INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello! I am new to this forum. I might be the only "chicken-less" person here. I live in Indianapolis, and have been contemplating on getting chickens. I have a few questions first, and one nosey-know it all neighbor that has scared the bigeebeez out of me. First, the neighbor. I mentioned awhile ago that I was thinking about getting a few chickens. She looked at me so disgustingly as if I had taken a poo right there in front of her. She proclaimed it was illegal and that she would have them removed, because well, she has nothing more to do with her time now that most kardashian episodes are now reruns. So, is it still legal? I'm in Pike township. I won't eat them, I only want their eggs and I think the overall idea is neat. I don't want them to be loud and don't want high costs. We own dogs, and I wonder how many animals you can have per one residency. There is no HOA. Just crazy lady. Should I even get any if I have to worry about her? Or let her get her panties in a wedge and deal with it? What breed would you recommend for me? Age of chickens? How many?

You are not the only one on the thread with no chickens. Many members and lurkers actively read posts and ask questions in preparation for getting chickens.

The most important issue is finding out if it's legal for you to have chickens, especially since you already have a neighbor who has made up her mind against chickens based on ignorance. Cities, counties, and townships all have different ordinances and many aren't logical. Some ordinances count total pets-- in the Evansville city limits for example, you can have 6 pets (no roosters)-- 4 chickens and 2 dogs that must be registered. Luckily, I live just outside the city limits and I can have as many chickens as I'd like-- and roos. (However, I have a small flock since I live in a subdivision).

The next important issue is to Read & Research first! You are smart seek our thread for help. There is SO much to learn about chickens. My personal advice is to start with 4-6 chicks, each a different breed (more interesting that way), but it's easier if they're the same size -- either LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam size. Research different breeds-- there are tons-- but some have better availability than others. Besides having your brooder ready, have your coop ready because they grow quickly. You can actually see changes each day.

Our members are helpful, but you can also find specific information by going to Search This Thread at the bottom or at the top of this page. The main BYC site has numerous categories of information as well. Keep us posted! We are glad you joined us.
Here is information for new members and anyone else interested:

To participate on the Indiana Thread, we ask that you follow byc.com’s rules for family-friendly posts. We have members of all ages. Our thread is known for being very active because our members are supportive, respectful of each other’s opinions, interesting, and fun! The Indiana Thread is a diverse group of fantastic members who range from newbies to experienced chicken owners, those who raise chickens for healthful food, and others who enjoy chickens as pets. And we love photos! Posts are not limited to the topic of chickens. There is no such thing as a “dumb” question! Whatever your questions may be, we likely have members who can help you.

Do you want to be listed on the Indiana BYC Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on this link: INDIANA BYC Members' List Look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options. (This link is also located below my signature on my posts and several other members' posts).

If you’d like to be added, send a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” bradselig and CRSelvey (Cheryl) actually add the info, so you can PM either one of them directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. If you have any questions about this thread, please PM jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

Avatar Updates
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

Volunteers Needed
We're always in need of helpful members to compile or update information or to work on special events. Volunteer as little or as much as your schedule allows. It's nothing formal; just pitch in when you can. We also welcome ideas that you'd like to pursue. Just PM jchny2000, Mother2Hens, bradselig, or CRSelvey for more information. Thank you.

What do the shirts look like? How much are they?
Hi cklewis ~ The Indiana Backyard Chicken Official Tshirt ($11) looks like this:

The Tshirt was discussed on this thread and on the Indiana Chickenfest thread -- we've gone through voting and pre-ordering, and will receive the shipment this week. So . . . it's too late to get one this time around, but if the demand is there, we will take new orders. I am also planning to post other Tshirt designs that people can use and order themselves. I had planned to post those already, but have been so busy with work and Chickenfest planning that I am going to wait a week or two.
If anyone has ideas for posting announcements, we need your input.
The frustrating thing about making announcements is that they get lost in the thread. Even a specific thread is created like the Chickenfest thread, members may miss the announcement that there's a new thread! Everyone can't be online all the time.

barb s took the time to PM the Chickenfest announcement to every person on the member list. We have too many members to send a membership PM.

