends online & have encouraged others to join us. I think a shirt promoting/showing off (don't know if those are the best words or not) our group could be great discussion starters about our chickens. This is a wonderful group that I'm proud to be part of!
I think you've got a good point here. I tell my friends/family about conversations in this thread and would love to have a shirt I could show people and talk about BYC.

HI GUYS~~!!!
I have fantastic news. Dad not only did well with the valve replacement, open heart surgery and new bypass today, he is already off the ventilator

Pretty good for an 80 year old man! I cannot say this enough, I am truly grateful for all the thoughts and prayers throughout this ordeal.
A week ago I thought I was going to lose my father. We aren't out of the woods yet, but wow. We are very hopeful for him now.
Thank you all

ChickCrazed/leslea~ By BR hen, Tweedy, isn't like the stereotype that ChickCrazed described. (just teasing you, CC!) Tweedy has always reminded me of a serious, level-headed rule-follower type. She hates my EE, Roadrunner, who used to be skittish, but has turned into a drama queen. Tweedy has no patience for complainers. She is fine with all the chickens and chicks as long as someone doesn't start something. Today, Tweedy was in the adjunct nesting box in the garage. Four other hens wanted in that same box and the same time. Tweedy hunkered down. Later in the day I found five eggs in that box even though there are other nesting boxes. Hard Headed Hens!

I wish I head a bird like Tweedy-she sounds awesome! Having a moderator other than the rooster would be great.

Email is [email protected]

Please can others send me emails? Please! !
I will work on this today and try to get something posted here as another example for others. Didn't realize we could send letters in place of going (if I lived closer, I would so be there!)

I actually would like one of each! Lol I normally only wear Tshirts, with my jeans that is. Am proud of my chickens and my affiliation with this group... so gimme conversation starters! Lol I had a dream last night that I bought a shirt that said: " why did the chicken cross the road???? Duh to come to the Indiana BYCers Chickenfest of course!"
Love this caption idea too!

yesterdays flooding and more on the way tonight and up till Tuesday I'm told. the silkies and the Seabrights were brought inside yesterday and the seabrights house was the victim of a play set, so they will be in the house for awhile till they get a new house
hit.gif

Am putting the Silkie house up on 2 concrete blocks till the weekend and we can make legs for it ( I wanted done in the first place ) I just hope they will climb a ramp that high. they have a little one right now. Never had a flooding problem here before don't know what the deal is. worried about the 6 days of it coming in tonight, even my horses were standing in the barn in water up to their ankles. The goats are having hissy fits!!!!!! they hate water. and I brought the babies in cause they couldn't find a place to get up out of the water in the barn and it was almost touching their little bellies. ( the adults had all the high places ) am making more high places today just in case we have the same problem again, 2 -3 mth old goats are not house friendly.

Hope no one else is having the same problems, I don't wish this on people I don't like let alone the ones I do.
I am sorry to hear this. Flooding is no fun and the government and insurance often don't help. Keeping you in my thoughts.
She didnt make it. I feel so guilty not seeing her wound in time. I'll never get used to seeing them go. She was one of my first chicks. This is a rough one.
I am sorry to hear this. It sounds like you did everything you could, I know that doesn't always make it any easier.

We get a lot of library books at my place. My 6-year-old is into chapter books and goes through a dozen a week, and we do the summer reading program every year.

So, the girl wanted to read some books about chickens, which I thought was awesome. We found a few good ones in juvi non-fiction. The other day my wife was reading one with her, and from the other room I heard the girl saying, "Eww, that chicken is ugly!" and a minute later "ooOOOOooohh, those chickens are beautifull!!" That sent a flag up, but just a small one.

So last night I read her bedtime stories, and she pulls out this chicken book, and we're reading through it. In the middle there are pictures of different breeds, and there are a few Naked Necks, and she again commented on their hideousness. I love that she uses words like 'hideous'. And no offense to the NN enthusiasts, but I didn't disagree with my daughter.

Then we turn the page, and there are half a dozen big glossy pictures of Silkies. The girl went into a paroxysm of joy and almost bounced off the couch. "Daddy, those chickens are so beautiful! They look so soft and fuzzy, can we have some? Can we can we can we please please PLEEEEEEEEASE????"

Yeeah. I explained that we didn't have room for any more right now, but some day we would, and we'd see about it then.

Silkie breeders, you're on alert. You've got 3-5 years. Get ready.
Whenever we have kids over, they just love the silkies! They really do make great pets for kids and can help to teach them responsibility too.

Maybe make the other side round around the buff chicken?
After I posted that, I noticed I needed to fix that. Also made some minor color changes.

I really like this suggestion. I will try to play around with the image to see if I can work the state into the design. Problem with Indiana is it is much longer than it is wide-so I am not sure that I can fit three chickens across the state without having a lot of leftover space vertically. If anyone has suggestions for working the state into the design, please chime in! Also, if you want the original file to play around with I can email you the Adobe Illustrator file.

Probably too girly for our male BYCers,

Yep. On behalf of all of the men here at BYC Indy, none of whom asked me to speak on their behalf, I offer this suggestion:

You could put like, words and stuff on it.

ETA: Don't be a smart alec, chickcrazed, I have guns. And so do my chickens. ;-)
