INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well first predator loss for awhile! My trio of EE's just wouldn't roost at night in any of the coops. They've always slept outside, usually perched on a chair at the walkout basement door. Well I found the rooster decapitated this morning with half it's breast eaten on. DH said our dog was outside last night going nuts and came in all out of breath. The 2 hens were roosted in a tree just near the body. No blood and it was cold so I'm just not sure when it happened but it seemed to have been interrupted so thinking it was due to our dog. I have manually put them in the coops and in the pens, guess I need to start again and maybe now that the girls have seen horror they will appreciate it more!!

I hate taking pics with a heat lamp but they were just too cute to not!
Latest broody fiasco eggs that I set have began hatching. Out of 19, 12 have hatched and the 2 silkies I set on purpose!

I haven't used them in the winter yet. However welded wire seems very strong. I just used the natural bend in them for the hoop since it's in a big roll and bent a foot of skirting around the bottom. Then cut 2 ends square to cover. Also with skirting bottoms. I only use them as temporary pens so there's just a top hatch but I keep it tied and rarely use. I would like to build a better framed trap door type for them but haven't. They are only built to hold a few birds. I did put 2 together for the Turkeys though and it works great. I just drag them around to allow for fresh grass. The individual pens are approximately 6' long, 3' tall by 4' wide. I've used for breeding pens, grow out pens and like with the new ducks to familiarize them/quarantine.

I saw the Martinsville Rural King has a new feed and think it was Organic but didn't pay much attention. The Organic feed I was talking of in my earlier posts were at a feed store on the Southside of Indy, just south of Southport road on Bluff. Glenns Valley feed and Seed. They carry flowers, vegetable plants, trees, feed and Seed (grass seed, etc.)

The organic feed I purchased at Martinsville Rural King is "Organic Life" brand. 16% layer pellets are $34.99 for 50#. The Organic Life Starter Crumble is $37.99 for 50#. They have another brand as well that was a little less expensive but they did not have pellets only layer crumble.

I greatly appreciate the lead on Glens Valley Feed, while I don't mind spending $ feeding the chickens the way I choose to eat for myself I don't pass up the opportunity to save some money either. The price difference is pretty substantial, thank you!

NP.. If you do make the trip you will find the quality of their feed is much better too.

Shooting at your pens?? WHAT? I'd be shooting their dog the next time it came into my yard! Do you have a camera that you can set up? The cops would have to do something about the kid. I'm livid for you. I'll never have neighbors again. We're on 5 acres, so I know if something gets to my flocks, it's a Fox, Raccoon, Coyote or Mink. We usually live trap and relocate 4-5 miles away. How big is the neighbors dog?

Cheers to moving soon!
e have A trail cam but we have tried to put it up and no place we put it would it not be seen, if it wouldn't be seen then we wouldn't see anything, make sense?
They have a Rottweiler mix, so not real big but not small either. We have GP's ( 2 ) but we cant leave them out at night b/c they like to run the hood so to speck. and we have yet to find a fence that will keep them in. Apparently it wont keep other dogs out either.
We live trap the coons ect.. still trying to get this dang weasel that has been terrorizing my hens for 2 years, anyone have any ideals on that would love to hear it, but we would need a coyote trap to catch the dog and have you seen the prices of those? Not in our budget.
I don't kill anything.... unless I have to

Wow excuse the topic change but the AC finely showed up and is now on his way to " have a chat " with the dog owner.
Not that it will do any good but its on record.

thanks for the info, going to talk to DH and see what he thinks of building one, I think it would be easy to have snow free zones with that type, Just add another tarp....