I guess the best way to know what is going on is to keep up with the thread although I know it can be difficult at times-- everyone has busy lives. I have surprised myself by being behind-- off and on the past two months. I'll catch up since I don't want to miss anything, but something happens, and I am behind again.

Welcome! [to @newchickintown1
Pike Township

Indianapolis does not have a restriction on Chickens. The only issue would be a noise violation between 10 or 11 PM and 7 AM - and a rooster would be the main issue there but you don't have to have a rooster to have eggs! Since you don't have an HOA then you should be fine but I do not know for sure if Pike has any specific regulations and could not find anything online. We have the same type of neighbor, known to complain about everything in the neighborhood and guess what? She works for the Mayors action line!! We just decided we wanted chickens and better to ask for forgiveness with a dozen fresh eggs than ask permission and make her think we needed her permission. We were going to get chickens regardless of how she felt. I realize it sounds liek we are being terrible neighbors but there is a long sorted history I won't bore you with. We are lucky that she is really excited about our chickens, no idea if that will last but for now we are good.

Your question reminded me there is a meeting about proposed re-zoning in Indy tomorrow.
flyladyrocks and newchickintown ~ I'm no expert on Indy ordinances, but I have heard that various areas of Indy have different ordinances. The info that flyladyrocks posted may or may not pertain to Pike Township. Hopefully it does!

The Egg Song can be noisy at times, but it's nothing compared to neglectful dog owners who led their dogs bark incessantly or the noise from leaf blowers, weed eaters, mowers, etc. Parents who let their kids constantly scream or who constantly scream at their kids are even worse. And what's with all the target shooting in neighborhoods? I used to never hear a gunshot, and now I hear target shooting!

I agree that it's good PR to give your next door neighbors fresh eggs now and then (don't offer eggs regularly or they will expect them).

I can't help on the ordinances but I always welcome visitors if you want to come see my setup and see how loud (and cute) the hooligans are. I am about 25 minutes north of you (I use to work in Pike township). That offer is always open to anyone (especially noobies!). I have all sorts of sage wisdom from my foray into chickens!

In other news, I had "helpers" yesterday while I was watering my new bushes along the house. How cute are they?!?!?!

Anyone in Indy going to either of the Zoning meeting tomorrow? I need to go to the one at Noon cause I don't have someone to watch my daughter tomorrow evening. I just suddenly remembered this, I knew I was forgetting something tomorrow! (thanks newchickenintown1 for sparking my memory!)

Here is the info again in case anyone else forgot:

We are going tonight to the 5:30 session.
We don't have a speech prepared or anything, but we want to be involved in this, as it affects us so much.
If you learn anything from the noon session that you want to share, please do!

We are 6 miles outside of downtown Indy, near Lafayette Scare mall (inside joke for the West siders that don't go near the mall after dark).
We have 8 hens and 2 chicks, and we get about 5 eggs a day. Our hens don't free range, but they have a decent sized area to range in. This is half of their L-shaped run. This part is 10'x30'.

We have a larger city-sized lot, with neighbors on 3 sides of us. Our neighbors in the back have teenage kids and they frequently pop their heads over the fence to see what's going on in our garden and our chicken run. I'm not concerned (or embarassed) by the noise, although like others have said, the egg song does get a little loud. I've typically not been concerned by the smell of the chicken coop or the chicken run, but when it rains, it can get a little smelly.
Hope this info helps you.

Pictures of some of our girls. They were very excited to get watermelon rinds last night. Okay-I admit it-we bribed them with watermelon to get them to stand still for pictures.

This is Celine, a Dominique.

This is Ms. Jackson, a Cream Legbar.

This is Diana, a hatchery quality Golden Cuckoo Marans.

Finally, this is a terrible picture of Cher, our Blue Partridge Sizzle chick. She's like spit on a hot iron--she RUNS everywhere. Very difficult to get her picture.
