INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I agree.  Most of the juniors consider their birds pets, while for many adults they're a business proposition.  I know breeders who will cull birds that aren't show quality; they have so many that there is no attachment issue.  That's hard for me to accept, so I won't have a large number making it to championship row.  It's hard to even perform a "mercy killing."

Plan to go to the Ohio National on Friday.  Not showing this time but want to get there early enough to get a good look at the sale birds before they're too picked over.

The Connersville show is back on the schedule this year.  It's a 2-day show Nov 22-23.

Perfectly stated. I am fine with culling. But my culling is rehoming or hiring someone to do it for me.

Do you have a Indiana bycers shirt? Maybe I will see you.

I have never been to connersville

Has anyone tried solar lights in their coops? I just received mine and will be installing it this weekend. This one will go 2 hours on full power or 4 on low. Seems like about the right amount of time for the ladies.

@SallyinIndiana
On the smell in the barn - were you able to get rid of that? Was your barn a dirt floor or cement?

So far I have had ZERO rodent issues but that's because of the way the hen shed is set up. Since they're going in the pole barn for winter that will be a whole new game. They will be fed inside. And it is easily accessible to rodents (unlike the hen shed). But I store all food inside the house in the basement so the storage area won't be an issue.

My sister in law works for folks that have chickens and they used the noise things. I'm not sure if they worked or not, honestly. There is an old one here in the garage that my dad put in there and I still catch mice in the garage (which I use for quarantine). So ... do they really work?

I really want to preempt and be proactive before there is an issue. That barn has never been used for animals so there was no draw except, perhaps, to get out of the weather. I was really hoping to hear that someone had used the bucket/pnut butter thing successfully but haven't really heard much good yet.
The smell faded over time. BUT we did nothing other than air out the barn to get rid of it. I'm sure there is a product out there that might have sped up the process. It worked out that the poison time ending in the spring and we would easily leave the doors and 2 tiny windows open.
The floor is concrete but not in perfect condition, not horrible but not perfect either.
I don't store food in the house or basement anymore. Mites are too much work to get rid of and keep gone.
The noise things, I have found that they work for about 18-24 months before needing to be replaced. Not sure why, maybe the mice get used to the noise. I do replace with a different brand or model each time just in case they make a slightly different noise.

I am so bored.

Someone convince me that it's a bad idea to order chicks now and try to brood them in my garage over the winter.
I'm going to try and hatch a few for the new year but I know I'll get sick of brooding them. Still it will be nice to try and get a head start.
But the winter chicks cost more in heating costs and they grow a bit slower too, another cost to consider.

I was considering getting some chicks this weekend. So that is a bad idea? What about 12 week pullets?

Another question I have is we are considering hatching eggs. My daughter seems to think from her research that it is easy. Lol. I am thinking if you can buy the chicks, why do it. What is everyone's thoughts?

Yes, I saw him! Terrible is all I can say lol. You would think an adut would know better......wel i guess I doesn't necessarily hve to be an adult as kids can show in an open show-you just don't see it as much. I like open shows much better-harder competition. And there really weren't that many AMs. There were only 3 in the junior show that weren't mine and there was only like 6 in the open show. I am just talking LF. I scratched my only bantam am and didn't really look at them.and did you hear that annoying guinea on the youth barn! Most annoying repetitive noise I have ever heard in my life!

Haha, I'm used to Guinea noises, I guess! I only have 11, but man, when they start screaming... And then the girls sound like a squeaky wheel when they get going. I was more interested in the turkeys in the junior show, the two Narragansett toms that were displaying and gobbling. That's such a hilarious sound!

I recommend the metal cans from the pet food section at Rural King, or the trash can section at TSC.

The mice that we found upon moving here were here due to the prior owner improperly storing pet food.

I agree--no mouse problems here! I've found droppings on the lid, but they can't get inside to the feed so they don't stick around. :)

Hang in there! My youngest DD is feeling it too. She is at IUPUI studying phsyc and its really wearing her thin. She is working towards a career in the children's field.
Thanks for sharing the pictures, they look so tiny and precious :love Looks like you found a very sweet pair.

Thanks, I'm hanging on! :) Today was a real trial, though. I was up late doing homework, then had to be up early to do my morning chores before leaving for class. :th Needless to say, calculating derivatives, critical numbers, and relative extrema is not as easy when half asleep and suffering from a headache.

They are tiny, after seeing some of the other duck breeds out there! I posted this picture elsewhere for a size comparison, but didn't mention it here. That's a standard, 7-cup capacity metal dog dish they're eating out of, so you can kind of see how small they are!

Howdy hey - I have decided to sell my remaining Serama. I have a very pretty trio left if anyone is interested. "Caboose" the rooster, one laying hen and one pullet. All under a year old. $40 for all three. Give me a holler if you're interested.

It's time, again, for me to purchase a bag of Fertrell Poultry Nutribalancer. I mix my own feed and this is the mineral mix and it is rated for organic.

Problem...Right now my best shot to get it in a 60 lb bag which is enough for a ton (2000 lbs) of feed. So I will never go through all that before it is beyond shelf life.

If there is anyone in the Northern part of Indiana - or within driving distance - that may want to purchase some of my bag, send me a pm and I will give you price by the lb.

I am not trying to make money .... will sell at the same price per lb that I get it at. I just don't want it to go to waste and maybe someone wanted some and also doesn't want to have the whole large bag.
