INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

my DW sold a batch of chicks & we shiped to Washington state - it was communicated to the buyer : price of chicks, shipping costs (the materials were calculated / added to this (box, gel, heatpad, etc....)) - so they can know total $$ in advance in case theyd still want to buy or not.
we used paypal, but would also do cash transactions - no checks

I always wanted to be home schooled. Mom would never go for it though! Not lately maybe they went to work for the government and are spying on us now.

Quote: That is a great thing about homeschooling now. Most of the online programs are set up more like the college online classes and the student can message or even video chat with the teachers. Also many lessons are available on video for all levels of subjects. And the advanced high school courses can be taken at the college level for dual credit at many colleges. Costs are a factor. Other options include placement tests to start at a higher level in college and CLEP tests to get credit for classes taken at the high school level if the student does not want to be the youngest one in the college class during their high school years.
And there are books written at the high school level with the intention of being a self study book. Those are the ones I used in high school and they worked well for me. The main part being I knew how to self study before I entered the more difficult subjects. The basics really are needed in order to continue learning the harder stuff. If my reading level had been a 5th grade reading level then sure I would have had a bad time in American lit or any self study subject as reading is required. And I know if my math skills had been at the 5th grade level, there is no chance I would have made it in a calculus class. Now the English / grammar with all of its diagramming, are used for writing. Most jobs want writers or at least a person that can construct a basic outline or email. A second language requires a good knowledge of the first language and its grammar too.

These were exactly the concerns that I had.  Connections Academy answered almost all of them.  Yes, I'm pimping INCA out really hard.  I believe in it a lot.

In INCA the parent isn't responsible for teaching the student.  The student has a class and a teacher who sets the curriculum and course work.  At the kindergarten level, there was more for my wife to do, because a 5-yr-old needs more direct guidance, but as the student gets older, they take more and more responsibility for doing the work.  The classes are a relationship between the teacher and the student, just like in any school, and the parent's role is mostly supervisory.  And, you have the benefit of smaller class sizes, so the teachers have the time to work more directly with each student.

There is less interaction with other children, no way around it.  But, as you said, we have got our daughter in Daisy Scouts, swim lessons in the summer, and we spend as much time as possible with our family so she's around her cousins quite a bit.  We also have memberships at the Indy Zoo and Children's Museum, and because the school schedule is totally flexible, we can go quite often - and that time counts as class time, too.

We may send the girl to a high school when we get there - it will depend on a lot of things.  What I am certain of is that right now, she's getting the best possible education that we have access to.

I dug up the curriculum page that shows courses available at all levels:

Thanks for the info - sounds quite impressive. I'll check it out.

Does anyone know if  there is anyone in the southern part of the state ( I live near Bloomington) that can do npip testing to make sure a few of my birds are not carrying any diseases? I keep these 2 away from the rest of the flock, but would like to know how to get them tested? All their offspring have been dieing and I am trying to figure out why.

Also I was wondering if any of my BYC friends are going to be at the State Fair next week:D . I am going on Thursday and I would love to meet some of you and maybe get some hatching eggs. My birthday is Friday 8/1 and I want to get some new chickens( or hatching eggs) for my birthday from some people I can trust!!!!!:celebrate I really want some Cochin and frizzles, or a cochin/frizzle. Any body know of anyone I can get some from?????
Now I'm no expert on NPIP but I honestly don't think it's going to test what needs to be tested. What are the symptoms? Also look into the Indiana test twelve program. It's going to test for more than npip and it's free.

My micro pig is giving birth right now and I'm stoked! She's got 6 out so far.

I agree. Education is important. You can't get a job without that piece of

paper that said you went to high school. Believe me, I know. I didn't finish middle school and didn't get to go to high school. Am trying to get my G.E.D. but kinda hard without the money to get a tutor.

There is a chance that you might be able to go through this program. there is a phone number to call and ask if you are 18 or older.

I'm teaching my children at home.  Granted they are not fully school age yet.  Still I have heard talk of schools not only starting earlier in the year but for earlier ages too.  I heard there is going to be a test or trial of public school for pre k in Marion county sometime soon.  I don't think that is the answer either.  Somewhere along the way a love of learning instead of computer time or video game time or movie time or even *gasp* chicken (animal) time needs to be transferred to the student.  That is not always easy.  If the student hates going to school or doing school work, teaching is nearly impossible and the fault lies with the student at some point.  College level students should be able to take responsibility for failing a test and not blame the teacher.  I hear college students complain quite a bit about the teacher when the student's only study time was cramming while at a pizza party the night before the test.

Our school system here in WV already have a peek program that children are required to b enrolled in prior to Kindergarten. They test 3yr olds and if they pass the testing they start at three if they don't pass at three they are retested at 4yrs if they don't pass at 4,some of the parents are required to take a parenting class and take a test to see if the parents are "at fault" for the inability of the child t pass this "basic" test. I'm not sure what happens if it is the parents intellect that has stimied the child, I don't think they can legally do anything about it. I'm telling you there are a LOT of inbred idiots in this state popping out kids like puppies!!!
