I suppose if people had an issue with what I wrote the right thing to do would have been to come to me privately about it. I'm going to remove myself from this thread. I have several friends on here that I value, but voicing an opinion is apparently not allowed without issues now. I'll do what I need to do for my birds . I dont expect everyone to do the same. But I also dont want my flock sick because of anothers flock. Sorry if I upset people. Stay safe everyone.
Something else I need to say, I'm having some pretty serious health issues and may be needing to change my plans to attend Chickenfest this year. Now the problem, I was going to be doing the decorations and food. If there is someone willing to help Barb with these projects I'll send the things I have to you, and you can go from there. I'll explain what I was going to use the items for and help in anyway I can from a distance and possibly from a hospital bed. Please forgive my pulling out at this late time but if I continue the way I've been for the last few month I will be permanently in a wheel chair soon. Thank you for you help, patience and understanding.
OuchI'm so heartbroken right now. My incubator wigged out and cooked 50 eggs that were supposed to go into lockdown on Sunday. They included a bunch of Bielie eggs I was hatching for myself, some Marans from EllyMayrans and my silkied lavender ameraucaua eggs that I had shipped in.This was the first hatch of the year for myself. Now I don't trust my incubator. Anyone close by interested in setting some eggs for me once I re-group? I guess I need to figure out a better incubator situation for next year.![]()
Well said. I was not singling out anyone, there was a flurry of messages to me, and I wanted to remind everyone what our thread is about and why we started it. Support, friendship, respect and learning from each other. I respect every one of you very much. The issue isn't that folks are sharing their opinions. The issue is that folks are condemning other folks for their opinions and with their opinions.
It's a good thing to hear from all sides. I hope that everyone keeps sharing their thoughts.
Some old fashioned respectful sharing is just good manners. Statements like, "This is what I'm thinking now..." Or "I have some questions that I'm wondering about....." are good. And when other folks think something different, it's not a personal attack...they've just decided to do things differently. And that's okay.
So...
Let's keep sharing what we think, and feel, and are doing! And lets share in a manner that respects other's ability and freedom to think things through and make decisions for themselves - even if it isn't the same thing we'd do. That will make for good conversation and respectful friendships.![]()
Quote: We have a mixed situation here too. I have oddball birds that were abandoned here and just turned up. Also given up or rehomed birds.. That's the wild free range flock. I have confined breeding birds, those are my Lavender Orpington, EE and Modern Game Bantam. My Bourbon Red Turkeys are fully confined, the Midget whites free range. Muscovies are free ranged unless being bred, same for the Pekins, Chinese and Embden Geese. I have yet another coop for my older birds I still keep but are not productive anymore. The only 100% free ranged birds are the strays, everyone else is locked up at night.

Agreed, good post. (out of ovations!)I have been trying to read all of the posts about the recent events with AI. I guess I did not see any of them as offensive or attacking. I was glad to hear others' opinions. I was feeling that my only choice was to find a way to lock up my chickens for the duration. Now I know that I have some things to think about. I was glad to hear that other people have thought this through and made a decision. What my decision is, I am not sure yet. I love my birds and want to protect them. My husband says that a chicken has a right to be a chicken and if they can't be a chicken then their life isn't worth living. I know my chickens are spoiled compared to how factory chickens are treated. This is a sad day for all of us and our chickens. I just hope that we do not start to blame each other for this. It is not the chicken owner's fault that their birds contracted this horrible disease. Just like you can't blame a parent because their child has a disease. I think we each have to do what feels right to us.

Waiting to receive them, my Mennonite friend with hatch in her incubator at reasonable cost per live bird.. Hoping they arrive safely and hoping for good hatch rate with a lot of pullets.
