INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

On a less crappy note, here are my 7 week olds. Their new brooder in the coop, and a few of Casper and Sheldon. :)

Great looking birds!
What is the color pattern on them? At first glance, I would guess Blue, but I notice some Red, too. What color parenting mix leads to this coloration? What colors would you anticipate this coloration would produce in offspring?

They are partridge. Blue or black dad. Partridge, blue, black or white moms. I don't have them separated by color yet. These chicks were all hatched chipmunk patterned. This is them at hatch.

Quote: They look like Axoa's but on the ground instead of attached to a wall. We were feeding wet but have switched back to dry. Wet had its seasons around here but flies and extreme cold cause us to convert back to dry. I think I might just stick with dry. wet really attracts the flies and it is heavier. We fill water containers at night and top off the heavily used 2 or 3 in the morning. But the food gets put out in the morning for the penned chickens and in the evening for the free rangers. I'm the one that carries the food so lighter is better. And while I did see a decrease in the food consumption when I was using wet it was not consistent across all pens or breeds. It was more of an age or free ranging thing. I'm just one owner so many more have a great success story for fermented food. But not me.

OMG-stinkin' cute!
How much Red does a Blue have to have to be considered Blue Partridge? Apologies for my over-simplifying question.
We have a 'Blue' Sizzle and as it's growing up, I see 4 or 5 teeny tiny patches of Red on the back of her neck and head.
This whole Silkie experience has been new to me, and I've learned a lot in the few months I've been a Silkie mom. Thanks for your guidance.

This chick is a normal blue, not partridge. I'm still learning about partridge, but a blue patridge has blue down, a red partridge has slate or black down, silver partridge doesn't have red, etc. I may be wrong on some of that, but I learn from reading other peoples posts lol. If your chick wasn't born with the chipmumk pattern, she probably isn't partridge. I would say she has gold leakage. I have a black silkie hen with a bit of gold leakage on her hackles. Probably the most thorough answer you would get would be on the partridge silkie thread. They are really knowledgeable over there.

My Henley is a blue partridge I think because her down is blue, but she looks like a regular red partridge to me sometimes also.

some of our homemade pallet wood trough feeders. These have worked the best until they break. But they are quite cheap to make we just have to pay for the screws. They are at most 2.5 ft long.

our most recent gutter feeder in the making this is the style that the mouse was hidden under with her nest.

Didn't notice the nasty weather here, I think it all went to the east of us. Processed 6 Cornish X and a roo today! Haven't tasted them obviously but the Cornish seemed much easier to clean out than the multipurpose Roos we did last year!

So those are just the wood pieces removed from the pallet with 2 cut for end pieces and screwed together?

Do you feed inside so that they don't get rained on?

PS: Those chickens have a very nice rug. I'd like on just like it.

PS: This is a window box w/pyrex pans in it for wet feed.

Thinking of trying some dry in one of these boxes without the pyrex but I think it's too wide and they might be able to stand in it and scratch feed out :( It works perfect w/ the pyrex as those narrow it down enough that they aren't able to stand in it and it also keeps them from tipping if they try to stand on the edge.

Some photos of the kiddos. Swedish Flower Hens. They'll be 7 wks in 2 days.

Looks like I got all pullets again!!! (That's twice now...last hatch was 100%...3 pullets. This looks like another 3 :D )
But...
I don't declare them pullets for sure until I see an egg.
