INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have my first Isbar egg!!!!! Two days in a row! A real pretty sage green so far, I can't wait to see what the other two girls give me!!! The one on the left is the Isbar egg, the one on the right is one of my silkie pullet eggs (aso a new layer!).

I haven't posted pics of the Isbars in a while. The girls had already gone to bed but here is a picture of Harris the Blue Isbar Roo. He is a very pretty boy and very well mannered!

I need to try to get some good shots of the girls this weekend. Here is my favorite girl, Pee Wee, one of the Birchen Marans from Brad. She was the gender confused one as a baby, and then had a bout with broodiness a few weeks ago. I managed to talk her out of it. She is super friendly!

And here is the Hedemora pair.

In other news, I spent much of the day building an auto door out of a car antenna and timer with a light sensor to open and shut it. Big shout out to HoosierCheetah for all his help! I will probably want to build one more before winter

. The Isbar pen is predator safe but I want the wind to be blocked at night as it gets cold (and blue silkie sleeps right next to the door by herself and I don't want her getting soaked in foul weather).

Welcome to all the new folks!
LOVE your roo!

So this is my Legbar pullet I hatched in April. What do you think?

Wish I still had a pic of it as a chick. Maybe I can find one tomorrow.

It looks a lot like a SLW cockerel to me.
Enjoying some evening free range time. My daughter took these photos. I love the sun shining through in this one.

After they had plenty of time for bug and frog hunting we spent some time getting them comfortable being held. Scratch made the perfect lure, lol. Esther (in the foreground) and Houdini (at the back) are two of our three EEs. They are bookends to most of our BOs and Red Stars. Three of our four RSs are now laying. Woo hoo!

Fred even took time to enjoy the treat.

Here's my hubby - aka the Pied Piper of Chickens. As soon as they saw him get the cup of scratch out of the coop they were right behind him. They could hardly wait until he sat down. ;-)
Lovely flock! Enjoyed your pics very much and

for your DH! thanks for sharing!

Why won't pics load? I wanted t share pics of Diamonds newest contribution t my flock. One hatchling out and the other pipped and zipping. These things are definitely noisy little tiny things!!!!

@hoosiercheetah
I'm waiting for a story.....

If you don't hurry up, I'll have to go to bed w/out a story for the night.....

@hoosiercheetah maybe you could write a story that takes place in an amish setting or in an historical setting out west. Maybe the first guy is the hero out west and the second story with the female is a damsel in distress.

Wanting to pick everyone brains... lol I have a special needs house and a Silkie house that I want enough heat in this winter to keep it around 40deg. everything I have read tells me that Silkies aint very cold hardy and don't want to bring them in if I can keep from it. Then there's the special need girls, just don't think they would do very well either, especially if we get another winter like we had last year.
So heres the thing... I don't want to use heat lights, does anyone know of another way to do this.

Silkies do just fine in the winter, just don't let them get wet. Mine don't have any heat, and I've never had a problem. Even in extremely low temps.Thing about adding heat is if it goes off it is hard on them to adjust to the cold when they aren't use to it That is when you'll have problems.. None of my birds have heat, and do just fine. It is the draft/wind that get them. so make sure coop is draft free. I wouldn't ad heat.

would one of the premier one brooder heater stands work? They are similar to the eco glows but cost less and offer a cover to prevent roosting on the heater.

I am so nervous! Just got 2 ayam cemani eggs. Picking them up tomorrow. I not sure how I'm going to handle the stress over these next 21 days!
How in the world did you get your hands on these eggs? Please keep us updated, this is really really exciting!!

I had my original 7 silkies outside all winter this past winter with a 250 watt heating light. I did bring them inside when the polar vortex brought the temps down below negative 10. I didn't lose any to the cold and none of them got frostbite. Would be interested to hear what others think would be a good replacement for traditional heat lamp.

Disclaimer: I have never used one of these and I don't heat my chicken house.

Here is something you can look into. You'd have to contact them and see what kind of heat output you might expect in a "whole chicken house" situation. They come in wall mount or hanging. They would at least "take the chill off" but don't know if they would heat as warm as you're wanting.
