INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

A shed for sale on CL that would make a perfect cute little coop almost identical to the one Leah's Mom has. The shed is not mine or anyone I knows. If It was I would be trying to talk the owner into keeping it full of chickens. http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/grd/4720141450.html It may not look that cheap but I have seen these sell for so much more new.

I'd love to have that!!! Would make good use of it!

This has been a very tough week for me. Last Friday, I got a letter from the city saying I needed to remove the chickens from my property by November 9. Someone supposedly complained about the chickens and honeybees. I don't really believe this. All of my adjacent neighbors love my chickens. They come and visit them every week. They bring their kids and grand kids over to walk around the garden, play with the chickens, watch the bees work and help "on the farm". They also get free eggs and honey. The letter says I need 10 acres to have chickens. They included the ordinance they are citing, and when I read the ordinance, it actually says I need 0.2 acres for chickens. I actually own 0.33 acres and personally called the mayor's office and 2 different departments to make sure chickens were legal in city limits before buying them.
So sorry to hear about this, but I hope you find just the perfect farm for you and your chickens and bees!
I posted this on the Natural Chicken Keeping thread...but wanted to post here too. (So this is reruns for some of you.) Well, boys and girls.... I did something that I said I'd never do. Well, really, I did something I said I would "probably never" do. This post is a confession of my doings. Ready? | | | | | | | I had 2 16 week old cockerels SHIPPED to me. There. I said it. SHIPPED. THROUGH THE MAIL. Besides that, they are "started" birds. Another thing I always recommend that folks don't do. Speaking of quarantine....it seems like some chicken keepers have more sense than the CDC..... :rant
Phew, that's a scary process! Glad they both made it safe and sound! I can't bring myself to have birds shipped to me through the mail--especially seeing how badly the hatching eggs we got were treated. :/ Yeah, if only they put in half the amount of work as I put into building the quarantine pen for Malcolm and Trudi... :rant
That was yesterday. Today..... I wanted to get the new boys on the grass (away from the main flock) as soon as possible so I did some rigging..... Have an old swingset frame here from when I was a kid!!!!! Yep, I said old. Had a few kennel panels around waiting to be used elsewhere. Add some plastic netting I also had around. A few clips. And bedsheets just to shield from hawks since I didn't have a top. And.....
This looks great!! Now all you need is a small, secure coop to attach to it and you have a nice breeding pen. ;)

Jewel with her 5 ducklings. She is so funny to watch with them. She must think these chicks are very slow. She has been giving daily scratch lessons since Monday and today I think she gave up on that and tried to teach them to dust bathe.

:love Too cute!

I won't be going to the show again this year in Lebanon :hit . Pretty, well REALLY disappointed. DH has to work all weekend. We are still hoping to make Connersville in November, I think he is more disappointed than I am.. His work is seasonal so "you gotta make hay when the sun shines". And pour concrete and gravel before the ground freezes. He is honestly more disappointed than I was! DH wants to add a black japanese bantam to our OEGBs. No idea what the breed is, he said he will know when he sees it. I googled pics, so far I see a sebright or serema type tail. white earlobe. theres too many breeds to be sure. His cousin (I called him too!) calls them bantam japanese, its a tiny black bird, erect tail. quite cute and interesting if thats the breed.

Aw, I'm sorry you couldn't go! :hugs Sounds like they are talking about Japanese bantams. Mom and I only saw a few there. I imagine they aren't too terribly common because they are somewhat difficult to breed. They have a lethal gene (short legs) that kills about 25% of the chicks before they hatch, and another 25% don't inherit the gene. Basically, out of all the eggs you set from them, only about half of them will have the proper genetics.

We did not make it today either. Several things came up last night that just made it clear we could not go.

Anyone that does go, please if you can, get pictures of the blue Sumatra's, the RIR, the BLRW, and the Crested Cream Legbars. Those were the maim breeds I wanted to look at. The back ups were the buff orps and Barred rocks. I enjoy seeing how big the orps get compared the the hatchery orps I raised and sold off.

Editing to request Turkey and duck pictures too.

Maybe someone should just make a video of all of the birds as they walked through the show. That would be great for those of us that just could not make it.

So sorry I didn't see your post or I would have taken some pictures! I definitely wish I would have taken a few, as well as videos (especially of those turkeys, they had me giggling good!).

Well, Trudi and Malcolm are settled in for the night. :love Unfortunately, I'm realizing more and more how small these guys are. You see, they are quarantined in a basement area and there are a lot of boxes down there as well. Well, when I went to herd them into their night-time pen, they darted right in and between some of the boxes! :th Some box shifting later, and they're safe and sound in their pen now. Phew! Now I know their tricks, so we'll see if they get into any more trouble tomorrow night.

They let me pet and hold them for a short while after I got them in (not by choice, I might add, but they were a lot more calm than they were when we bought them). It's amazing how thick their feathers are! And so soft, too! Malcolm has the cutest chubby cheeks, and Trudi is so feisty! I got a good talking to for 'mishandling' her, needless to say. :D

It was a fun day at the show. I saw one person wearing an Indiana BYC shirt. I will get to posting some pics eventually. I only came home with 6 chickens which is pretty good for me

I was at the show in the morning. I didn't see anyone with a T-shirt. I had mine on, but it was cold, so I had a coat on, but you could only see the shirt from the front....I must of missed some people that way.

I didn't see @SallyinIndiana 's post either, so didn't take any picture.

Saw lots of really nice birds. Significantly fewer large fowl than last year, which is both worrying and disappointing. But what was there was very high quality. As Pip'd said earlier, you need to see the size of some of these boys and girls just to believe it. Didn't see any birds I was interested in buying, so saved some money there. I do think I may try showing my Mottled Java's next year there just to see if I can get others interested in the breed. To this day, the Javas I have are still the only one's I've ever seen live. Was hoping someone would have some White or White Laced Red Cornish, but no luck there.

All in all, I'm glad I went. I saw a lot of gorgeous birds, chatted with a few exhibitors, and got a better idea of what it is like to show. Hope everyone else who went had a good time too.

Ok. Finally got off my butt and took pictures of some of the birds I want to sell. I figured I'd post on here before I post on CL. Send me a pm if you are interested.

I'll start with Turkeys...

First is a proven breeding trio of Royal Palms. He's gorgeous. They made lots of great babies this year, but there are quite a few Royal Palms out there, and I want to devote my space to some breeds you don't see as often. They are all around 1 1/2 years old and the girls have stopped laying for the winter.

In all his 'Look at ME!' Glory!

He's a courting. (this was about a month ago)

One of the girls.

In his non-puffed up state.

Gobble Gobble!

I'll post more pics of the others tomorrow. Don't want to overdo it.

We got our breeder pens moved into the pole barn they still need their winter lights installed along with the dog water bowls but first we are going to get some more shavings in there. Nothing like cleaning and filling a water bowl only to have the birds toss the new shavings everywhere. For tonight they are having fun with their store bought shavings.

When you use the heated bowls, do you do anything to restrict the openings so that they don't get frostbitten wattles?
