I have ducklings popping up everywhere! all but 2 of my muscovy hens are on eggs. I put pekin eggs with my favorite hen, Huey. She is the best mother duck I have, and very protective of her babies. Also the "top hen" out of all 8.

I love craashie's update pics.

on a other note the Kankakee river is getting pretty high over here. Thou, the ditch in our front yard is not that high. the yard feels like a big sponge. Thank goodness the chickens run is on a little higher ground. It's a hot wet mess at my place. I told my brahmas need to change out of their snow shoe and put on rain boats and one of my americanas thought that was too funny. Lol

I thought we had it bad down here with heat and humidity, but I didn't realize that the rest of the state had so much rain!
I think that Tropical Storm Bill is hitting our area Friday.

I don't know why, but it took me three years to finally send a form in to the Indiana State Poultry Association for their Free Egg Testing service. I think that @bradselig originally was the one who urged people to take advantage of this service, and many of our on-the-ball members have participated. Here's the link for more info.
FREE flock health screening - Indiana State Poultry ...
This arrived today. Here's what you'll receive: a postage-paid shipping box, packing material for wrapping eggs, registration, and other helpful information.

I had some of those annoying Rainbow Loom rubber bands laying around. They worked great for sorting chicks. I had so many colors, that I was able to track each egg individually. I knew the breed & the particular hen for each baby chick hatched.
Awww…are those Cochin chicks?
Are every roosters tail up and tail feathers pointed:/
@Chickens chicks If you're wondering if your chicks are roos, you can post photos for members to guess.

My new brooder setup, 10 ft by 6 ft pool, 18 inches tall for $30! Lots of growing room for the new kids! I figure I can de-flate it when I don't have chicks. It was hilarious watching them dash around their new digs yesterday! They are enjoying all the space and are just figuring out the whole running thing!

Love the idea--just need a large enough area for it.

I need some help PLEASE!!!!
I want to deworm my flock, I have over 50 birds, so doing each one individually is not something I can do. I bought ivermectin pour on and I also bought safe guard for dogs( this is a packet of stuff that you can dissolve in water). My question is which one is better and at what dose do I give. the dog stuff says it has 4g per packet or 4000mg. I was thinking of dissolving one packet in the water. I have almost 30 birds in the one area, would this be enough or not enough. I just don't want to kill them, I already lost over 20 chickens last week to a horrible 2 day attack from coons, I cant handle loosing anymore. I just need to know dosages please.
If you want to use ivermectin in the drinking water, go to peafowl.org or hopkinslivestock.com. It's the same article in either place. The amounts are for peafowl, but figure that they run around 10-12 pounds and adjust from there. Much easier than individual treatment.

Hum didn't think about wing bands. Is it hard to do?
Actually pretty easy. I would wait until they start to feather out, though. I band peachicks when they hatch (sometimes miss a few if they're momma raised--she always objects) but they are larger.

TONS of rain but the outdoor kennel runs are perfect with the wood chipped deep litter. Love it for so many reasons - and 1 is NO MUD/unhealthy breeding ground for disease. I love the healthy environment when they have to be penned.
I've been scouting for the wood chips--so far no luck. Maybe the area tree services will get more active in the next few weeks. You have sold me on the idea.

Thought I would share this here, too.

And just because, a small selection of Crashie duck pictures from today and yesterday:

I'm not usually a duck person, but love the Crashie pictures. The first one is my favorite--you can almost see the happy smile. I downloaded it so that I can look at it occasionally.

If you're looking for more Pekins, I have one laying hen, two drakes and three babies. the hen has periodically eyeballed the Swedish's nest (they're great pals) but has never actually gone broody herself. I suspect she will in the next year because the baby bug has definitely bitten her.

If you're looking for more Rouens, I have two laying hens. The smaller one, Sue, is a voracious predator of the common fly and stalks them through the grass like a T-Rex hot on the tail of tasty quarry. It's hilarious. Neither has gone broody or shown any interest in motherhood.

For anyone looking to get into ducks or acquire more of the quackers, I have a laying (frequently broody so far) Swedish Black and her five half-Pekin progeny, plus six Rouen/Pekin crosses. Mommy duck is finally off the eggs as of this morning, so now I'm looking to fatten her up (poor thing's been broody about all year because various people/birds kept sticking more eggs under her) and find her a new home. So far the mixes all look like their moms, though the drakes of the Swedish/Pekin cross have more white on their chests and more yellow on their bills.

As much as I like duck eggs (and I do), I'm just overrun with them, and, unlike other kinds of fowl, the hens are the really noisy ones. A dozen of these girls laughing it up is sure to get the cops called on me at some point, so I'd rather work to finding them a more suitable home.
