Good luck on the build! Those chicks are too adorable. What is the other peafowl names, that helps to pick.

Well I started with an IB hen, Mrs Pea, then came Mr Pea the IB male, the two whites not knowing their sex have remained unnamed but pretty sure they are males, now with the addition of this lovely BS hen I would like to name them but I'm really not that good at it! Sigh..

Question: I have a Jubilee chick due to hatch today or tomorrow, but no other chicks due for another four days. (Why I did this is a whole other story for another day.) I know it is going to be pitifully lonely. I DO have a broody hen or two in my mixed layer flock. Can I bring my broody in to "mother" the chick after it hatches and keep it company? What are the odds of success? I sure don't want her to kill or injure it. If I hadn't wanted it to hatch, I would have pitched the egg when I realized how big the gap was.

Stories of success and/or failure are appreciated.

This bantam cochin was the only survivor of that hatch. I have since done this with others as well.

under "additional notes" at the bottom it says "These people are not necessarily being deceptive, rather uneducated about the breed." I'd like to believe this is true more than they are purposefully being deceptive.

I am a chicken novice, I have only had chickens for less that a year, yet I am continually floored by people who I think should know chickens, who have them, sell them and how little they actually know! Within 2 days of getting my chicks last year I knew that the store (not one of the big feed stores) had no clue what they were talking about. They told me that I had Rhode Island red chicks, "well actually golden comet but they are the same thing" Huh???? AND they said all 4 of my black chicks were barred rock - clearly 2 could not have been b/c of their markings. Okay, did not really matter to me, I just wanted chicks and I love them regardless of what they are!

You wonderful Indiana BYCers have educated me greatly. I wish I had found this sooner but it caused me to be more choosy this year. I do not need show quality birds. Yet I still I wish I could get all my chicks from Indiana breeders, and most will be. My only dilemma is that I have gotten nervous about getting all my chicks straight run. Depending on zoning laws I am getting 18-28 chicks this year. If zoning does not change, then the full number won't happen til next year. But that is a potential of half (or God forbid more!) of them being cockerels! So, the one chick I decided to bend on, and get from RK is the EEs. DD really wants some, they are the first chickens she fell in love with, and I find it it fascinating to not have a clue what they will look like and watch them grow up and feather out. I know chicken sexing is not a sure thing, but at least it gives me a better chance! I still may be rehoming some cockerels, with my full flock I'd like to have a couple. I miss our roo and his cock-a-doo (he left out the doodle).

On Mother's Day weekend there is a good swap at Milton KY (just across the river from Madison). You can find about anything there, just have to be careful about who you buy from. By walking through you can usually spot the decent breeders--birds clean, well fed, alert, not crowded in cages, etc. Generally can find some autosexed chicks or chicks old enough to sex. As always, quarantine (This is a recording.

HELP!!

So last night I noticed one of my hens was puffed up standing alone. She made it into the coop okay for the night though. Then about 11 last night I went out to check that everyone had a sleeping buddy and she was on the floor of the coop. I picked her up and put her on the roost and went inside. This morning she was on the floor again. She couldn't stand up for long without nearly falling over. She was trying to use her wings to balance herself. I brought her inside and gave her Nutri-drench and colloidal silver to perk her up. I also gave her an Epsom salt bath in case she was egg bound. I made up a scrambled egg and put some in her beak and she ate it. She is still inside, still isn't standing on her own but she is alert. I lifted her body up and she can stand on her legs, but her wings start to fall and she starts to lose balance. She seems very weak. She did drink some water when I dunked her beak in it. Any thoughts? Could she just have gotten too cold and needs time to regain her strength? I'm not thinking Mareks as she is a 2 year old hen who has been in my flock since she was a chick and no one in my flock has ever had it. Plus they have been in the barn for the most part since November. Also she hasn't pooped today. She may have emptied her crop this morning before I went out to the barn though.

