Got a question for anyone that can answer, I was given 2 Cornish x's by mistake, I wanted White Rocks, anyway they are getting so big and heavy that they can hardly walk, they take a few steps and lay down. 1 of them would rather just hitch a ride in my hand. Has anyone ever raised and kept these birds in good health till they died a old bird? If so how did ya do it? I was told on the Cornish thread to give them to someone that will eat them, it would be better for them, but I would rather not. Will if I have to if it would be best for the bird. But at the same time I don't know anyone that is close that eats their own birds.

I think @jchny2000 has at least one that's a couple years old!

Aww yup. blood ring. I am so sorry. The other ones doing great! I believe in NO waste, so eggs like that go to our hogs. It will still give life and nourishment to them. It just depends on what uses you have for them.

Speaking of prolapse, I had a loss today of a beloved pet.
My turkey Puppy, who was a BBW has been having issues when laying this last month. We fixed her first prolapse, appeared to have healed. This afternoon, right in front of me, she had a severe prolapse and begun heavy bleeding. I had no option but to make a very hard choice, I will not stand by and watch any animal suffer and bleed to death. This was too way severe to have been corrected. Puppy was 2 on March 18th, RIP. Have to say I adored her, she will be missed very much by our family..

Y'all, I thought I was going to pass out when I checked my grades today! I got a 92 on my Biostatistics final and a whopping 100% on my German final!

I almost couldn't believe the German grade!



Also, I was bad.

But I couldn't wait and so I candled my little ducky eggs. Looks like 5 viable embryos and I think a blood ring. I'm not 100% sure on that last one as this is only about the third time I've incubated and the second time I've gone into it actually knowing somewhat what I'm doing. It definitely doesn't have the lovely, spiderweb veins like the other 5. It looks like a tiny blob with a 'U' shape kind of extending out of it. That one was the first one I candled, of course, so my heart sank immediately, but then I saw all the other little ducky babies and...

They're so beautiful.

Not much new going one here. Awaiting Sugar to kid, she is HUGE. Her milk is coming in so its any day now. She was really minding the heat today, took her for a walk and we sat in the shade for a bit. She is such a good girl, loves to be pet and walks so well on a lead. Sophie's doeling is just too precious

She is learning to climb already. We put a boulder in the goat pen for them to jump on.
The broody bug has hit almost all my birds, ugh! No ones laying (except the Pekin, they lay in everyone else's nests), and they are all parked in nest boxes. The roosters and other male birds all look lost, just sitting around. My Embden gander (Big Boy) barely leaves the goose house, if he does the hens start honking, he runs back. Poor guy! I have one broody Chinese hen, the rest are still not sitting, but are either not laying or hiding eggs..Incubators getting empty already. Really hoping my turkeys resume laying soon, all the hens are trying to hatch air, lol! I will have guinea keets available soon, and have started setting quail eggs. Muscovy are almost all broody too, waiting for some hatches soon
Garden is going in, have my taters (red and gold) and onion sets in so far. Planting the corn and as many other veggies as I can this weekend. Good nite everyone!

Yep, LilX lived to be almost 3. I lost her to prolapse, not weight. She did produce very nice large chickens also. Tank, the male CX made it about a year. Big rooster! They can live a good life if encouraged to free range from the start. Lay very large/jumbo eggs. But not knowing the age, hard to say if they will do well now. Treat them like a normal chicken, but with hold feed 12 hours a day. They are very sweet birds, unusual personality. I raised mine on FF and encouraged grazing all day. Thanks for that, if there is even a chance they can live pain free lives however long or short it may be then that's what I am going to let them do. they are allowed to free range every day right now cause they are in a 25 x 30' fenced area for chicks that have out grown the brooder but still to small to go out with the big girls. they are just a mth to 6 weeks old or around that. but when thy go out with the big-ins they will be free ranged every other day, I have so many different pens for so many different critters now that the chickens have to take turns. BYM's 1 day, special breeds the next ( thats what I call them... special ). So will that be good enough for them, I want to do right by them.

I wish we could make it but that is during our fair. I so enjoyed meeting everyone last year and having a whole day to talk chicken without people thinking I was off my rocker! It sounds like it will be wonderful and so much fun!

Sounds WONDERFUL!!!! Its an obvious no brainer that we need to keep live birds out of this years fest. Hopefully the AI will die off with our hot spring. I hope everyone takes a moment to RSVP so we can plan for enough food and fun for everyone attending! Huge thanks to @barb s

You can keep them alive longer by putting them on a diet. But I don't know anyone who has raised one over 2 or 3 years old. I raised a batch of meat chicken last year. I figured by the time it was time to butcher them they would be so gross, it wouldn't be that hard. Because everyone always talk about how terrible and disgusting they got as they went on. With breaking legs and barely walking. Mine were nothing like that. Tey would fly and run around. I used to feed them bread and I have never seen a meat chicken run so fast. I had this one she was too sweet. I wanted to keep her but finally decided the day that I was to sell them to someone to butcher (I didn't want to eat them myself), that it would be best for her to be butchered. Just give them the best life you can until it is time to be butchered

I'm very surprised she made it through giving birth, even with the vets help.
 I don't go to the auction much any more, any time I do I come home with what DH calls "Mom's charity cases " but I have been lucky and more has lived then died, A good thing!!  but I am really out of room so I have been staying home.  I need about 100 acers and a few million bucks to pay for it all and I would be in 7th heaven... lol critters everywhere 

Time to start buying lottery tickets! Kab ought to get in on it, too. Didn't she get all pullets from straight run TSC chicks last year? We need that kind of luck. And don't get me started on Birdman's money trees.

Aww, okay. Poor baby! I'll have my hands full, anyway, if the other 5 all make it to hatch. Lots of baby duckies! Hopefully lots of GIRL baby duckies, 'cause I don't think their daddy would be very happy with any kind of competition!

So sorry for your loss. Sounds like you made the right choice for her if this was an ongoing problem.
