INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

any time glad I could help. TSC is the cheapest here on the deer net. And Loews was cheapest on the 4x4's here anyway, dont know about your town. but like I said we do a little at a time.
O and we put it all together with zip ties.
I love my zip ties. Never buy just a small bag! Thanks again!

@pipdzipdnreadytogo

I don't usually take my sprouts to the fodder stage - just the sprout mat stage. I love @Kassaundra s burlap bag sprouting and before I read how she did it, I just did the sprouts on the counter or in fodder pan like above. (Here is a post I did a long time ago about the counter top sprouts and fodder for a SMALL flock )

Now I use Kassandra's method and I LOVE it. Easy, easy easy to do, easy to feed.

Edited to add: This is Kassaundra's video demo of how she does the sprout bags.

Invert the bag on a post you pound into the ground. They'll help themselves and clean the bag right up! (I also throw some around on the ground so the lowers can get them.

I thought about doing this last year and didn't. I think I will be doing this this year though. They really seemed to miss greens in the winter, fresh greens that is. I bought greens and chopped them up. A little more prep time, but once set up sounds like it runs well. Thanks!

If you keep your MF roo next spring when mine hatch out some chicks I will give ya a pullet if you want one. I will only keep the bearded ones, going to work on breeding only bearded MF's and the trio I have right now consists of Mom and Dad that throws both, and 2 bearded, next spring I will find a non-related bearded roo and put with my bearded hens. So I will have some non-bearded if ya like.
I have 4 pullets-2 are non-bearded and 2 are bearded. I actually like the non-bearded better. Would you be interested in trading the next time I'm in Terre Haute? Will have to check with DH to make sure he's okay with it too.

Small scale fodder overview (works with barley or any grain)
This is super helpful! Thank you! Where do you find grain at? I'd love to do this but not sure where to buy the grain from.

I love this too! Thank you so much for sharing!

Thought I'd better give a better explanation of the burlap bag sprouting so it will hopefully make more sense:

I sewed burlap bags like Kassaundra shows in the video that I posted before, but made some smaller to start with.

When I feed them, I open the bag and shake as many of them as will fall out all around the run so they have a treasure hunt (boredom buster). Then I had pounded a wood post down in the run and invert the bag and set it on top. They clean all the sprouts right off the bag.

At a given time, I have 4 bags going so there is always one ready to feed and 3 others sprouting. The steps:

-Put the sprouts in the bag and thoroughly rinse. K uses hot water; I've been using cold as the hot water here is coming through a softener.

-Put the sprout bag in a bucket and fill with water; soak overnight.

-Remove bag from soak bucket and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

-Lay out flat on whatever surface you're using. K uses the lid from a rubbermaid tote. Works well. Distribute the seeds flat over the whole surface of the bag. Set something on top to keep it dark.

-Each day you're starting a new bag repeating the steps above; stack each successive bag on top of the stack when it's done with it's 24 hour soak and start the next bag soaking and on and on

At day 4 you feed from the first bag and then keep the cycle going. Each day there will be a bag ready to go.

Great for providing winter greens!

Thank you thank you thank you!

I did some research into Big Momma's feather loss and it being mites. I have determined that my chickens have lice :barnie   I am glad I know what it is so she can feel better and the rest of my flock does not start looking and feeling like her.   I purchased the seven dust but have a few concerns.

Does anyone know if Seven Dust is safe to use on a broody that is sitting on eggs?

Is it safe for young chicks also?

This is my first year raising chickens and I have not had to deal with anything like this.  Any tips would also be very appreciated on getting rid of the nasty buggers.

I'm fairly new at raising chickens too but lezrned the hard way (mine got mites) to be sure that WILD birds cant get into your runs and coops, dont allow them near their feed nor bedding. Wild birds carry all kinds of nasty parasites that can infect your domesticated fowl. After you have treated the birds and there coop n run it might help to also use some sevendust to treat your yard also (if they free range).

