INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Congratulations to Mother2Hens for Having the #1 post.
barb s ~ Whhhat? I haven't been able to keep up very well with our Indiana Thread this summer, so I never have time to check out the BYC site. My email notifications link me to the Indiana site and bypass the main site. Thanks for letting me know although I don't know what it means. I've won a new car?!

Btw, barb s ~ After I wrote my Thank You about Chickenfest, I later realized and felt terrible for not thanking your boyfriend, Tony, for all of his hard work before/during/after Chickenfest!

My mother and daughter silkies. I love this color. Does anyone know what color rooster I should put with them to get more of this color? I have a paint and a black rooster and I'm guessing neither of them will work.

She has a single comb but I love her to death. And she makes beautiful babies.

Well, I had another 1/2 dozen day today. My new hens are doing great!

Lazy question - will their eggs get larger over time?

This also means I'm ready to cull my slacker. This will be my first chicken processing, and I'm both excited and a little nervous. I still haven't decided how I want to dispatch her. I've thought of a dozen ways but they all seem too complicated. I over-think everything, and sometimes it's a real pain.
For most breeds, they will slowly get larger the first year. Then the second year, there will be fewer eggs, but larger still. Some breeds (phoenix, hamburg, and Fayoumi in my case) start small and stay small. I'd imagine silkies are like that too.

Surprisingly enough, I have some people who absolutely prefer the smaller eggs. According to them, they taste much richer because of a smaller ratio of white to yolk. My MIL loves to make tiny deviled eggs with them. On the opposite note, my FIL loves turkey eggs, cause he can make a huge egg sandwich with them.

I just thought I would get on here to apologize to anyone that wanted chicks or anything from me. I thought I would have some mid summer, but This hatching year has been terrible and a crazy year in general! I do have two broody's sitting on eggs. I honestly don't have that much hope for them, but who knows maybe I will get a few chicks.

Next summer I play to have 4 older (they would be 2 1/2) Ameraucana hens for sale. I wanted to sell them this year. But they have pretty bare backs and plucked beards (they did that to each other), they look pretty pathetic and I won't sell them until they look much better.

I have a hen that color. She will be going into a silver partridge group. Not sure if that will throw the same colors but I hope so. Im thinking mine are from a silver ppartridge roo I had. If you ever decise to sell them, keep me in kind ;)

When you guys make Facebook pages for your farms, do you open an entire new Facebook account or just create a page? Also if you create a page can people see who started te page?

I also have a hen and a pulet that are the opposite in colors and love them as well. I am going to put them with my black roo to see what they produce and later try them with my paint roo.

Pullet above and my her mom below. I have new roosters this year so I don't know if I will get more of either colors this year.

Ok gang I'm confused! My Silkie Diamond hatched out a pretty little Gem in mid June. She started laying again the first part of last week, yesterday she through a hissy and growled at me when I tried t check under her for eggs...she's broody AGAIN!!! is this normal??? Her little Gem is just 5 wks old and still very tiny! Not even completely feathered out! Grrrrr that poor baby still needs it's Mommy! Should I let her have her eggs and let her brood or try t break her so she'll take care of her chick?

ETA: if I do break her will she even bother t continue taking care of her chick? The Roo, Earl, is still in there with her. Would it help if I took him out of the pen (and put him in the Rooster pen)?
