We had a local vet who liked our goats and bought his own buck from us and a doe out of our herd. (Kinda made me proud of or operation) anyway he tested my herd we also were all negative. We bought a young buck after paying for two breedings when we first got into them, It was no question we needed our own.

The breedings get expensive but the craigslist searches turned up some interesting stuff.

I was shopping in Shipshewana this past Friday and thought all the buggies lined up would make fun pics to share. I took these after I was shopping at that store -- E & S Sales. It started 2 expansions ago as a bulk food store and has grown considerably over the years. There's all sorts of grocery products, tons of different items in bulk, huge selections of cheeses (sold in small chunks and by the horns,too). I go about every 3 weeks in conjunction with my feed run to Honeyville Feed where I get my non-GMO feed. I believe @leahsmom gets her organic feed there too. When I was there they had run out of the chick starter that morning, but by the time I got there had already milled some more. Can't get much fresher than that!

I got the nubians for the milk so its good to hear you say they are great milkers. At the time I got the does I was not expecting to buy a buck but it became necessary as AI on a goat is difficult if she has not given birth. Then there were biosecurity concerns for renting a buck so we ended up buying a buck for about the cost of 1 year's AI for my 3 does. And I got the test results back all 4 of my goats are CAE negative.

One of our dark Brahma chickies died in the night. He'd had one of the worst cases of impacted vent I've ever seen, and while I've cleaned him out several times, I think it was more that he just didn't drink enough.

Aww I am sorry. I look at every one before I take them home, its a really hard thing to correct if its an advanced case.

So I've had a RIR mix girl from NonNN breeding a few years ago and I noticed her having a awful looking bottom. Found it to be a prolapse vent! This is a new one for me. I separated her got the meds Friday night and started treating her. She's been spending most of her day in a small box and I've had her in the bathtub here and there to treat and make sure she's drinking some vitamin water. What a yucky thing to deal with! Unfortunately she continued to lay 2 eggs which didn't help matters. I've withdrawn feed since Saturday and finally today she passed a bowel movement without it reoccurring! I really hope she gets through this! Here's some pics of her this morning. I didn't take any of her prolapse although I realize I should have as it may have been useful for others. It was a bloody nasty mess.

It's not the best pic but you can see it's not protruding out!

I've had to put her back together multiple times a day. I started with a soak in the tub, cleaning her up with baby wash. Using non latex gloves and lots of hemroid cream I've tried doing my best at helping her. After last night and her constantly prolapsing I really have been questioning her recovery. Only time will tell.

Hopeful for her recovery.

So sorry you are dealing with more with your mom. You have to take care of you. You may need to drastically downsize but I know that is not an easy decision to make. This is for your health and well-being and I know your family wants the best for you, they just don't understand the stress you are under and the adverse affects this could have on your health . Adorable kitten but my first thought was Argh - you don't need one more thing to deal with and then I read this post! Praying for you, and wisdom and your mom and her health. I am just letting things play out for now. Thanks for the well wishes. It helps to be able to sound off once in a while!

Forgot to tell everyone that I had stellar self control! Went to TSC saturday and did not buy any chicks!! My plan worked. I have carefully chosen what I want and deviating from that plan means I don't get what I want. They didn't have anything I wanted anyway. Lots of ducks, red sex-links and "pullets" - I have no idea what they are though and either did the few workers that were closing Sat. night. They were kinda brown/rust color with light striping down their backs and their wings were a little striped on the ones feathering out. This is a photo from my phone so the quality is not great, but if anyone knows what they are I was just curious. I was at the TS on the east side of Indy, Brookville road. The funny thing is I totally forgot to buy what I needed there. DD wanted to see the chicks and all that cuteness distracted me. Fortunately they are close!

Well again can't say enough good things about gqf! Received my replacement door and back panel today. Was surprised to open it ip to see they upgraded the door to the clear at no additional charge! Got it installed!

This is totally un-chicken related. But I wanted to post a couple pictures of the newest member of our inside zoo. The momma gave birth to 3 kittens outside our back door sometime this morning, but this is the only one that we could save. The other 2 were already gone by the time we found them. These pictures were taken about 9 this morning. I think that I am going to name it Spunky, cuz it sure has a lot of spunk

So cute! Looks like you might have a lil girl? Is it a calico?

Coop #2 cleaned out today! It was a awesome afternoon (besides the mud). Also found an amazing 6 month old Red Boer buckling to be my herd sire! He weighed #90 in Feb. Picking him up next Sunday! He is a monster all ready I think he will be a very large Buck.


Can you tell I'm excited about this 100% boer buckling! Lol

Gorgeous heavy fella! He will do well for you! Love that red color in the boers. We still talk about them, I have to get past the "pet" mindset on goats to be able to do it. I want a much better set up before I add another breed, too.

Evening, all! Looks like I got left behind in the past few days.

I'm on spring break right now, so naturally my niece brought home a nice cold for me to suffer with and not get anything done I had hoped.

Sore throat, dizzies, fever, general yuckiness. Hoping it's gone in a few days so I can get some work done outside on my week off! I have a list of springy things to do with coops and pens, and I want to get out there and get them done!


The girls are well. Haven't seen anything of Mr. Hawk since he flew into the window about 5 days ago.

Hoping he's moved on. The girls are getting antsy in their mini-yard, as evidenced by me having to chase one of them (not naming any names, but she's a crazy white-egger, so I don't expect much else) off the roof of the coop today. I think we're all looking forward to seeing the ground again! We've got some mud and rivers running through here and there, wherever there is visible ground, but I'll take it any day over freezing frigid cold and snowstorms.


My three winter refugees are looking pretty good, too. Cubby's back to eating pretty normally, and it looks like Louise might finally be improving. And, well, Frou-Frou's still being Frou-Frou.

I guess the good news about her is with the time change, she's no longer playing alarm clock.

They're keeping me busy, anyway, these three...


Anyway, I didn't do much more than skim the past few pages. Just wanted to say before I go, I love all the coop pictures and ideas.

Glad to hear the girls are doing well. Weather is improving here fast!

Sure! I have lots of seeds from this year I could share.  We have a small-ish garden, and always purchase more seeds than we can use.  For example, we like three varieties of eggplant, but we only grow 2 plants of each variety...so we end up with 75+ seeds when we only need 6.  The same holds true for tomatoes, squash, cabbage, etc.  Here are some heirloom seeds I'd be willing to share.

Speaking of, has anyone started seeds indoors yet?  I just got my soil and pots this weekend and am thinking of starting them this week. 

Also.....T-3 days to lockdown on my first batch of locally cooked Bielefelders!!!! I'm really hoping I don't mess this up!!!!!

Planted my starts today. I also put in WAY too many seeds. But am too far away to swap seedlings for sure. I'm going to sell them at the farmers market.
