INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

He's blue
Thanks, that's what I thought, but his neck feathers look black. He is really pretty either way. His name is greybird, because he was gray as a chick and thats how I could tell him apart from the others and the name just stuck,

ok another question. Can you get a white chick from two blue parents, or will she end up being splash. I swear right now this chick looks all white.
I can't say that a white chick would never pop up with a blue breeding, however it would be a freak of nature type situation. Splash chicks do look pretty much as a white at young age. They typically will change with age.

Ahh! I'm finally really excited about a hatch! 2 of the double laced silver barnevelders are out! 3 more eggs left but haven't candled them since lockdown. Today is only day 21. In about another week the eggs from the second source are due to hatch! I've drooled over these birds since I first saw pictures of them. Ohh yea, also had red, buff, lavender barred, and partridge Cochins hatch along with them. I'm happy about those too ;)

ooooo! Congrats!

Thinking it's about time to put a sign in the front yard for eggs! Getting around 3 dozen a day and our customers (co workers & family) can only eat so many eggs a week lol.
Anybody have a custom sign you made or had someone make for you. Or any just standards (fresh eggs for sale) signs let's see them!!! I'll post mine as soon as we get one...

Great post! DH is planning to make one also. I would love to see others ideas as well!
I have a question. I am comparing my eggs to store bought eggs. When I crack my eggs the yolk doesn't stand up firm like store bought. I keep my eggs on the counter unwashed, but have started putting them in the fridge to see if that makes a difference. The yolk just kind of flattens out a bit. Can anyone give me any insight on why? Are they lacking something? Or is that the difference between fresh and store bought? Just wondering
Have a few thoughts on it, do you free range at all? If not, consider providing sprouts, mealworms or other fresh food sources. My yolks stand high and are almost bright orange, but my flocks free range daily. Adding fresh sources should help improve them, also shredded carrot, fresh pumpkin will brighten yolks and improve quality. Its a really healthful treat for them as well.

Quote: I need to learn how to get the pictures from my camera to the internet. We just got a new camera and its been a bit busy here this week.

I know how but either forget, or lose my phone lol. I do have a camera also. Just absent minded

Need help guys. What color is this little guy. I thought he was a blue or gray. But now I'm not sure.
I would think blue, hackles are too dark for lavender. ETA what a handsome fella!

oooOOOOoooo! Congrats! They are just stunning birds.

In case I fall asleep yet again trying to catch up I wanted to say thanks to @jchny2000 and @SallyinIndiana for their advice on bringing the babes inside. They came in. The two groups were shifted down a size for the time and stayed toasty and warm. When the older chicks went back out into their huge brooder outside I had dug out some of the good bottom compost and put it in with them. They went nuts!

I got egg #3 last night from my Peahen. They are for sure getting bigger!

For those out there with Banty Cochins, people say they use them as Broodies to set their Pea eggs...like 5 of them!!! Maybe my girls are especially small but I'm thinking No Way!! Lol!

I plan on setting the first 3 today as the oldest egg was layed Sunday. I'll post pics later.

Meantime on the home front I have some starts! Seems fast but it will be a week this weekend.
So far broccoli and cukes

And tomatoes that on a heating seed mat

Speaking of seedS. If anyone is interested I got some from a fellow BYC member in Texas. They are what we know as Lufa sponges which come from this plant. The name escapes me at the moment but she said her birds love the fruit/seeds from them. She sent a ton of them and they are a vining plant so you need to be careful where you plant them but I'm excited to atleast try them out.

I also have a ton of seeds for the
Cleome hassleriana
Common Names: spider plant

I love the flower and will plant all of them this weekend if no one else asks me to hold some.
