Question: how far off the floor/ground is you water nipples?

Question for anyone that knows the answer, I have researched and cant find a diffident answer. I know there is one... lol.
Here goes .. don't laugh... do Silkies come in LF or not? My white Silkies are 18 weeks old and as big as my full grown GC's . I'm so confused. Are my white Silkies NOT Silkies?

That would upset me bad. It looks like they are turning out to be hens, but they are SO big,

I have to rehome My BB Red @jchny2000 ( didn't know if you would be interested seeing you know where the bird come from ) She is way to aggressive for me and the rest of my kids. I think she is 8 weeks old and already a fireball to be nice. But she must go, she is free t good home, just come and get her.
Any takers just drop me a PM. Thanks.

I found Wyandottes to be unfrienfly, skittish, and they also stopped laying earlier than our other breeds. There others who concur. Of course, Wyandotte breeders mostly disagree.

Jersey Giants are too docile for a mixed flock. We liked them, but 2 of our 3 hens were at the bottom of the pecking order and we had to keep them in the garage so they didn't freeze to death. The other hens would not let them stay in the heated henhouse. One turned into an egg eater. The other will be processed when it gets cold this fall.

Can I get your input on worming? I have 40+ birds on a little under an acre. It's fenced in. They have free range access and a large shed I converted into a coop. The shed has an temperature triggered fan and it's well ventilated and kept very clean. I have one sick bird and I've been around forums here for two days now and all anybody can come up with is worms or possibly ticks in the coop. I purchased and have been staring at a bottle of Wazine for two hours now but go don't wNt to do anything unnecessary. I do have 4 and 6 week old chicks right now so I'm really nervous about an outbreak of some kind.
natural is best but I needed it done fast so I used Wazine17, now I am going to add DE to their favorite dusting spots for now and in a few mths I will add it to the feed.

Thanks so much for your information. I am not wanting to get into breeding, at least not right now... I want to get hens only cause I don't want to mistakenly breed or get so many roosters that it's hard on my hens.... so safest bet for me now is to stick with the girls. I just finished my coop... well, to the point that I can start looking for chicks. (I still need the basics (feed, bedding so on). You can see my coop here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/916971/my-1st-chicken-coop-run#post_13951600 I have to say I am pleased with it, and hopefully my girls will be too!!

After looking around, I think I am interested mostly in the Easter Eggers, Silkies, Rhode Island Reds - heck, who am I kidding... I am interested in a variety of different ones and would like to try and have 1 or 2 of many different kinds. My concern is to make sure they can get along with each other & they are healthy & safe! I have land for them to free range (ONLY when I supervise - cause I do have 4 large dogs) but seeing how my land isn't fenced & I KNOW I have a raccoon family living close, they will stay in the run most of the time.

while building my coop, I focused on the ability to prevent snakes, coons and mice from being able to access the coop easily... until I get the girls, I won't know if I was that successful.... we will see. I did get a nice vision camera to keep an eye on the girls - so I am sure the 1st week or so they are in the coop, I'll be glued to my PC watching them! LOL
Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, and Rhode Island Reds. are best IMO for eggs, I love love love my Silkies for pets, and my EE's to add color to my basket... got to have color ( and I love the silly questions "are those eggs rotten? " they are green!! ) I know I'm bad... lol, I have added a few new breeds this year, mostly for color in my back yard... and eggs.. I picked a few breeds for their broodiness cause I want to keep my laying flock going, ( I sell eggs just to help on the feed bill mostly ) I just got some MF's ( they were on NEXT years wish list... lol chicken math strikes again thanks @jchny2000 my enabler lol) Will let ya know how I feel about those, right now I love them but they are still new, and not yet in with the rest of the flock.
So many breeds, good luck... o and watch out for chicken math it gets us all, only the very strong or legally limited ( sorry peeps ) can restrain themselves.

De wormed my flock a few days ago, so we have been tossing the eggs!!! So sad to see these little beauties being tossed.

Over a dozen a day, pretty soon we should be at two dozen daily! That's the goal anyways

I'm in the same boat, but Saturday will be the last day I have to throw then away...

How long do you have to wait after worming before you can eat the eggs again?[/COLOR]
I wormed with Wazine 17 and am having to wait 14 days.

Why am I still awake? I hope to heaven my kids sleep past 5 today.
Good luck with that

@LKShepherd The most important thing you can do to keep predators out of your coop is to bury hardware cloth 10-12" so diggers can't get in. Raccoons are notorious for wiping out entire coops at once.

While putting eggs in lockdown last night, I dropped one about four inches and cracked it. The membranes stayed intact. We melted some food grade paraffin and used a paintbrush to reseal it. Fortunately, most of the cracks were over a small part of the air cell. I candled it, but this particular egg is solidly dark now. It was moving 3 days ago, so I hope it survived the bounce test! :fl
