INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I actually find it funny that y'all are scared as a person who grew up in a "ghetto"(really bad part of a big city) I know live in the country and I'm more scared now then I was then... Yes there are bad and dangerous people in the city where 1 in 10 carry a gun and 1 in 10 of those are criminals. I find 1 in 3 in the country carry firearms and 1 in 5 have some sort of record. Also it takes ambulances and other rescue groups 20-30 minutes if not more to respond... Assuming your not in the middle of no where or in the woods although it's seamingly more quite or "peacefull" in the country I think the trueth is all the trees muffle the screams and it's much more dangerous in the country this all doesn't include the animal attacks god forbid your vehicle breaks down good luck getting phone service and nearest gas station is 15 miles away lol best know somebody and never ever think about telling your neighbor to keep his trash or animals or whatever out of your yard or when you break down he will just drive by laughing (neighbors kids were kicking cats so we said something to him now they go out of their way to annoy us ugh) thankfully they don't kick the cats anymore
Kind of funny because the first time I was in a big city all by myself, I felt so out of place. I think its more about what one is used too, then they can better spot the dangers.

Supposidly the worst crime rate in America is actually in Alaska and there's few places more rural then that lol basically I was once told just don't go where you don't belong.. If your a tourist stay on the beaten path don't venture ECt ect

There was a guy on the bloomington craigslist today trying to sell 14 cornish x. I already have some but text the guy thinking a few more wouldnt hurt. He had put in the ad that he would make a deal for the whole flock and also said they were hens. Yet the pictures showed several males. So when I text him i pointed out that there were some males pictured where they part of what he was selling, and what kind of deal was he thinking for the whole lot. He text back immediately very rude and belligerant that they were "straight run hens", he wouldnt take a penny less than he had listed, he wasnt giving the d@*& things away, his " ol lady" was blind and created the ad, etc. etc. I quit answering after the first text but he continued several times, each message as rude or offensive as the last. As a woman myself, there is no way in Hades I would ever agree to meet a person that came across like that I dont care if he had chickens that laid golden eggs.

Now I said all that just to say it doesnt matter if its city or country, if you buy anything off craigslist you have no idea who the seller is until you get there. Bad people can live anywhere. Please worry about your safety first. If anything seems off, dont do it. You'll always get another chance at what your looking for, but you only have one life.

And if the person who posted those cornish x happens to be reading this, you really should apologize to your wife/girlfriend and talk about her with a little more respect from now on. When trying to conduct business, a more pleasant attitude will get you farther :).

I'm looking for some info on 4H. I'm trying to do a little research now in hopes the AI threat will be past by next summer and 4h poultry shows will be back to normal. I have a couple family members and friends with kids that might be interested in showing some birds. I always go look at the birds and rabbits etc at the fairs, but dont know the first thing about how it all works. Is there a website that gives more information about the whole process?

One of my main questions is about breeds and colors that are "accepted" or showable. I was going to try and help the kids gets some chicks/eggs/birds to begin raising for next year but I want to make sure they start with breeds and colors that are showable.

Thanks for any help

Contact your county extension office and ask for the 4-H educator; he or she can give you much information. Many 4-Hers show hatchery birds at the fairs, but if you're into showing, a bird from a reputable breeder doesn't cost any more to feed than the hatchery chick.

The SOP is pretty expensive for someone just researching breeds. If you go to feathersite.com, you can find pictures and info about different breeds with addresses for their breed clubs, which usually have the standard for that breed on their website or Facebook page.

You can also go to poultryshowcentral.com and check out their information on showing.

If you know in general what type of chickens you might be interested in--egg, meat, dual purpose, crested, fancy, etc.-- and post on here, their are BYCers who can give you information.

i dont know what it is, but it looks kewl . . . . .

I'd start by calling your local county office and asking for the name of the 4-H group in your county that shows the chickens. Then attend a meeting before the summer is over. They will know which birds can be shown and which birds are overshown compared to the more rare for your county breeds. your child is more likely to get an award if you can get your hands on a good stock of chicks in a breed that has little competition. Then see how competitive the state show is.
