INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'll be less active for a while, but wanted to ask people to pray for my family. My sis went to the ER gasping for air & then into ICU on Thurs. My dad (age 85) had to drop her off so he could get home to care for my mom - with pneumonia. He currently has bronchitis himself. Thurs night, my mom stopped breathing. She went to a different hospital by ambulance & is still in ICU & not responsive. The three live together & all caught something. Life is changing fast. We need prayers during this difficult time.

You have my prayers as well.

My kids boer wethers for 4H next to all our Nubian baby's, some ours some are sold (waiting for pick up). We got a new boer doe yesterday and picking another one up end of the week.

Looking at the pic now I see we are missing two of our nubian kids in the pic lol

Roosters break up a chicken fight. My hubbie found this on facebook and then searched for the video for me so I could post it here (I don't have a facebook account by choice!)

Smart roosters - after they break things up they wait and test thing out a little before walking away - making sure those rabbits know who's boss!

Lol, yeah there weren't many leaves in what I was raking. Mostly nuts and small to medium sticks. The big sticks I just picked up to move to the burn pit. Haven't really started on the limbs yet. Also, one of our big oaks got struck by lightning and some of it's bark was stripped. Does any one know if we should use a specific type of paint to cover the raw wood so the tree doesn't suffer until she can grow her bark back?

My sister is gifting me two white leghorns and a welsummer. They're 4 weeks old, and she says they're pretty well feathered-out. I'm going to put them in my brooder corner in the garage. Do you think they'll need heat, or are they old enough to do without?

I have to say @SallyinIndiana is right, watch them and give them heat at night at least until they settle in. With the move they will stress a bit, and being chilled may create problems.

I'm living on the ~50 acre fish hatchery I was raised on. We are pretty far out of city ordinances, in fact not only do we not live in town, we actually live in between two villages so the closest I have to a nightmare neighbor is my mom who lives just across the lake. :) Thank you for the links! I didn't think someone would do my research for me. I just thought I'd throw that out there in case someone just knew off the top of their heads. When my dad cuts branches he always spray paints the "wound" black but I can't catch him right now to see if it's a special paint or not. I will look into the tree wound stuff though. $11/per bucket isn't bad for a tree this special. Someone managed to get a picture of the lightning strike that hit my tree from a nearby town!

Hi, I wanted to give a brief intro on where I am in Indiana before going back out to rake some more and clean up fallen branches. I am about equidistant from Aurora, Greensburg, and Madison. I plan on getting back on here to learn more about you guys once working outside isn't useful anymore but feel free to message me or something.

Spring is here!!!!

But...with spring comes....POISON IVY!

I think my girls have already been brushing the vines even though there aren't any leaves yet. I moved one of my girls last night and this morning I'm having that tell-tail swelling in my face and around my eyes. I'm trying to be proactive to stop it before I get a full blown swollen head like I did last year.

It just didn't occur to me that I needed to be concerned about picking one of them up this early in the season.

You'd think that after NEVER HAVING A REACTION my whole life that I wouldn't start now. Ah well...

But I just reserved 2 Boer wethers to run in the wooded area this season. They'll be butchered before winter for meat, but I'm hoping they will tackle a lot of the PI in there. The girls are going to get to run more of the woods this year too as I have had a guy doing some ground clearing...lots and lots of fallen trees, logs, and I couldn't get in to walk through or find a bird if needed before. I'm pretty excited about that new range area!!!

Besides the goats, do any of you have any ideas for PI clearing of the huge vines that go up the trees?

Feels like I need a haz-mat team - or haz-mat suit or something. I wonder if there are professional PI removers for the huge vines?

You will be really pleased and surprised what the goats will do to it. Wave goodbye to the PI! Be sure to contain them, and keep them on grass hay or alfalfa a month before process to clean out any remaining oils from bad plants. Its healthier for them anyways, they love it.
On the big vines I cut them in WINTER close to the ground as I can mainly before you see any green sprout on them. Wait until its dried up to pull down. DH will use the tractor forks and literally pull it off the trees. We burn it depending on wind direction, so no one is breathing it in. We had a lot of large vines here when we started cleaning up the property. Most of it is finally gone. Can really relate, I was never allergic either until a few years ago. We sent a few months just pulling vines off the trees here, sometimes by hand if the tree was small.

Not much new here, still downsizing some. Will be wrapping up chicken hatching in 2 weeks. May still set my Modern Games but aside from them, hatching will end this year. Except my turkeys, won't be setting anymore eggs this season. With daughters getting married and my Moms health Its difficult finding time socializing the babies enough to be people friendly. nite guys!
