INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I had my first hatch of turkeys without a chick tutor, not doing that again! These 2 babies are just not catching on to the food. I tap the food, they bite my fingernail. tried dipping my finger in water, then stuck food to my finger, it worked! one of them was so hungry, he was holding on with his beak! They are drinking just fine. Any ideas guys, this has me a bit stumped. Otherwise very robust little poults and just adorable.
.

Try using a turkey "puppet" instead of your fingers. Anytime you put your hand in their enclosure.

Maybe call the vet about the doe, ask for ideas. Thats surprising, mine gobble alfalfa like its candy!
The burning trash would worry me, I think I would call the county and talk to them. If the odor is strong and burning your eyes, yikes, what he is burning may not be LEGAL to burn, and is supposed to be properly disposed of..for that reason.
burning period is not legal outside of a burn ring and must be 100' away from any structure. So that alone would get him in trouble. DH came home early and he took care of it. but we still had to put up with the smoke. I told DH I would call the law next time, we don't like causing trouble with our neighbors, but enough is enough, I went ahead and brought my silkies in to get them out of the smoke. As for the hay thing she must have changed her mind about not liking it cause when I got home from work it was gone.

My chicks came in today. Thou, now i'm a bit scared with all the Al talk. I got the form the same place i got my chickens i have now. Thou, i'm a bit worred about them too. i haven't lost any but, my brahma's have very slight run nose. You have to look really really close to see it. The other chickens with them don't have any thing. Plus, they have not layed any eggs but, there is feathers all over the place. I'm think weird weather and molting. thing that scares me is we do have geese land in the corn field behind our yard. we haven't Seen any this year and our neighbors usally hunt them. Our run is inclosed on the side that are near the corn field. The run also has a roof.Plus, they do not run the hole yard cuz barn cats and neighbors dogs. Anywho chick pics

I suppose if people had an issue with what I wrote the right thing to do would have been to come to me privately about it. I'm going to remove myself from this thread. I have several friends on here that I value, but voicing an opinion is apparently not allowed without issues now. I'll do what I need to do for my birds . I dont expect everyone to do the same. But I also dont want my flock sick because of anothers flock. Sorry if I upset people. Stay safe everyone.
I don't know you well, but your op's and knowledge has always been welcomed to me even if I disagreed or was just plain not able to do. You and others here gives us all a different outlook on different things. We need that, it allows us all to do the very best we can and keeps us informed on different ways of doing things. Just my op but I thing it would be a mistake for you to leave the thread, but of course it is your choice. I for one will miss you.
I may have said all that wrong but I hope you know what I meant, sometimes what I'm thinking don't match what I say... lol

I free range. Right now it is roosters but all of my chickens once outside get fresh air and once as large as a softball they get net covered runs if not free ranging. Once outside my birds typically like the outside and this time of year I like them out ad entertaining me too. I did have one set of roosters that had to be nudged out of the garage this Sunday as they were trying to roost on the lawn mower instead of the roosting bars in the free range coop. Of course there is nothing to stop them from going into the garage during the day but at night they all get put into the rooster coop only to be let out the next morning.
I get a great benefit from watching my birds, goats, and cats just living their lives in the wonderful outdoors. Then I get the benefit of rooster meat too. clearly it would be devastation to lose all of them but to lock them up even tighter than I do in winter would be just as bad for me and maybe worse for them. Other problem can arise when the birds are locked in a coop 24/7. lots of overheating and humidity and bug issues.

Just my opinions but I will keep free ranging and using net covered runs. I'd prefer changing the laws that allow so many wild birds to keep migrating over keeping everything locked up.

