INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I don't know if anyone can get this large enough to read but thought I'd share it. For those that aren't able to read it well it seems the West Virginia Depr of Ag has just put a quash on poultry exhibits at our State Fairs this year. They say though there've not been any reports of outbreak in WV they want everyone to keep their birds home and are recommending that they not be free ranged in order that they not be exposed to wild birds of any kind.
I understand precautionary measures but to me (at this point in time) their precautions are a little extreme. Can you imagine all the 4Hers and FFA kids that are going to not only be disappointed but devastated that they put so much work into their project birds for nothing.

ETA: this article only mentions two fairs but the extension offices have sent letters to the fair boards recommending similar actions for the county fairs as well.
It can be heartbreaking. I poulled my boy from his first year of mini 4H. He is over it but then again he did not have a lot fully invested yet. FOr a child that might have won for year after year and it is their last year, I can see some devastation. Maybe a video entry could be offered up instead. If the fair board could be talked into it, it would be fun for fair attenders too.
I plan to take him to see 1 county fair but it is far enough away that we will stop for a sandwich or something on the way home and get all cleaned up miles from the house.

Not much new going one here. Awaiting Sugar to kid, she is HUGE. Her milk is coming in so its any day now. She was really minding the heat today, took her for a walk and we sat in the shade for a bit. She is such a good girl, loves to be pet and walks so well on a lead. Sophie's doeling is just too precious

She is learning to climb already. We put a boulder in the goat pen for them to jump on.
The broody bug has hit almost all my birds, ugh! No ones laying (except the Pekin, they lay in everyone else's nests), and they are all parked in nest boxes. The roosters and other male birds all look lost, just sitting around. My Embden gander (Big Boy) barely leaves the goose house, if he does the hens start honking, he runs back. Poor guy! I have one broody Chinese hen, the rest are still not sitting, but are either not laying or hiding eggs..Incubators getting empty already. Really hoping my turkeys resume laying soon, all the hens are trying to hatch air, lol! I will have guinea keets available soon, and have started setting quail eggs. Muscovy are almost all broody too, waiting for some hatches soon
Garden is going in, have my taters (red and gold) and onion sets in so far. Planting the corn and as many other veggies as I can this weekend. Good nite everyone!

So, had a first here today. I was moving chicks around and noticed a black orp had what appeared to be a prolapsed vent. After some investigating, it appeared she was constipated and straining very hard! Never had this issue before. After letting her soak in a warm bath and massaging her belly, she was able to get some of it out. Decided to give her a chicken enema lol. That really got things going. After putting her back in brooder, she just stayed huddled for a little bit. Finally she went over and started eating. I'll check her here in a bit but her vent looks much better already.
I had that happen to one of my ISA Browns soon as we took her out of tub her constipation problem went away as she relieved herself all over my wife's lap. She they went back to laying and being a happy chicken

I had a pretty decent day yesterday. I sold 4 lavender Orpington chicks and 2 black split chicks as well. I still have a few black split to lavender chicks left at very modest prices, so if you are interested please message me. Also, this group actually contains chicks that I'm keeping for myself really for the first time all season. Oh! I almost forgot that we moved all of the Bielefelders into the former Jubilee breeding pen yesterday and they are doing just fine, but they look so tiny compared to those English monsters that were in there before.

I have new babies. These guys are a total surprise. I thought that I had lost these 3 hens about 3 weeks ago. I didn't find them till last week. They were in 3 different sections of the soffit in the garage/converted into a barn/coop. Well I moved them and their eggs out into one of my small coops. But I honestly did not think any of the eggs were going to hatch. Well yesterday I checked on them and found these 2 little guys

The 3 hens in the top picture are co-mothering them and weren't very happy with me for messing with their babies. There are still 4 eggs out there, but I don't think any of them will hatch. I am going to leave them for at least one more day.

Hi guys and gals been awhile, hope ya'll are doing great. Work is slowing down a bit so going to try and be on more, really do miss this place..
Had some ups and downs since I was last on but we all have them.

I'm finally convincing my girls that they don't need to brood here, although my little Sebrights are being stubborn. They puff out like little tiny turkeys and give me the full range of angry noises whenever I take them out of their nests. They've been brooding invisible eggs, too. We got our garden going earlier this week. :yesss: Lots and lots and LOTS of tomatoes over here! My sister and I kind of went nuts picking out the tomatoes, but there were so many varieties. She got these rainbow ones and a heritage stripey kind, and I had to get Old Germans and these pink ones (I think they were called Pink Ladies or something like that?). And the basics, of course, cherries and big boys. We'll be up to our necks in tomatoes this summer, but at least the hens will be happy to take care of the extras.

Precious :love I guess they're well protected with 3 mommas!
Hi guys and gals been awhile, hope ya'll are doing great. Work is slowing down a bit so going to try and be on more, really do miss this place.. And today I was out feeding my bottle baby goats, when I heard this crying in the goat run. the Nanny was bought from Rockville auction in January, She was skinny and pretty bad off, I got her cause I felt so sorry for her, she came with another doe about 10 - 11 mths old. nothing was said about her being breed. as skinny as she was I wouldn't have believed it anyway.
Oh, poor thing! This makes me so sad to read, and yet happy at the same time that you rescued her. Ugh, stuff like this! :/ I think if I had shelter for other animals, I'd be way too tempted to rescue all of them! This is why I don't go to swaps anymore. I don't know what's with the blue text. When I click on it, it opens the picture from your post of the chick peeking out from under the broody. It quoted really weird, too. Odd.

I'm very surprised she made it through giving birth, even with the vets help.
I don't go to the auction much any more, any time I do I come home with what DH calls "Mom's charity cases " but I have been lucky and more has lived then died, A good thing!! but I am really out of room so I have been staying home. I need about 100 acers and a few million bucks to pay for it all and I would be in 7th heaven... lol critters everywhere

Got a question for anyone that can answer, I was given 2 Cornish x's by mistake, I wanted White Rocks, anyway they are getting so big and heavy that they can hardly walk, they take a few steps and lay down. 1 of them would rather just hitch a ride in my hand. Has anyone ever raised and kept these birds in good health till they died a old bird? If so how did ya do it?
I was told on the Cornish thread to give them to someone that will eat them, it would be better for them, but I would rather not. Will if I have to if it would be best for the bird. But at the same time I don't know anyone that is close that eats their own birds.
