INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I live in Demotte but not "in town". I'm sure you guys will know what that means. I have about an acre on the west side of 65. I have about 34 chickens and 9 ducks. My neighbors all get free eggs and they are all very friendly so I've never had any problems. I picked up two chicks from an assorted bantam collection at Crown Feed and Supply. Pretty sure they are roosters. I don't mind and I don't think my neighbors will either but legally where do I stand? I am having trouble wading through web pages of zoning laws. I'd love to keep them. One is a Japanese bantam and the other is a red old English game bantam. They will both look really awesome in my flock and they have plenty of girls and space to share. Are smaller bantam Roos just as loud as their larger counterparts? I think I will let my neighbors know just in case they have any problems to let me know and I can try to re-home them. I would like to have some unique roosters. I hope I can keep them. Thanks guys!

I got the 1502, direct from GQF. At the time it was the best price.. and I really wish I had got the clear door, and auto filling water system. I do not like hatching anything in the drawer, I have shrink wrap issues from the fan. So I recommend a separate unit still air to hatch in. I have my coolerbator tore down to add a window and what a pain! On the egg trays, I found cheaper ones that goose eggs fit, but the GQF trays are much sturdier and do fit better. even the paper flats work ok, i modified them to add vent holes tho. I like the plastic better, easier to clean. Sally made several good points, I did use the water reservoir more during winter since our house is so dry.
I know winter months they run specials on the sportsman on some different websites, FYI. Free shipping etc you may land a good deal

Thought I would throw this out too:

I've decided on a couple turkey varieties I'm not keeping.  So I have poults available.

4 Mottled Black - 8 Weeks old.  These are from Porters.
5 Blue Slate - 9 weeks old.  4 are from Rural King, 1 was accidentally included with my midget white eggs from someone who also breeds blue slate.

I've already decided I'm keeping and breeding Midget Whites.

Now I just need to decide between Sweetgrass and Pencilled Palms.  I'm probably going to grow them out to adults and then decide.

The blues sound interesting.  How large should they get by November?  Maybe I buy 2 of them off you with the intent of them being the meals.    That leaves me with my 4 so long as I have only 1 male.

Since we got them so late, I think they will be on the small side come Thanksgiving. Depending on how many people you are feeding, two would still go quite a ways.

Love her! She is so cute. What is she a frizzle polish?
Cher is a blue partridge frizzled sizzle. When I bought her, the breeder told me she was a blue sizzle. After I did some reading, interacting with partridge and sizzle owners on BYC, learned about the frizzle genetics and the breed, I've been tutored to her appropriate designation 'partridge' and 'frizzled'. Who knew just buying a cute fuzzball could end up so complicated?!
She's FULL of personality and has no idea she's the smallest in the bunch.
about 12 weeks old now
she's about 4 weeks old here, in her awkward phase

pginsber ~ WOW! I love her! I've wanted a sizzle, and she is beautiful! The color combo is stunning.

You must have skimmed over my posts a few weeks ago about trimming my Silkies' bangs.

lol My son and his GF love to visit the chickens, and his GF even looks at BYC.com at times. She read that Silkies can't see well and trimming the feathers around their eyes makes a big difference. I knew that some of our members trim their Silkies, so I bought some 99 cent Kindergarten "safety scissors." I held each one while my son trimmed and his GF advised. We did the minimum, but enough so we could see their eyes. My two Silkies would hold still and then suddenly wiggle their heads, so you have to be prepared by taking quick snips. The feather hairs are almost like dust, so his GF would blow the feather dust away (like blowing out birthday candles). The change in their behavior was significant! They became much more active and interactive, and we felt good about opening up the world to them-- except for when Ditzy ran away for the night!

You're one of the persons I was hoping would reply. Thank you.

I was wondering about the exact method, which you read my mind and shared here. She does not have a silkie-type comb, she has a quasi-single comb. From what I've read, that's not an awesome trait, but I was more concerned about discerning it from her feather-poof when I trim it.Thanks again for the play by play!

I recall someone on here also used barettes or a clip of some kind, and of course the painter's tape is a good idea, too.

I'm hoping a trim of her poof would change her behavior. She's in with 7 LF, 1 bantam oprington, and 1 silkie. She's the youngest and smallest, and literally RUNS everywhere instead of walking. I wondered if she saw her bangs out of the corner of her eye and thought they were chasing her?

You can trim (carefully!) or some people take painters tape and wrap it around the crest to hold it up. Just not too tight, or you can risk pulling out the feathers.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I wanted to give you ovations to those who helped, but I'm out of them already this morning.

Whew! Fair stuff is finally over for us after a pretty intense 3 weeks. I've feel like I've been gone away from home & from here forever! There's a lot of stuff piled up to do, weeds are all over the garden again and...yes...a couple of RED tomatoes!!! After a few days to catch our breath after county fair we headed down to state fair this past weekend. Chloe gave her rabbit illustrated talk on Food for Freedom -- How Rabbits helped to Win the War (WWII). She was able to do a power point with it (at least half the kids are using technology now instead of posters) and the WWII poster images we had found looked great for the presentation. A lot of people mentioned that they never knew the government had such a program to encourage people to raise their own meat rabbits and chickens. Oh -- and she took Champion in her age division which also earned her a 4-H achievement award trip to Washington DC in October!! She placed 5th in the Rabbit Ambassador contest. She's kicking herself after looking at the scores of the top 5 people. 3rd, 4th & 5th place all had the same score (not sure how they decided to place them). The champion & reserve spots were only a couple points higher. She realized if she had answered 1 particular question on Breed ID differently she could have placed Champion! She's still very happy with how she did. I wore my BYC t-shirt on Sunday, but no one came up to say Hi! Guess that means either none of you were there or you didn't see me or you saw me & I scared you away!!

Now we're getting ready for school to start on Thursday (waaaayyyy too early), but maybe I'll be able to finally focus on my stuff instead of all the kids' things for a change, although....I told Chloe she couldn't start driver's ed until all her fair projects were done....Yikes! it's here now!!

Rita is a Mille Fleur. DH insisted if I was getting more silkies he wanted some MF so we got 4 juveniles and one chick from my cousin's farm. Here are her parents (with a peacock in the back lol):
