INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

If I'm thinking of the right city, Hammond is a college town. Most likely its not a real dangerous town. I'd say the place is safe and too keep the meeting time during daylight hours to feel even safer.
This question is coming from the woman who lives in Chicago, lol, I know. Thanks Sally!

new places are always worth checking our or asking about. If you feel the need, maybe call the store and see what they think about allowing a craigslist sale to take place in their parking lot. Even if its not craigslist, most people understand that kind of a sale and the desire for a public place for the transaction to occur. No need to mention that its the sale of live poultry.

Hi Guys, I am meeting someone halfway to pick up some of my cockerels. I don't mean this in a rude way, I just want to be safe. I wanted to ask if anyone is familiar with the Cabela's store in Hammond. Is it a safe neighborhood if I head there by myself? I am so not familiar with the area, so just checking with some fellow chicken people.

I grew up about 20 minutes south of there. Its not bad during the day, but I have been away from there 16 years now lol. Stay away from Gary, unless the area has improved...

We found the crime to be bad in Hammond. Just be careful, maybe take a friend with you also.

Father in law has been moved to extended care, and is recovering well!

Have 3 trays left in the incubator and not setting anything else unless the turkeys start laying. Time to wind it down for the year. Last call for EEs, they are still laying well, and will only be setting eggs on request.
Had a very good year on muscovy hatches and 3 more broodies still on eggs. Most of whats in the incubator now are ducks! Anyone looking for muscovy I do expect a few more to hatch soon. PM if interested, most will be black, chocolates, barred or pied. lavenders are all spoken for and have a waiting list.
Mother goose and oldest muscovy ducklings are doing great, some are half her size already. (drakes)

Gary has NOT improved!!! We just moved from the area. My SO worked in east Gary (lake station) and drove an hour each direction so we could live somewhere safe. Hammond is fine during the DAY. Go to the shopping area and do NOT go anywhere else!!! Do everything you can not to get off on the wrong exit. Luckily the worst exits are easy to get back to the interstate. We took the grand tour but we were heavily armed. A friend of ours has worked for the Gary police for over 15 years. There are over 250,000 active warrants and only 75,000 residents. Hammond borders Gary on Gary's west side. Luckily the trouble stays for the most part, in Gary. Just make sure you don't end up there on accident. If you do, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a police officer to help you find your way out.

@racinchickins had some from a good breeder, nice large birds. He may be able to direct you to a good source for JGs.
Hows your search going for land, any leads?

I don't know if anyone has reported this or not, but the preliminary results on the H2N5 avian influenza vaccine are looking great, at least for chickens. Here's a link to a broadcast in Fort Wayne.

The vaccine is a little controversial. Some foreign countries won't buy our chicken(s) if we do this. I say screw that, what we lose in foreign exports we gain for ourselves, and not all countries will treat it the same. This year's avian flu outbreak was the single worst animal health problem in American history, and let's hope it stays that way. I take some comfort in knowing that a vaccine may be available for at use near "hot zones" like Iowa. Unlike big commercial hatcheries, most of us don't have the option to move our chickens to a safer place.

If we had an outbreak near me (in my county or adjacent), and I was offered the vaccine (and I do NOT know if they will offer it to BYC'ers), I will tell you I would take it in a red hot minute. Vaccines have probably done more to improve human and animal health than any other thing we have done in medicine, including all the drugs we have ever used. There is a country in Africa that has a cultural issue with vaccines (and distrust of the West), so it still has polio outbreaks. Small, but not zero. Well, somebody finally convinced them we weren't trying to sterilize their wives and daughters, and so far, that country has gone half a year with zero cases. This could be the first year ever of no polio on the entire African continent, which puts us one step closer to global elimination of this disease. If you are old enough (and a few of us are), you know how terrible polio was before the two vaccines we still use today were developed in the early 1960's.

Anyway, here's the link. http://wane.com/2015/07/23/usda-bird-flu-vaccine-works-on-chickens-testing-on-turkeys/
