INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I got the "pullet surprise" from Ideal.   She is the only one that looks like that tho.  I ordered 10 pullets, but got 15 chicks.... so sure I have 5 roosters in this batch.    I have only identified 1 so far!!

Yeah, I looked through all of Ideal's LF stock and I do think she's a black sexlink. :) She should lay lots of brown eggs for you when she's older!

Thanks for the photos!  It's helpful to imagine what I might be able to rig in the barn here for winter.

A question -
Am I seeing that correctly - that your areas are only about 4 ft. high?  Will they have tops on them to keep the birds in each division?  Or maybe I'm seeing that wrong?

Believe it or not they all stay in the stall area and outside for the most part. I have a vouple ee girls that dont but no biggie. The silkies will stay in their 4 x 8 coops for the winter. They will get time out here and there but will be fine in there. I just hope my baldies get their feathers back. They need to molt. Its roo damage regrowth right now.

Quote: My 4 "not happening" bugs are spiders, bees, ants and roaches. All 4 really creep me out and I cannot stand to even see them. Honeybees don't count, they are totally a different critter, non aggressive. I worked with a lot of low income families in the early 80s as a home economist and saw a lot of the bugs that invade homes. Ugh.. really upsetting.
I had to keep a scorpion and a tarantula in an animal control case, until it went to court. Talk about being creeped out feeding them... Was very glad when it was over and they were rehomed.

I'm guessing some of you would not have done well in my summer science camp.

Each year I offer a couple different camps, but my "Bugs" program is always a hit. Several kids started with me about 5 years ago & return each year, so I must constantly change the program. This year our guests were Giant Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches! We had races, a cockroach pull, a few behavioral studies, and even a hissing contest. (I have a very patient hubby, but there's no way he'd allow roaches in the house. They currently reside on our porch awaiting frost. A few went home with kids as "pets" but I did not find a home for the remaining few.)

They are so big, and off the wall weird I guess they don't bother me as much! But i still couldn't hold one!

I bet the program is so much fun for the kids, WTG for being involved

Fantastic for the kids.
Okay, it's not all bugs for me, but roaches are a big, big, big NO!
hide.gif

I can do butterflies (but not caterpillars or moths). Things like mosquitoes and house flies don't bother me (but they still annoy the heck out of me!). I love fireflies! And I rather like snails and slugs, of course, but they aren't really bugs. I had a pet snail for a while (named Sheldon
hide.gif
) that I actually had found in the woods right here at home. Also, that biology class I mentioned, I had found a teeny tiny snail in the lake and kept it for a short while. It rode on my thumb while I looked for other things in the gunk. Then it came time for everything to be preserved for slides and things, and I couldn't put the little guy in, so my bio teacher told me to just toss him back into the lake. Lucky snail.

Like I said, I have no rational reason for why certain bugs freak me out and others don't. I just have... issues.

LOL i think its a life experience or the feel of one on your hand.

Okay. Speaking of bugs....

The first time I purchased dried mealworms for my chickens it was just nasty looking at those things. I always put them into a large canning jar and seal it w/my vac sealer so they stay fresh longer. So here is this 1/2 gallon jar full of worms.
sickbyc.gif

I just couldn't put them in my hand to throw out on the ground for the chickens. I had to shake it from the jar.

THEN...
My grandson came over one day and saw them. He says, "Can I eat some?" (This is the honest truth.) I said, sure. And he did.

So the story is that some cultures eat them as a protein source. He was in class in Seattle and they had a unit about things that different cultures eat, then the teacher bbq'd some and anyone that wanted to try could. He volunteered and liked them.

I am finally able to put them in my hand and throw them around. But it took awhile...

BARBEQUED MEALWORMS, ANYONE?
bbq-skewer.gif
Thats wild, and yes folks eat them! I wont be doing it but the chickens and scovy sure will

Went out this afternoon and one of my chicks is gone

We had a hawk visit later so I assume that's where it probably went. Thank goodness we were out in the yard this time, it didn't get anything!

Oh and I have a sick bird I'm not sure what to do with

I am terribly sorry for both birds, what is your sick one doing?
Snagged a pretty good deal on Craigslist today! A $331 petsmart gift card for $150! Too good to pass up!
Yeehaw! no kidding thats awesome!!!

Ugh, I've been bad again! Picking up some silkie hens and chicks on Tuesday and just won another pair of jubilee orps and another pair of mottled orps. I guess I will be combining my partridge silkie pen with my partridge showgirl pen. Does that count as downsizing? Lol

Yep it does! After all, its adding another coop
lau.gif
and combining flocks for winter is important for warmth! So there ya go, good reasoning and excellent planning for winter
big_smile.png

No others hatched
sad.png
. But do still have 2 more eggs incubating. Hoping for the best with them. Trying to increase humidity a little to see if that helps.

