INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

LOL I hear ya, I dread weekends because I expect to find some new creature left in our yard overnight! Easter is really bad, I usually find adult cats dumped out here, occasionally dogs. Lots of misc poultry! I had around a dozen guinea left here last fall. Many of them stayed, I have just left them. The cats I rehome or they just don't thrive if I can catch them. So many are declawed, never even been outdoors (clean fur and soft pads) and just terrified. Some are also bird aggressive and that cannot happen here.

Oh my goodness it is windy!!!

Thought I would post a picture of what Wookie's beak looks like. I trimmed it a bit more. He is doing this thing where he opens his beak as if to yawn...but it makes a kinda grinding sound. How excellent would that be if he can straighten it himself. He is also able to close his beak now completely, he couldnt before and the inside of his beak looked really dry. If not, he is still a cute sweet guy! Sorry, its not the best picture.

Congrats everyone - after so many wonderful replies I now have no desire to get any chicks at TS! I will still go and make a game of it with DD - we go a couple times a month anyway. But with so many great options from all you great people why would I even consider TS!

It looks good! As long as he is eating well, corrective trimming may be the only thing he needs! Cross beak is also sometimes an incubation issue, so Its quite possible he is genetically fine. If you are in the market for more of those little fluffs balls, I have about 35 of them and am going to be thinning out the flock in the next couple of months. They are from show lines, so they are super fluffy! You did a very nice thing rescuing those silkies. :)

@pipdzipdnreadytogo Thank you! That makes me feel so much better. It was bad they have lost most of their combs I look at them and can't believe how bad they look. The leghorns combs are fine and theirs are big too!
Yeah, a lot of folks were saying that their Legbar boys are the only ones with frostbite. It has to be something to do with one of the lines or something. :/ I have a Leghorn with a super huge comb, too, and she's never had frostbite. It's amazing to me, she never has issues with the cold and everyone always says they aren't good with cold!
I agree they're all pretty. Dorkings are on my wish list. Of course that list is getting long..... I agree about buff orps looking bland. I personally like the Blues, Lavenders, & Blacks. Especially those big, extra fluffy, English Orps. How can we resist picking up our "Cuddles" when she looks at us like this? If you really want some eye candy, there are all kinds of fancy project colors of English Orpingtons. These beautiful pics below are not my own.

Oh, I forgot about Lavender! :love Okay, some solid colors are all right. I guess it's the buffs / reds and whites that just really put me off, not sure why. Black, if it has plenty of green sheen, can be lovely. I don't consider blue a solid color as much, because they're usually laced. The ones with the super dark lacing are amazing!

(Picture from Feathersite--I only wish I had a hen like this one!) Those Crele Orps are gorgeous, too. :drool My list keeps getting longer, as well...
I do love these colors, and the creole pattern many of these breeds carry. I have considered adding OE in LF in the creole color too. Just love the color in the adult birds.
Crele = wildtype plus barring. ;) Another gorgeous variant on wildtype. I've heard some are working on autosexing olive-eggers by crossing Crele Penedesenca males to Cream Legbar hens. Wonder how that'll turn out!
Wildtype partridge and its variants are probably my favorite colors in chickens. :love They're all so pretty! (P.S., Wildtype, wildtype plus red, wildtype plus silver ;) )
I've seen the Wildtype you show also called Gold Duckwing and the wildtype plus silver called silver duckwing. Does anyone know if this is also correct or not?
'Wildtype' and 'wildtype plus such-and-such' more describe the genetics. The color name really depends on the breed. For instance, in order, those pictures are of a Light Brown Leghorn, a Welsummer, and a Silver Gray Dorking. It just depends on what the original breeders decided sounded best when they entered the birds into the standard. So Gold Duckwing, which is often used in the game breeds like Gold Duckwing Old English Game bantams, in other breeds might be called Partridge, Light Brown, Black Breasted Red, etc., even though genetically it's the same color. So depending on the breed, yes, that is correct. :) Edited for wording... again... and a third time.

morning everyone .... I so would like to make it to the meet up....when is it again...any date been assigned
I think that we've tentatively settled on the fourth weekend in June (The weekend of the 27th), but it looks like there's some discussion going on about that at the Chickenfest thread, so I'd only call that tentative. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/909604/indiana-bycers-chickenfest-2015/120#post_14766407

We've got wind howling through our woods! It's quite the sound when there's no leaves on the trees! He looks a lot better already! That yawning motion is often just them trying to settle something in their crop. Keep up the good work! :)

:thumbsup Now if someone would dedicate some room to breeding Dorkings... If not, it'll just have to be me some years down the line. ;) Edited to clarify something.

On the Bieles, yes, I wanted them, but I hadn't figured I'd see any around, and the book we were looking in didn't have them listed. I love their coloring, and I'm a sucker for crele in general :D I prefer bigger birds to smaller ones because they're sturdier......... Our experience with banties so far is that they're aloof, love to escape and hard to catch.

I live in Indianapolis, but the only eggs I'm getting are from the ducks now. I have fertile eggs from my Pekin drakes over Pekin, Rouen and Black Swedish hens. They've laid really well all winter, but I've had a heat lamp on in the coop for the days it's well below freezing. Muscovy's the sweetest, but I don't think it's been laying (how old were those ducklings you gave me, Jchnny?). If anybody wants duck eggs, they're free, but I have no idea which ones are whose, so you're very likely to get a mix. Good news is that I've heard they're tasty as adults and know they lay huge, tasty eggs year round. If anyone wants adults ducks, I can part with all but two.

If I had a 'bator, I'd be trying to hatch silkies and bieles. They're gorgeous and sweet, and sweet's exactly what I'm going for. Regarding silkies, I like all colors, but feathered feet are going to get really dirty really fast (the ducks have killed all my grass!).
