INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well....I brought the pin cushion girl back in for the night as it's going into the 20s again. As a friend of mine said, "Birds have feathers for a purpose..." and she doesn't have any at this moment.

I think it will be a couple weeks before they totally unfurl.

Just came across this meme in one of my fb groups and it made me laugh so I thought I would share it here:

I had a sumatra hen squeeze out this morning. By the time I got out to catch her after making my children breakfast, she was just squeezing back in. I got lucky in 2 ways. I did not have to run after my chicken like a mad lady and I was able to block the exit. A latch had broken and the door to free range was about 3 inches open.
I hope your rooster comes back.

Our power went out tonight. It got me thinking. Anyone have recommendations for backup generators?

Saw that the other day. Thought it was pretty funny myself. I sent it to a few chickens friends lol

Thanks. I just any figure out where he got out, the pen is not perfect but none of the spots look big enough. I am glad you Sumatra snuck her way back in. It a good day when you don't have to chase a chicken around. Especially on a day like today. I really thought i would blow away if I stood in an open field

I have a silly question.

How do chickens know to eat oyster shell? Do they just want it when they need it? Are they attracted to dusty white things?
My hens have always went for it, same with the turkeys, ducks, guinea. I think their body tells them its yummy! My geese rarely want it, only when they lay... so its obviously a natural thing.

Hi all, hope everyone is staying dry! It looks like waterworld in my neck of the woods!

I had a rough Saturday, I went out to feed the chickens and found Harris in the pen beaten to a bloody pulp, both eyes pecked out. His "brother" that he had been raised with for the last 7 months was covered in Harris' blood. Harris was humanely euthanized and the other rooster now needs to go.

Does anyone want to process him? He is free to any BYCers, just know that he needs to be food. I don't want to risk him harming any other birds. I'd rather not advertise him on Craigslist as chicken aggressive since we all know the type of person that would want him. I just want him gone and soon!

I am just floored by the entire thing. Harris had always been top roo and there were no girls in the pen to fight over. They have been together since they were babies and it was just the two of them in there.

RIP Harris

Wow, terribly sorry to hear about your loss. I hope someone nearby can take that rooster.
So I just wanted to share a few pics this morning while I have time. Nursing school has really been kicking my behind, along with taking care of 3 teenagers and over 80 chickens I just haven't hardly had time to sit and do much. I have been keeping up with the posts, just haven't got to post much myself. I've tried to do a few hatches over the last month or so and my last one was just over the weekend, out of 23 eggs that went to lock down only 2 hatched, which was very disappointing, but I had tried something different and my humidity went up to over 80% the first day in lock down so I'm thinking maybe that was the problem. I set another 2 dozen yesterday and going to try something a bit different. I am using Styrofoam incubators for right now and when I try smaller hatches I almost have a 75 % hatch rate, it's when I try the larger hatches that I seem to run into problems. Over Christmas break my DH and I are going to build a cabinet incubator. If anyone has any suggestions about how to get started with that we would really appreciate it. We are planning on doing lots of hatches come spring and I would love to have a system that produced great results without having to spend hundreds of dollars to get started. Well anyway on with the picture show, hope you all enjoy!!!!
Remember to take time for you! We get caught up in a lot of pursuits, and sometimes forget about ourselves. Lots of lovely birds and adorable chicks

My best luck hatching is "dry incubation" humidity around 30% or less. I crank the humidity up at lockdown, 75% or higher if I can get there. I have learned not to hatch in the bator that younger eggs are still incubating in, it seems the humidity fluctuation is hard on the embryos.
There are a few members that have built and used cabinets, hopefully someone can chime in.
Quote: I hope to be free to help process next year! Sounds like I missed a great time. @SallyinIndiana I have the best luck with BB turkeys leaving them on high pro fermented until processing. I do take the food away 12 hrs a day after the 1st month. The heritage I don't need to remove the food, but they stay on 24%. Minimum 20% protein for short periods if I can't get the correct feed.

No fair....I want to live closer so I can come to a processing day

We just need to find someone to host it closer to you! Its a lil over an hour for me to get to sally and racins. The few times I have made processing dates it is always fun, good friends and lots of conversation.

(or Sonny). I keep flip flopping because it's comb and wattles are not quite as big and red as some of my other cochins this age, what does everyone think. I think she/he is going to be a golden laced it has some very pretty black markings on the wings.
Pullet!!!!

Apparently complaining works lol. My window cling thing came in the mail today.
its the only way to be heard!

Definitely looks like a cockerel to me. Looks like some shiny saddle feathers are coming in. Also looks more like a buff/red with a columbian type pattern.
