INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote: Wow great post, lots of good info!
My eggs never stay in the freezer long, maybe thats why? Have none froze yet this year. All my extras are going to the hog, and he is pretty HUGE! Looking for yorkshire piglets BTW if anyone raises them.

Anybody going to Wolfs that has a Indiana BYC shirt should wear them. That would be cool!

Hope we can make it but not looking like it.

You "guys" are more brave than I am going to the swap meets! (Not real excited about the possibility of bringing home diseases...)

My dad's doctor was talking to me this week about the meet. Told me he got some there but he was never going to do it again.
Ugh, thats too bad.
I do worry about the disease issues too. If I did get critters from a swap, they would be quarantined at least 45 days before going near my flock.

I've bought chickens from auctions for years down in Southern Indiana. Went to Dinkys Auction almost every week when I could. Never had a problem.

Hear a lot of good comments about Dinky's. Hope to make it to one.
Guess I am not the only one with fly issues this year! The chicks were little last year at this time, they weren't outside until fall so I thought the mass amount of flies was normal. We've put out fly paper and fly traps that just use sugar water to attract the flies and trap them into a glass jar-can't really use pesticides b/c of the honeybees and our yard is all organic. Those glass jars were filled within 3 weeks. So gross!
I did not use any pesticide or chemical on our garden in hopes the bees fair well, we are surrounded by farm fields tho. Rarely see honeybees, and am still really thinking about keeping them.

I've got a few different pullets starting to lay in the last week! And surprise one of my EE pullets layed an awesome light blue egg (in the box) today! Have no clue of witch one it was but none the less a BLUE egg!!!!

The left green one is from a EE cross bantam, the white one is a leghorn pullet!!
Congrats! My first white egg yesterday from one of my Leghorns too. Her comb and waddles are so red, was sure she was a roo until I looked at her close.

Quote: Good post! (out of ovations again lol)

Quote: I have seen one that slides into a wall, pretty cool. It was at one of the historical homes here in indiana.

Quote: UGH yes.. DH rarely seems to get bit.

I've been asked for them, so here you guys go. These are some of my non-chicken pets:

Lilly. She's a red kangaroo that's coming up on 2 years old.

Oliver the kinkajou.

Jack and Jill. They're zedonks (zonkeys, zedonkeys, etc)

Zeus and Zoey. They're patagonian cavies aka patagonian maras.

I also have camels, micro pigs, horses, llamas, and some other things, but I don't want to take up too much space, lol.

If anybody is ever in my area and you'd like to stop by for a meet and greet just let me know. All the animals LOVE visitors. Kids like to pet and feed them all.
Wow -- so do you have your own personal zoo or what?

Want to seeeeeee!

Quote: Oh no, I am sooo sorry. That's why I posted Dave's rules so early on, he is a real stickler about dog rules at camp.
He doesn't like my lil pug mix, she barks too much and will jump into everyone's lap unwelcomed. Sadie usually does not go anymore.
If we plan to be on the lake all weekend she goes, she even has her own life jacket to be on the boat.

we were so busy trying to get the goats in their not done yet shed and lock them in there, we lost light before we got pictures. I'll try to get some tomorrow.

I now really really understand the people who order chicks and wait to start their coops.
Congrats! Cant wait to see them

Oh goodness, I have to come see you someday. Cavies alone, and the adorable Lilly

Quote: I'm curios too. I'm trying to decide if I can ask Dh to build some kind of toy organizer. This might work well. Donating more and more toys would be a better fix though.

Quote: I've been told that the smell of the sweat attracts the bugs.
Spelling of vanilla sometimes helps but every inch of exposed skin needs to smell of vanilla. When I take the time to coat myself and the children in vanilla water, we can be smelled for miles :) Comparable to a teenager using cologne and reapplying every 2 hours.

We now have 2 goats. The best of the kids were sold. The black spotted kid was really really adorable.
Our goats are currently named Noni and Eve. Noni is black with white ears. Eve is brown with a bit of white on her nose.

Excited for you!!!!

Evening, y'all! I spent most of the day out celebrating my birthday, but I saw a few things I wanted to reply to before heading to bed.

Well my Cochin hen did not make it. She died this morning due to a prolapsed vent. Don't tell the other chickens but she was easily my favorite hen lol.
bradselig ~ So sad! I bet she was beautiful. I wonder why several members have had hens with the same problem this past week. How are the other members' hens w/possible prolapse doing?
@Quinstar Re: Egg Production. We were in peak production until about a week ago and numbers suddenly dropped. The only cause I can think of is the sudden drop in temperatures. It's been unusually cool like other parts of the state have been. Right now it's 65 degrees and Saturday afternoon it's supposed to be 95.
Another topic-- I had forgotten that you had a baby! Details please.
jchny~ Glad to hear that your Dad is being well taken care of and is progressing! So sorry to hear about your Pekin!

Thanks again for all your efforts on Chickenfest! It was lovely and it sounds like you have plenty on your plate without adding in Chickenfest and T-shirts. Weird about the PO and different prices. At my PO they always tell us how much it will be to send it regular post and how much for priority, and then let us decide.

I hope you have a fun weekend despite missing your flock. Sounds like a good cause, at least.

I guess I'm on the BYC Indiana Night Shift.

Oh my gosh, how adorable! How did you end up collecting such a diverse 'flock'? I lived in Australia for a while as a kid, and would love to spend some time with your roo. They are such cool animals. I'd love to meet the rest of your menagerie as well. Wonder if I can convince my DH that we need to go on an 'errand' in your direction...;)

@jchny2000 My children were rolling in the grass there, and playing in the woods. Then they have spent time at local parks playing in the grasses. And we still have our cats that could be bringing it to our place or it could be somewhere on our property. No clear place to put the blame and so far my children don't care they keep right on rolling around in the grass.
