Happy Friday everyone!! To insulate or not to insulate the coop? I have received lots of free 3/4" foam board insulation that will be in between finished plywood so it would not be exposed. I have tons of windows to put in the coop so there will be plenty of ventation so it would not be too hot in the summer. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I sure would. We have 1/2" on our coop.

Hello everyone! I have been dealing with family illness and a family member's surgery, but everyone is fine now! I resisted looking at our thread while I caught up on my work. I was so behind with my graphic design work, and I knew better than to even take a peek at what's been going on with our thread. I've hated missing out, though!

Hope everyone and their chickens/animals have been doing well! My nine hens have had a good summer despite some intensely hot and humid days. Bonbon and her "baby" Screech (who is almost a year old and who originated from one of @ellymayRans 's magic hatching eggs) are still sleeping in their own little coop. Last week, I was surprised to see them sleeping in a nesting box in the big coop. They spent one other night before deciding that they preferred the peace and quiet of their little coop. Much less drama!

I have decided to start setting eggs for fall chicks, so that I will have started pullets in the spring. Does anyone else do this. I read a really good article about it in Chickens magazine and it sounds like a great idea.

i have a batch in the incubator now due to hatch next week and 1 broody due to hatch next week and 1 broody with 3 chicks and I was able to get the 3 mth broody to claim 1 out or 4 chicks that I had to get from RK for her. don't know y she only took the 1??? oh well she is finally off the nest and happy, that's all that counts. I normally get chicks in the fall, well about now, close to fall, and I have not had a problem, but 1 time, that was that real bad winter 2 yrs ago I think it was. Ended up with chicks actually growing up in the house ... not fun but we got it done.

Just got home & happy to see my flock! Our pet sitters did well. We even found a surprise breakfast for us in our refrigerator. Did I mention we have great neighbors? & !

Anyway, to follow up on the long monarch explanation, the eggs look like this:

Above pic was taken through a microscope. You can see how the white dot has more of an oval shape.
Below are pics from my daughter's project. She took the pics to show how we raise monarchs.
Usually we get our 1st eggs around Memorial Day. When the weather warms & the milkweed pops up, the 1st eggs arrive. Some years we only get a few waves of eggs. (Maybe 10-20 eggs, then none for 3-4 weeks.) This year, we've been getting many eggs! Sometimes 40 at a time & then more the following week. Mid-late August is when the last eggs are found. These last eggs usually form the migratory monarchs.








Female(top) Male (bottom pic) - look for the 2 spots on the lower wings.


It's a lot of fun & free. If the kids get bored feeding them, you can always release on a milkweed plant. Great thrill to watch the butterflies hatch & later soar into the sky.

The more you release, the more eggs you'll get!
We can't walk into the backyard without monarchs circling our heads & sometimes landing on us.


Several years ago, DD liked to pose with as many butterflies as possible. Our record was 13.

We are building a winter house for Waddles ( Chubs was killed by a weasel 2 days ago. Waddles misses her )
anyway the house will be 4' x 3'5" and 4' tall and will be 4" off the ground. We are getting him 2 hen off a friend so he wont be alone so that makes 3 they already have a covered run that I can easily block off in bad weather so they wont have to live in the house on days that are bad.
Q. 1 = would that be big enough for them to just sleep in?
Q. 2 = would you put in a perch? If so how high off the floor?
They are very clumsy and I personally think they would be better off without a perch but I have never raised these birds before and I want them to be HAPPY!!!! but safe at the same time of course.

@jchny2000 I want to get into the LO's but I would want to wait till I can get 2 or 3 at the same time, or hatching eggs. I have too many Roo's as is with no hens for them.

Speaking of which I have a Silkie roo for sale if anyone is interested pm me for details.


he is missing some of his hairy head feathers right now because he got into a fight with my Romeo. Trust me Romeo got the worst end of it, he is totally bald!! poor boy.

Are you responding to me?

I cant see 3 of these x large chickens fitting in a tote. Don't know if they make a tote that big. And I don't think it would work out for me in the winter. And how are you keeping predators out? Maybe if I seen a pic I would understand how you are doing it.
