INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I had looked at those kennel heaters when I was going to have some chicks outside but it said that it didn't heat unless it detected the weight of the dog on it...I figured it wouldn't come on for a chicken or 2 due to them not being heavy enough.

Of course I see that you have a whole group on there, but my thought was that they could go to it to warm up if they needed to but they wouldn't even know it was there because it wasn't hot unless there was weight on it. (I was going "round and round" there...)

Anyhow, just curious if you can feel any heat on it if none of them are on it?

I can feel heat on it without the chickens on it. I read that also about the weight triggered heat.. It seems to work fine without weight.

I'm starting to re-think my mid-winter chick order.

They're scheduled to ship next week.

I'm re-thinking living in Indiana! After being stranded after hours with a broken wheel bearing on my truck I came home to frozen pipes and a frozen hydrant in the barn.....woke up to the same plus a frozen chicken waterer. WHY DOES ANYONE LIVE IN THE MIDWEST!?!?!?!?!?!?

Well I (technically) live in the east and it's down right freezing here!!! I have a couple friends and family in Oklahoma AND Texas and it's cold there too! Guess you'll have to move to the Bahamas! WAIT FOR ME!!!!lol

Florida would be awfully crowded if we all moved there! There are a lot of "snow birds" from our area that migrate to Florida every year for the winter -- they either rent or own a second home there. My aunt & uncle have been doing that for a number of years now and finally this year actually purchased a home there -- left the week before Christmas & won't be back until spring sometime. We should be glad we don't live in Minnesota. I heard the other night on the news (hope I have this accurate) that they don't call off school unless the wind chill goes below -45. Now that's a place I wouldn't want to live in!

(my apologies to anyone who hails from there!)

Got an age old question BYC peeps. Which rooster to choose for flock protection? Live in Northwestern Ky (southwest of Louisville), will have about 40 hens in the spring, an enclosed (not covered run), and about 1.5 acres of optional free range during the daylight hours. Okay go!

Mix of hens are all heavy breed layers. Buff Orps, Australorps, Americaunas, White wyandottes, Marans and legbars. Also one rescued Leghorn and Redstar!