I thought I saw posts about it here not too long ago, but I don't remember who it was or how far back. Does anyone here sprout fodder for your birds over the wintertime? I've been thinking about getting things together to try it out and am wondering what others do with it. Mainly, what species do you sprout and where do you get the seeds? Also, how do you set it up and how long does it take before it's ready to toss to the girls? All I can really find on the subject is something about soaking seeds daily and letting them grow so many inches, etc. (But to be honest, I haven't spent too much time looking at it. )

And since I'm posting, we're getting pretty close to one month away from the Lebanon Central Indiana Poultry Show. I've asked before, but who's going? Anyone planning on showing birds? How difficult is it getting out of there without 10000 more birds? I'm getting excited for looking for Call Ducks there, especially since we're finally starting to get things around for the duck coop and yard (hopefully... soon... ish... ). Can't stop browsing the Duck section and looking at Call Duck pictures. :celebrate

I can't remember who it was, but last winter there was a "teaching post" from someone who sprouted red wheat (?) seed in burlap bags then hung them on posts the run to feed their birds. I was thinking about doing it this year if I can find a good source for seed. And if they would be so kind as to make the post again.

Thank you thank you thank you!
I only have 1 non-bearded at the moment but yes I would trade ya. I will probably have more next spring when I let the adults hatch out some chicks.

I really enjoy the upcoming events posts but I'm out of ovations.

My goats are very much like puppies and even have the long droopy ears for 2 out of 3 of them. I just ordered goat hoof trimmers and identification stuff online. Another time I need to say thanks to @Leahs Mom for posting about Premier1. I'm so glad they not only sell chicken stuff but goat stuff too.

This is the first year, I started putting it up this summer cause of the feed cost last winter with feeding the wild birds more than my flock. So I too am waiting to find out how it will hold up to the snow. but I am already seeing a difference in feed consumption in the pens that I have done.
Ah, okay. Well, keep us posted, if you don't mind! :)
I am going. I show there. I don't know how to help you on not coming home with much, because I plan to spend lots if money there lol. I do every year. Last year I went down with 11. Sold 2, showed 9. I came back with 2 dozen
 Bad example! I will hopefully come home with only two more birds than I started with. Maybe three, if someone's selling a trio of calls. :D
I'll be there too. Hope the weather is better this time. Really cold with rain last year. We were hoping to have a meet up with other BYCers there, but it was just too miserable to hang around outside. I'm thinking of trying to find a source for either a white or white laced red cornish rooster to cross with my bresse hens. I'm really happy with how my bresse boys are turning out, but it could be a fun project.
Oh, I remember that from last year! :/ I hope it's a nicer day as well! Well, I'll be representing in my Indiana BYCers T-shirt--and keeping an eye out for others in the same shirt! ;)
Small scale fodder overview (works with barley or any grain) --- It works well, but be careful what you start. You’ll end up flats of sprouts and fodder everywhere.
Thought I'd better give a better explanation of the burlap bag sprouting so it will hopefully make more sense: --- Great for providing winter greens!
Thanks much, both of you! :thumbsup Now I have somewhere to work from! I am noticing when I search for it that there's a lot of talk about sprouts versus fodder. I was thinking they were basically the same thing--I guess I'm more looking at sprouts, however? Anyway, I'll have to give a few methods a test-run and see what works best for me. :D pginsber, just wondering, is there any concern that the bleach might absorb into the seeds some and be eaten by the birds, or is the amount considered negligible? Also, either of you (or anyone, for that matter), where do you get your seeds? I remember reading some time ago about contamination in a few brands wild bird seed, which was what my initial thought was to use, but I'm now going to avoid that (or at least those brands). I'm thinking some sort of wheat or grass might be better for the job, anyway?

Yup, I remembered that as well! :) It seems like there was another post about it more recently as well, but I can't remember how far back it was or who wrote it. Oh, well.

The posts in the run is me I think. The burlap sprout bags that I just re-shared.

I get my seeds the same place I get them for feed - at the feed mill.

When purchasing seed for sprouting, you need to be sure it is UNTREATED. Some "bird feeding seeds" are treated to keep them from sprouting as folks with bird feeders don't like the dropped seeds growing on their nice lawns!!!
