INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Nope! It isn't a crossbeak, the two line up perfectly, they are just both a bit crooked on its face. It seems to eat just fine, I would assume it is used to aiming a bit off center for food lol. It is drinking out of my nipple waterers and everything! I just feel bad that it sleeps by itself on the floor. The whole reason I took the white one too was so it would have a buddy to pile with.

I am interested to hear what happens with your long beak Kab, since the cross beak silkie does have a REALLY long, curved upper beak and I have considered trimming it. Not sure if I should. I'll try to get some pictures tonight.
I didn't know there was such a thing, I thought crooked was the same as cross beak. Very interesting to learn this!

For those of you in or around the Carmel area, I have drafted a letter to the city council members in hopes of raising the current limit to six hens. If any of you are interested in doing so, I would appreciate your help in lobbying for this cause. I think the best way to accomplish this is by many of us writing similar letters to various council members. This link contains their contact/ e-mail information.

I live in Carmel with a small flock of 8 chickens who are not overly noisy and we keep up with them so the smell is negligible but a neighbor complained and the city sent someone out. I think the main complaint was about a new shed we put in to use as a coop, but of course that brought up the issue of numbers in my flock. The ironic part is that the inspector said that for my property's size, I am allowed to have five sheds... Go figure... Then of course the complaint included the honey bees which are completely legal. @%$hole neighbor just being anti-social in general. The city is demanding that I get rid of 5 hens in the next 2 weeks. A different neighbor has offered that we can put our portable coop on his property, but that still leaves 2 that I have to get rid of

Any help you guys can offer is much appreciated. I see my chickens as pets more than just egg producers and have raised them from chicks, so picking is nearly impossible.

Thanks so much

I sent a letter for you. I hope you win!

Thank you to everyone for entertaining my hissy fit. I'm sorry. Nobody deserved that. I'm so stressed and depressed. Thanks again to the people who have come to the meeting (s), and who have been supporting me. Hugs to you all.

Or you can send me a pm or if you want to come to the meeting it's on Monday at the government building at 59th and post. I need to find out a definite time but I think it's 5 or 6 pm.

Sorry again guys.

Was it ever determined when exactly this meeting is? I'm planning to attend.

Tonight at 6.

The ordinance isn't going to pass. I was already told. There's the meeting tonight and tge vote is Wednesday.

They suggested I try to get a variance instead. Sigh.

If they already know it won't pass, then there is probably no reason to attend. Did they say why it won't pass?

Can you reach out to your doctor and get a note saying your chickens are therapy chickens for your depression? Also, can you borrow a silkie to carry into the meeting?

It might help your cause.

Um. It's not 100% but they wrote the ordinance in a way that it's very broad. Too broad for some councilors. However, the current council president wants chickens and has a small property. So putting limitations on it will upset the other councilors. I really don't know what to do but I'm going to try. I want to get myself on record.

It sounds like they will eventually work it out and allow chickens (although I'm sure not in the numbers we would all prefer). My advice is that you work on keeping your variance/exemption to keep your birds until they do get it sorted. I would definitely try to cultivate the friendship of the council president that wants to keep chickens. Maybe even refer her it the Indiana BYC thread.

Patrick I hope you come even if we can't get this specific ordinance passed I think you are very pragmatic and you speak well and are very intelligent. I think having you there to help would be huge.