The kid advice I was given when I asked for some right before the does delivered was to give the mom and the baby BoSe (from a vet) and vitamins E (from Walmart) and Vit B shots (from TSC) If your goat had been underfed most likely she did not get a mineral block either. So BO-SE and a couple copper pills along with some vitamins would be my very unprofessional recommendation. Then I would also spray her down with a bug spray or a flea and lice product like frontline. Anything that could be taking from her right now could be an extra strain she just does not need. Possibly even supplement the kid with another goat's milk or even the kid formula. I've hear that whole milk with baking soda added can replace a bottle or two a day for a kid but not an entire day's supply. So maybe let the mom spend a few hours here and there away from the kid and see how she does.
the doe has been under vet care since I got her, the B and E and copper has been given to her and I will call and ask about BoSe. I am using 7 dust on her cause she has mites, well had, don't any more, then every time I give fresh bedding they all get it again just because the straw has mites in it. I used to use pine shavings but they kick it out of their sleeping areas, I don't think they like it. And I always put a layer of dust under the straw.

My suggestion would be to add some honey to the alfalfa. It's sweet so she'd probably WANT to eat it. Then there's the natural antibiotic and pro/pre biotic properties in it as well. It's natural so not a problem for her to gobble it up. Plus because it's sweet it seems more like a treat so maybe she'll eat it better.
never thought of honey, that's a good ideal. will try that next time.

I'm so heartbroken right now. My incubator wigged out and cooked 50 eggs that were supposed to go into lockdown on Sunday. They included a bunch of Bielie eggs I was hatching for myself, some Marans from EllyMayrans and my silkied lavender ameraucaua eggs that I had shipped in.

This was the first hatch of the year for myself. Now I don't trust my incubator. Anyone close by interested in setting some eggs for me once I re-group? I guess I need to figure out a better incubator situation for next year.
Wow thats terrible. I'm sorry

Don't feel like you are the only one in your position. I'm in a very similar situation. My birds free range everyday just like yours. Even if I had the funds I wouldn't "coop" them up as some choose to do. I got my birds for many different reasons and the top reason is I like to watch my birds and like I have said before "if I had to coop them up I wouldn't have them". I don't think anyone on here is ignorant to what is going on. I do believe we all joined this group to learn and share info. This does not mean I'm right or wrong in the way I do things. If you choose to free range or pen that's your choice and you shouldn't push the issue. I'm afraid that even with the best security we can do is not going to be good enough!! I mean let's be realistic if a multi million dollar operation can not control the spread in their system how our we supposed to?? It's a bigger issue than why/how we raise our birds the way we do. I hope and pray that it doesn't get any worse for anyone, but I think it's out of our hands. Let's just get back to sharing story's and pics of our joys in a covered run, cage, or in the yard doesn't matter to me I just like chickens!!! (And turkeys, cows, ducks, pigs, dogs, cats, horses, and I'll even throw in alpacas)
You forgot Goats!! You cant forget the Goaties......

I think my dinner was pretty good.

I feel like salisbury steak was a wise choice.

I'm not doing much now, aside from digesting.

I hope I haven't offended anyone with my microwave dinner methodology.
Was it a Hungry Man dinner???

So sorry about the cooked eggs. Wish we lived a little closer. I know a 10 yr old who loves to hatch eggs!

BTW- Here are a few of your Bieles with their mama hen. (The incubator group is still in the garage with a lamp.) They turned 1 month old today.
Adorable chickies

I had a very bad day yesterday, started with the fire next door, had to bring in my silkies cause they ere just to close in my op. got laid off work, that really bites!! Came home to find Lacy ( my SLW ) dead for no apparent reason RIP my beautiful girl and had to rush my Max, ( Baby goat ) to the vet for bloat. he didn't make the trip RIP my handsome little man. I will miss both of them very badly.
The vet showed me what to do the next time one of the goats bloat that bad ( I have only had this happen 1 time before and I got it fixed, but I caught it quick ) Just wish I would have known how to do it sooner, could have saved my little man.
Need to find a way to get rid of clover in my pasture. Vet says that can cause bloat, that or maybe the pine tree bark I caught him eating.

I get up this morning with news that my Aunt ( that I am close to ) may have Cancer. Lord please don't give me any more, I just don't think I can deal with it.
I think someone put a curse on me. Things were finely going great, should have known it was too good to last.