Good luck

I read up a lot and it sounds like they are a hard hatch. Special attention should give you a good start on the flock.
Here's the little cutie! Hopefully it's a pullet!

THRIVE lil one

They are growing up soooo fast!! I put them into the coop tonight for the 1st night out there. I have been out there every couple hours to make sure they are ok, and they seem to be loving it. But now as it is getting dark, I am getting worried about predators !! LOL Is that normal? I have double, tripled checked doors, cracks, corners... and see nothing dangerous, but then again, Im not a predator.... I'm so scared!! LOL

BTW What kind of chicken do you think she is? Here is a pic of her standing up...

She looks rumpless almost but am not sure about her breed.
I have some friends near cloverdale that had two male great pyrs show up at their farm last week. They have been unsuccessful at trying to find the owners and are looking to re-home them. Please PM me if you are interested and want contact info.

f they weren't adult dogs I would be very interested. I would love to add the breed here, They are perfect for our needs. I would neuter them without a doubt, a free ranging dog would need to be fixed.
Well we are almost done with winter barn prep. One more coop to build where the little silkies are in the picture. So we will have a main flock coop far left, bantam next, girl silkies, then the one we need to build is boy silkies. We had a bunch of old doors so we used themfor west wall insulation in the coops. Aside of bringing the ducks in and getting the bantam flock in and adjusted to the main flock, and bringing the silkies in, we are about done! :)oh ya the plastic is training the stubborn ones to coop up and not sleep on the middle fences.

My baldies are using the undivided coops for a bit to get their feathers back.
I like what you have done! Well planned and I bet you are excited!

Y'all, I was looking up pictures of my Speckled Sussex when they were younger to compare to someone else's bird on another thread and I came across pictures of Frou-Frou when she was between 7 and 8 weeks old.
love.gif
Oh my goodness, wasn't she adorable?!

My big fuzzy-wuzzy now.

ETA: It occurs to me that a 'then and now' pair of pictures would be more useful with the ages of the bird in both pictures...
lol.png
That second picture was around her 2nd birthday.

She is gorgeous! I love the maran breed. We are leaning more towards them as a permanent breed here.

Quote: Agreed, she does look sexlink with the brown chest. The boys keep a white dot a long time on the head.

So I will try and finish what I started last night.

Pic's of mom and the new babies well they will be 2 weeks old Tuesday.

ok this is still taking way to long maybe I need to do a clean out.

Anyway, Cattle Update : BIL picked up 2 feeder calves for 1.72 a lb. He said those were among the higher but they were Angus. Said most were going for 1.19 lb and 1.62 lb. Said Bottle calves were few and still cheep, I asked what he was calling cheep and he said they were selling for 50.00 and 60.00 but all they had were Jersey's.
The larger cows were going for close to 2.00 lb. and the highest heifers were going for 2.19 lb and he said bulls were in the 1.95 -2.00 lb and about the same for steers. Hope this helps.

Cory Creek, I wasn't able to go this week end but had a Friend write down all she seen, and it is a long list, all kinds of chickens ranging from 5.00 to 30.00. they had 6 different breeds of duck and they were going in the range of 6.00 to 15.00. Had a pair of Peacocks just blue is what she says, no owner was around for her to ask, the had a price of 50.00 for the pair or 30.00 eh. Said they had Pigeons too but couldn't get prices on them, all she said was they were weird looking... lol sorry. She picked me up a boot warmer that I am going to try in my MF pen this year. She got it for 5.00.
And she said they had Roosters out the behind cheep as in 2 and 3.00. Of course they had their normal puppy mill pups there too.

dont get me started on that!!

I have a job interview Tuesday, Wish me luck with that, really need a 2nd income around here.
The SS still has no job he isn't even looking. A friend of his wanted to get him on with the Laborers Union but he just disappeared for a few days and messed that up!!! Getting real annoyed at him. He is 23 and still running around acting like he is 16. Wanting money for this and tghat and not doing snot around here to help out even. I paid him 100.00 to help me get the barn and the garage cleaned out for the winter,,,, NOT!!!! I didnt want to give him the money till the job was done but DH said he would make sure he did the job!!! Well it's been 3 mths!!! End rant. just had to get that off my chest, thanks.
ok it's 4 am and I have an hour before I have to get up and start my day, going to bed, the dogs are in and I'm tired,
G-night all

I agree. I have been randomly attacked by bees all summer. Before this year the only other time I was stung was when I was 3 years old and I was sleeping.. What a surprise wake up call. I am ok with almost all other bugs just not bees.