I hope your girl is getting better! You have been given a lot of good advice.
It doesn't sound a whole lot like Marek's. While the lack of coordination can be a symptom, infected birds generally continue to eat until they're just too sick--just have trouble getting to the food. And while Marek's usually affects younger birds, symptoms can appear at any age. Also a bird can be a carrier and never develop symptoms.
This info is from a pathologist at the Purdue diagnostic lab; she was most helpful when I went through a spell of MD a few years ago.

@Mother2Hens I promised some pics of my momma to your Monday. The poppa is in there too but I didn't take pics of just him. They have been separated for breeding.

I won't be gathering from her until approx 3/23. I will likely be setting some of her eggs for the HAL..

Now my next and last bin I'll be buying eggs of are Russian Orlaff..just waiting for them to post. I'm hoping to be hatching for the HAL!

Why, Monday does look just like her mother! lol Thanks for sharing. I think that Friday and Sunday look like Cochins, too. And @jchny2000 said (and others have, too) that they're docile. Mine are pretty feisty. They love to run up to the food bowls right in front of the LF hens who are offended. lol They don't seem to care what the big hens think. They love to run up to us. I think part of it is age-- they're like eager puppies. LIttle Monday makes a screeching sound almost like a broody when she isn't happy. My DH says she sound like that screaming goat video that went viral. haha
Today's treat. I put salad stuff and kiwi in the chopper-upper gadget and added sunflower kernels. The hens said they would have preferred a warm entree.

Lol! Hey that video, well the sprint commercial anyway, is not a goat!! It's a sheep! Lol! I really have never found any of my bantam cochin to be docile amongst the flock. I have RIR, seviral Marans breeds, silkies, Egyptian Fayomi, SLW, EE, Black Australorp. .and quite a few other breeds, bantam and large fowl. I have had the cochin roos on deaths doorstop several times due to having the little man complex with the LF roos and got his but kicked..his sons did the same things and amongst each other, they never gave up or step down. I Always had to rescue them. Bloody mess sometimes flipped on their backs! Silly boys. The girls all have always held their ground with other hens. I have never seen them singled out or picked on. I've seen the cochin girls purposely pick on juveniles though. Now they aren't high on the pecking order but they always end up high on the roost at night. They are docile towards humans but I would never describe them as too docile for a flock of LF. I free range though and certain dynamics could be a lot different in a different scenario. Haha..didn't mean to go on a rant!! I just love them!

After some gathering and hatching I could probably have some for you end of April or sooner if you do. I'll PM you when that time comes. oops that would only be for the blacks/frizzled. The MF pattern are eggs I bought, still have to hatch those.

Update this morning. She is still laying down, but can now stand up on her own when she feels like it. She still cant stand for long periods, but she is getting stronger. She emptied her crop this morning and she is also eating and drinking on her own today. She didn't eat a lot, but she is motivated to try on her own. So impacted ond sour crop are out I believe. Also not respiratory. I'm going to worm her today with Valbazen and although I haven't seem mites or lice, I will treat her for that also. I'm not doing meds yet. Just electrolytes probiotics and colloidal silver. She had some garlic in it last night. Her stool was very runny, but she drank more than she ate yesterday. It also was normal color. Not the bright green of not eating I was expecting. It was on a puppy pad, which absorbed most of it so I couldnt really tell a lot from it. I'm going to give her an epsom salt bath today again in case she has an egg in there or parts of one. I gave her an olive oil enema and some orally last night. I think that helped a ton. I'm going to give her an epsom salt bath again today. I'm really hoping its not mareks or a broken egg in her.

Glad she's doing better today! I'm also glad to see there were lots of suggestions, as I was pretty stumped beyond what I was asking about. And apologies for disappearing last night--I usually have my phone on me and it buzzes when someone quotes or '@mentions' me, but I had left it in my room. :/

Also, I definitely agree on your previous post, this group is awesome for help and support!
