INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have been reading everyone's ideas about keeping water from freezing. I also do not have electricity in my coop. Sometime next summer we are going to dig a trench and put in electricity but I have one more winter to go through. Last summer we had 23 chickens. I used the red and white waterers from TSC that hold a gallon or so. I have two of them. One stays in our tub in the house and one outside. In the morning the inside one goes out and the outside one comes back in to thaw. Then, in the evening we do it again. BUT, I have 4 kids so they have to take turns doing it. We need to go outside twice a day to collect eggs, check on things, and take care of rabbits anyway. The only really bad time was when the temp was WELL below zero and the drifts were a@@ deep and the wind was hurricane strength. Then it was only me and the oldest suiting up to do it. It sucks but right now it is the only choice I can think of. I wish there was a way to heat the water with solar or a battery. I just keep thinking if the chickens have to live out there in the cold the least I can do is visit twice a day and take of their needs. Right?

I don't know who that is but I just wanted to ask if you belong to the facebook group OUT IN THE BARN!!!!. If you are in Northern Indiana there are often people who post chickens for sale on there.

Sadly, I'm rarely outside of the Indy area. I know there's a lot more chicken/livestock activity in the more rural communities, and I'm willing to travel some. But there's only so much gas I can burn for chickens.

Also, as impatient as I feel, I'm prepared to wait until something turns up in my neighborhood. Lord willing, this guy with the Reds will be legit.

Maybe you could just check. I'm not sure how far south you are but I see people on the page that post from Muncie and that area. There is someone right now from Bluffton with chickens but that is probably too far North.

@Mother2Hens
I've moved on from the notion of chicks this year - I really just don't have time. I'm in search of pullets instead, so if you know anyone who's got a few, I'm interested!
That reminds me, does anyone know if there are going to be any more chicken swap meets this year, around the Indy or donut county area? I'm not sure where else to go for that kind of information.

@atrueb00 (Amy) has been working tirelessly on redesigning our Indiana Thread info.

Thank you, Amy!!!!
If you click on this link Indiana BYC'ers Members, Events, & Links (it's always at the end of my, jchny, bradselig, and atrueb00's posts), you'll find info about swaps, etc. "and much more!" Additionally, each week atrueb00/Amy posts upcoming events on the thread-- you probably saw her post on page 3500.

hoosier cheetah ~ Thanks for the update on your flock pecking order. I love to hear about chicken behavior-- so interesting! I thought Queen Penelope was a RIR, so I can understand how a RIR took over the top spot from her. I also can relate to your unusual chicken noises. My EE sounds an alert similar to a screechy, screaming banshee. My Jubilee Orp's clucks actually sound like goose honks. My BR, who is now the flock leader, makes a gurgling sound when she is annoyed by another hen trying to horn in on her bug digging space. My BLW has always made trumpet sounds. When combined, they make up a unique orchestra.
