INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote: Its easy to introduce an adult, but do quarantine your new bird away from the flock at least 30 days. Its a stressful event for a single bird to relocate. Groups or at least pairs do much better. Small flocks that stay confined although healthy, may have less resistance to disease. The same applies to the new ones coming in.

My husband and I live outside of Paragon. We only have 7 pullets and a rooster. My daughter fell in love with the chickens when they had them at Rural King this past Spring. My mantra use to be "Nothing with feathers." My daughter has always wanted a peacock. Well, I was out voted and now we have our own "flock". We would love to get more, but the coop we bought is too small. I am looking to buy or build another one soon. We spent way too much on the first one, so we are trying to be a little more frugal this time around.

We have 6 Buff Orpingtons Pullets, 1 Buff Rooster and 2 Ameraucanas. I would love to get some Rhode Island Reds and Plymouth Rocks. I also need a breed that lays white eggs. My dad won't eat a "wild" egg. So I am going to fake him out with "wild" white eggs. LOL I also want to see if he and I can surprise my husband with a bigger coop.

My 9 year old daughter loves going out in the morning and afternoon collecting eggs. These birds have been a God-Send to us. My daughter has Aspergers and has several severe sensory issues. She loved the soft little chicks and will actually spend time outside to be near the flock. I feel funny calling 8 animals a flock. LOL She is normally an indoor girl. It is fantastic to see her feel so excited about finding the eggs. She wants more chickens and I will do what I can to keep her interested.

I am so happy to have other Hoosiers to get information from that have been in this game longer. Maybe getting some coop ideas.

Happy Clucking!

That's wonderful that your daughter enjoys chickens. I'm sure you know about the benefits of therapy animals. Many of us on this thread who deal with less severe issues like depression or anxiety have discussed how chickens have benefitted our lives. They are such fun animals-- so fascinating to watch.

Btw, I named my three remaining Black Bantam Cochin Girls (courtesy of your hatching eggs).
Their names are Friday, Sunday, and Monday since they hatched on those days. Tuesday and Wednesday are the ones who went missing. (Saturday was Bonbon's day off).

@chickiebaby1 Darling chicks! Is this adorable or what???

@irtehun I like your faverolles -- and how do you like your iPhone 6 Plus? I'm jealous.

Hello all,
We have 4 EE's born Apr 13th that haven't laid yet. Is that normal, or am i doing something wrong?

Also, we have 3 roosters, but need to get rid of two that have begun to be aggressive to my little girl. Is it normal for roosters to go after children but not adults? She hasnt done anything wrong to them.

I'm beginning to think this winter is not going t be good! I hate being a "Negative Nancy" but I need some help. Because I have been trying to deal with Chickee I haven't spent time with my girls outside. Today I went out to feed n water and decided to let them out to run around for the day. Weeeell... Earl chased Pickles into the duck pond, I got her out and brought her in to dry her off and and calm her down. I don't honk she's going back into her pen with Philo n Dilly. I neglected my babies so much I didn't know poor Pickles has an infected eye and she's whistling when she breathes. This is a sinus infection right?
I bathed her in nice warm water and cleaned up her eye, trimmed the long feathers away from it and rubbed Vet RX on her beak and around her head to relieve the congestion. Is there anything else I can do for her? Can you put Vet RX around her eye? Will it help?
You're not a Negative Nancy! You've had bad luck with your animals lately. I agree with @kabhyper1 I wouldn't put VetRx in your chicken's eyes. Camphor is made from turpentine.

Here's a link that has a good post by an experienced person "speckled hen" (toward the bottom of page) How to apply VetRx on Chicken - Backyard Chickens

This link explains all of the uses for VetRx VetRx Directions for Poultry

Elections are coming up. I have gotten multiple calls today to see if I plan to vote, vote early, or vote for so and so and his entire party. Three different calls and ultimately the data collected was all the same. I have to wonder how my name / number got on the polling lists. For whatever reason it got me thinking, just maybe there might be chicken friendly politicians out there. Anyone have a link to a listing of politicians in support of backyard poultry or a list of those against it? I realize it is not the largest issue being discussed in the media but it is the small things that tend to make a difference in everyday life. It really is the local stuff like the local schools trying to increase property taxes above and beyond tax caps that get missed sometimes.
Pro Poultry Politicians
SallyinIndiana has a great idea considering all of the news stories and posts we've read in the past year about a trend toward limiting or no longer allowing backyard chickens. I'm not sure how to go about this. It would be helpful if those of you who have gone through ordinance changes would post the positions of who was in charge as well as the positions of those who voted on ordinance changes.

I am so terribly sorry, I missed your post about your sweet Chickee

Please know you are in my prayers, as well as Chickee too. At her age, it would be terrible for her to endure the "cure" and may not even help her. Its good that you are giving her the consideration to not put her through it. Its terribly painful to say goodbye. She has had a wonderful life with you.
I lost my best friend Rommel to osteocarcinoma (bone cancer) at 9 years old. I saw he was limping one morning and rushed him in for an Xray. I saw the cloudy spidery veins and just bawled..When we discussed his options, the vet ( also a very close friend ) Was very honest with me. She explained that they could do surgery (amputation of his left front leg), and could possibly stop the cancer. But the chemo would take a toll on kidneys, liver... and complications from it, he had less than 25% chance of surviving and maybe 6 more months at best. Let alone the impact of the amputation. Dogs at that age and size have difficulty adjusting. She was crying as much as I was, we both adored him. She even asked me to get a 2nd opinion because she was emotionally attached to his case. I did. I could not put my baby boy through that misery just to see him suffer and die from complications. Quality of life falls into our hands as a pet owner and their best friend. Hard decision.

Its been over 10 years now, but no dog since has filled his place in my heart. Rommel was a rescue from horrible conditions, an exceptionally large Rottweiler. He was not adoptable due to his breed in the city I worked in. When his 3 day hold was up, he went home with me, period. What a gentle, loving friend! He tolerated every stray I brought home, dog, cats, reptiles and wildlife needing rehabbed. At the end with the pain he was in he still loved hugs and comfort from us. Many a trip to Dairy queen for his plain cheeseburger and mom's chili dog (he didn't like pickles) Rommel and I had a date every friday afternoon. He went every where with me. Never regretted it a second, and probably won't ever have another dog steal my heart the way he did.

Thanks you. And I am living in the past over here lol. I have an iPhone 4s. I love it. I will never own anything but am LG or an apple product unless I absolutely have to. I want to get the iPhone 6, but I am content with my 4. I don't understand when people give the iPhones such a hard time. Mostly since the galaxy has came out, but it is too different for me. I don't like the galaxy's.
