INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Do MW's breed and go broody vet often? Our BBB's are awesome turkeys and would like to try the MW's! We had our first Tom trying to strut yesterday, funniest thing ever!
Oh my... worse than my Bourbons! My 2 girls are flat parked on golf balls, and are not giving them up! Love the MW breed.

Quote: And happy anniversary to you too! Ours is actually the 28th but it was memorial weekend..so thats when we celebrate it.

Been super busy around here so haven't been on for a while. At first I thought I'd try to catch up, but then settled on just the last few pages. So congratulations, condolences, good wishes, and welcomes to anyone who has needed or deserved them!

I had thought about going to the Southern Ohio show this weekend, but they sent back my entry saying Indiana people weren't welcome this time (because of the AI incident in Whitley county). I had been debating whether I wanted to take my birds around others anyhow until the AI dies down (hopefully it will, and soon!).

So this segues to the next topic: I had a vet from the BOAH test my flock today. Within the last week 3 birds died and another is down but still breathing, so I panicked and called them. The samples won't be tested until Tuesday, but he didn't think it looked like AI but more like a coincidence that it all happened within a few days. So I'm quarantined until he gets back to me, which is okay--didn't plan on going anywhere around birds anyhow. I'm not going to bite my nails until then--nothing I can do about it in any case so may as well go about business as usual.

Fingers crossed for good news

Does anyone have any narragansett turkeys? I could maybe buy reasonable or eggs?
If you dont find any, we can go in on a welp order.

Trapped a skunk out by my coop last night. Now it STINKS back there! I think it was to blame for my chick disappearances. Would a skunk eat a chick whole, feathers and all? Anyone got a good way to get rid of the smell?

I have been sprayed.. not pleasant. I used lemon lysol and got the smell out of the clothes.
A skunk will eat your chickens and eggs too.

We are needing to sell some Muscovy ducks. They need to go soon!
Anyone in the northern part of the state looking to add Muscovy ducks to there barnyard?

Other news here.........Out of a dozen turkey eggs, I believe only two are viable. Day 28 is the end of this week.
The two dozen set two weeks ago seem to look much, much better.
Of course, this all depends upon my knowing what I am looking at when candling. I've never really done that much as I just hatched chicken eggs and did now how to do it.
But, with the turkey eggs this Spring, I decided to try to learn how to candle. The internet and all the information and great pics is an amazing tool.

And, once again it's time to thin out the layers. The laying hens seem to multiply in that coop - crazy how they do that.lol

Not northern, east central but I keep them. Lavender, chocolate and black. Pied and barred.

I lost two more of my momma broodys chicks last night. Apparently my skunk wasn't the culprit. WHAT is in my coop?!?!

Yikes, I am so sorry! Is there feathers, any body parts... I know its upsetting to discuss but will help determine the predator.
Anyone else's roosters fighting this weekend? I'm thinking the weather maybe. These boys have lived together for over a year. Not sure what's up with them.
Mine are too. Think its because breeding season is full on and the boys are being pretty "randy ready"

I'm still having no luck finding any heritage breed turkeys!!!

Have had ads on Craigslist and Facebook groups posted for a month and nothing. Can't even find anyone interested in splitting an order from a hatchery. I don't even need people interested in turkeys as most hatcheries will mix with chicks. But no interest. Ack!!!!

Lets see if we can get something worked out for you. Send me a PM (personal message) of you actual town. I will try and get something set up.

Poor chicks. This is so frustrating. Have you set any traps outside of the coop?

Not only the roosters, but the drakes are at it, too. Must be the season.

I just went out to let my chickens out to run around. For some weird reason i went and looked in the nesting boxs, not like I've seen anything in there for weeks. There they were 2 brown eggs:weee yes, thats right I'm going to go make some cookies right now!!!! Hehe thats cuz i have no clean egg carton
Cookies sound like a great way to use those eggs.

Wish I could help you out, but we are not having much luck with hatching turkey eggs. We think we finally have it figured out and expect the next setting to be a success.
We are in northern IN and when we begin looking for turkeys we found there weren't many folks that sell turkeys. Good luck

Thankfully, we sold some of our muscovy ducks yesterday leaving a more manageable number. Well, at least until the four hens that are setting hatch their eggs.

P31mama : we could get you some hatching eggs sometime (iowa blue , EE , Chantecler , & mixes) as we get down to Angola a couple times a year to the Rural King , if that hopefully wouldnt be too far for you

That sounds interesting. I'd love to find someone a little more local so I can get some anytime, but if I can't Then that would work.what is the price of your hatching eggs? And if you aren't coming down when I need them would you be willing to ship them?

to me it looks like the white one looks like a white leghorn and the brown look like golded comets. l'm not sure about the dark brown.

Thanks, I know the pictures aren't great, I was taking them through the hardware cloth on the window. I'll have to get some better pictures soon.

Congrats on your chickens! It is a good idea to gradually expand their territory so they know where home is. But they should be fine in your run and coop. It is supposed to get pretty hot here this week so if it is up there too then it may be too hot to keep them in the coop.

I think Leghorn is the best guess for a white chicken laying white eggs.

I am raising my three turkeys with my chicks and they will be together most of their lives. Once they get bigger they will have a separate sleeping area. They are only 6:weeks old now.

The disease chickens carry that makes turkeys really sick is blackhead. Before I got my turkeys I talked to the vet who is a turkey expert at the state Board of Animal Health (BOAH) and found out there have been no known cases of blackhead in my county for years. So before you get turkeys find out about blackhead in your area. I called our 4h extension, they gave me the number for the BOAH and they Gave me the turkey expert - not sure if it is the same guy for the whole state.

If it is too hot to keep them in the coop what should we do? I don't want them to run away or not find their way back home. And they are not used to us yet so they are not easy to catch even in the coop. I'm not sure if we could catch them outside.

Is the reason the chickens and turkeys will sleep in separate areas because you don't have room or is it bad for them to sleep together? We only have one coop and it is plenty big (7.5' by 11.5') so we would love to house all of our birds together. We have considered turning half of our garage into a coop for meat birds / possible winter coop, but we are not sure on that yet.

Thanks for the information about blackhead, I will definitely call before I get any.

This is a random idea, but could you go spread a bunch of flour all over to see if you can get a footprint from the varmint? I wonder if it is something small like a rat/mink/weasel? That would maybe explain why it is going for the small/easy prey and not the larger birds yet. Another idea would be to borrow a trail camera and set it up in the coop until you get a picture of it.

I'm so sorry

There is NOTHING! left of them. Whatever it is hasn't bothered my big birds just the chicks. I've lost 5 babies, a 6 week old and have an injured 8 week old. :(
