INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@birdman55 Very cool! I hope someday I can talk my hubby into letting me get a peacock! :)

I have a question for everyone! I have sort of a dilemma, So I have this rooster named Rico. We didn't raise him but we got him when he was about 5 months old. He has ALWAYS been sooooooo sweet to my hens and chicks. He is very nice to us when we bring him in like when he had frost bite, he was in for a few weeks. Anyways, he is my first rooster ever so I have nothing to compare it to. But he just wont stop acting like he is going to charge us, or actually spurring my husband and I. Its not always...just if he thinks we are going to pick him up, or if we walk to fast around him. I just don't like that I feel like I have to watch my back all the time.

I hatched a rooster this last fall, and Big Roosty is about 7 months old. He is never mean to my husband or I. He is really super sweet. Problem is that he is not the most gentle when mounting the hens. He will mount them and continue to stand on their backs even after mounting them. Its like he doesn't realize he is standing on them. So maybe that is something that will go away? Rico didn't ever go after him, but now he is. Rico has spurs, big Roosty does not, yet but they are coming.

Should I try to remove Rico's spurs? Rehome Rico? Separate them? I just need some advice from some seasoned rooster owners? I really like Rico being sweet to my hens, and I like Big roosty because he is sweet to us, and most of the time to the hens. I dont think I could eat Rico, so this would need to be the last and very last option. Thank you in advance for any suggestions or advice!

First of all silkies can't see all that well and I've found the Roos act out even some hens because they get frightened easily because of that. That may be why. As for the new boy and him. How long have they been together? How long has he been challenging him? My guess would be he's just making his dominance known and wouldn't expect that it will get too bad. All roosters quarrel even hens will. It just gets bad if they both want to be Top Roo. The one being younger I'm guessing he gives up pretty easy or runs immediately anyway. I wouldn't worry too much until one gets pretty bloody and then can't be around each other because all they do is fight. Now if the young one is penned with him and there isn't enough room for escaping a beating then that's another problem in its self.

What would cause a hen to stand like a penguin but still be laying? She has been this way for 2 weeks. She started as egg bound for 3 days, after epsom baths and lubrication she laid the first egg. Shes been on Baytril for 10 days, LAst day was yesterday, per vet, she is also on prednisone. No clue whats wrong with her, thought internal laying after the initial egg binding, but now she is laying and still standing like a penguin. She will walk normally some of the time. She has lost a lot of weight. She eats, but not a lot. Shes talkative and full of energy. Peter Brown suggested possible nerve damage from the pressure of the egg on her spine (it was really in there). I think she may come out of it, but the weight loss is concerning me. I wormed her with valbazen 8 days ago. I have a sense of what is wrong, but I wanted to see if any of you had experienced this.

Can you feel anything in her abdomen like a mass? I have heard of birds with ovarian cysts or tumors exhibiting outward signs of internal laying. Sorry, that's all I can think of other than what you've already suggested... :/

@kittydoc I learned something new yesterday after some research in regards to your frizzle question. Apparently, along with the partially dominant frizzle gene (F), there is a recessive frizzle modifier (mf) that actually reduces the appearance of frizzle feathers and can make a heterozygous carrier of the frizzle gene (F/f+) look like a smooth feathered bird. So it is possible that one of your birds is a frizzle with the frizzle modifier (F/f+ mf/mf) and looks smooth as a result, which when crossed to regular smooth feathered birds without the modifier (f+/f+ Mf+/Mf+) would result in roughly half of the offspring being frizzle and split for the modifier (F/f+ Mf+/mf). However, I'm thinking it's more plausible, especially since there's just one believed-to-be frizzled chick, that there's some sort of mix up happening like mentioned before. Thought that was interesting enough to share, though! :D I'm always learning new things with this genetics stuff!

Nope no masses. I have palpated her internally and externally and nothing. Leaning toward nerve damage from being egg bound. I tried to call purdue, but no answer. I'll try again later.
Purdue will only talk to you with a referral. Poop.

Here's my silkie babies that hatched yesterday! They are sooo tiny! Correct toes comb and skin with what appear to be nice starts of top knots!

I want to get my incubator going so badly!

Funny story: On this beautiful sunny day, DD & her friend decided to open a cupcake & juice stand. The girls baked cupcakes & had the great idea of selling them on the corner to other kids after school. No lemonade at her friend’s house, so they made OJ instead. DD wanted to contribute, so she ran home & raided our fridge. She grabbed some eggs & sold them on the street – literally!!! In fact, our eggs were the 1st item to sell out. Now my daughter is a pusher & our neighbors are getting addicted to fresh eggs!

What breed is Rico? That would make a difference to me. I have learned through experience not to keep an aggressive rooster. If I have one, he goes elsewhere--either to my freezer or to someone who intends him for theirs. Selling or giving him to someone who plans to keep him just gives them your problem unless the person actually likes meanies.
So after saying that, I have a bantam cochin that I call WokWok--he attacks and then runs crying "WokWokWok." He isn't big enough to hurt anyone and doesn't go after me any more or after one of my sisters. He will go after another sister because.......she picks him up and holds him rather than running him off! His way of getting cuddled.

I'm just south of Lafayette and have a 2 week old chick that appears to have a slipped tendon. I've been trying, but can't seem to get it back in. Does anyone have good advice regarding slipped tendon? Does anyone around Lafayette have experience and could possibly help me get it fixed?