I placed another order for 25 CX and I'm going to try 10 freedom rangers... I'm anxious to see how they do. So on top of my CX I'll have freedoms, and the bator full of bresse eggs!! On a good note I haven't bought any layers for awhile doesn't that count for something?? Unless Brad comes through with those BLRW chicks

I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles yesterday. It seems when bad things happen it comes all at once. I will be thinking of you and hoping things start to look up. Especially with the possible cancer diagnosis. I have been through it and it is always difficult. Sorry about your babies. With the joy we find in these animals there is also heartbreak.

Anyone have turkey or guinea eggs? I'm thinking of trying turkeys. After seeing janets midget whites, I'm loving that size but would consider other heritage breeds (I like royal palms and bourbons as well). For guineas any color is fine. If any hatch I will likely keep the hens and sell the cocks. Definitely wasn't a fan of the males when I had them last time and the hens seemed to stay around and not adventure as much.

I have hatching eggs ordered! :weee

OOOooooOOOO congrats! what did you get?

Drumroll......

I got gold brabanters, mottled Houdans, and lastly, not quite set up just yet, some CLs not many of the CLs.

Waiting to receive them, my Mennonite friend with hatch in her incubator at reasonable cost per live bird.. Hoping they arrive safely and hoping for good hatch rate with a lot of pullets.

About to bust, so excited!

:celebrate :ya :yiipchick :jumpy :weee :celebrate

WOW thats an exciting assortment! :fl sending hatching vibes to you!

Thanks!

I need to candle some eggs tomorrow or later today. If they are good, I'll be setting my last batch of eggs on the 16th. I'm sure I'd have room after that. I'd be willing to trade the service for a discount on the chicks I have on the wait list. Still I'm not that close. Racin.. also offers an incubation service. I think his incubator might be a bit more reliable than mine in that his has no children looking at it, trying their best not to open the door. So far the children have only messed with the door once this season but I have had power issues a couple of times.

Quote: I need a new microwave. My youngest boy discovered the express cook button and tried to reheat his own peanut butter crackers. I've never served crackers hot but I guess he just wanted to try it. PB stained the inside of the microwave walls My poor boy was in tears as he lost his food. He cried more over the food than when he got a splinter from pretending to roast a hot dog on Tuesday.

So sorry about the fire. We can have fires in our area and it is very helpful to us. Most of our brooder boxes are cardboard and it burns well enough. Then amazingly we have lots of kitchen trash that gets burned too. And unknow to my children some of the crafty things they make don't get saved. Lets see other stuff we have burned includes old clothes that were beyond donation quality and of course a bunch of construction demolition. There was a smell with the construction stuff and the neighbors called the fire department ONCE. they came out and spent a bunch of time chatting it up with my DH. Then after about 2 hours of having a good time talking with my DH and leaving their trucks on for the neighbor's benefit they left. The fire was still going but the neighbors must have thought DH got in trouble. They came over the next day to see if all was well as they had noticed the fire trucks. Funny how they did not notice that nothing came off the trucks not one hose was used. No water spraying, my children would have been all about that.

Sorry about the loss of the animals. Pets are hard to lose. Hard enough now that when I sell kid goats my children get a small bit to keep. And they get "paid" to help catch the chickens we sell. Somehow that helps but to just lose a pet is rough. If you are wanting a replacement kid, I should have one come early June. I'm not sure about a SLW though. I have a couple wyndottes that are clearly not blue but they are too young to sort by gender right now.

My goats eat clover all of the time. It is a change in diet that can cause the bloat. IF you want a second vets opinion try Stephanie M. Wilton.

Family illness ~ no good new there. Hope might be there but not really good news. Once you get over the shock, I'm thinking the best things are helping that person get their daily chores done such as grocery shopping or house cleaning. Maybe driving her to appointments without asking one thing about a health update. I've had a few children and other than close family no one has come over and said take the afternoon off while I load the dishes, laundry and clean the bathroom. Sure the meals come and I'm grateful for the food. But to get the clean up done would be amazing. Then of course cancer will mean financial stress too so maybe if possible paying one of the smaller bills for a few months.
